I stared going in the early 90s too, Faddy provided excitment but I’m not sure I’d class him as the best I’ve seen. This might be controversial but in terms of talent I think Barry Ferguson is up their. Excellent player on his day.

    john Collins is another one.

I don't think there is too much between Ferguson, Collins, Lambert and Fletcher.

Would agree with most of these 2 posts with the exception of Fletcher. Unbelievably overrated in a Scotland shirt imo.

If England want him then that’s it. If they don’t then we get the scraps. England will have the say.

I think you'll find Scott McTominay will have the say. There's nothing Gareth Southgate could say to him that he would be aware of already.

Good luck to McTominay, whatever he decides. Obviously the potential for us to have a player who is a regular starter at Man Utd is appealing, but if the lad decides to throw in his lot with England then fair enough.

Totally agree, although once he's made his bed he better lie in it if things go tits up with England.

Just reading that McTominay is to meet Southgate today. That should put an end to the embarrassment of watching guys on here happy to feed off of England’s scraps.

How is he England's scraps? He's never represented England at any level and if anything I'm sure I read he'd previously joined up at a Scottish youth squad.

    No Islam Feruz then?

The perfect example of why it's pointless looking at potential future stars (not a dig at op). We are great at 16/17 yr old, then a large chunk of these players start to think they've made it and discover booze and birds and are has been by 21. There was a lot of excitement the other week when one of the youth sides beat Spain, but I'd bet that that same fixtures five years down the line would  finish in a very different outcome.

If the boy McTominay  say's no to Scotland waits a year or two hoping for an England call up which doesn't happen then decides on Scotland what sort of reception will he get?

    The one he'd deserve.

I think the SFA buying Hampden could be good for us in the long term, as it would the enable redevelopment of Hampden should funds become available to do so.

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but Stuttgart converted their stadium from having an athletics track around it to being purely for football recently and the difference is huge:

It would be great if something like this was possible at Hampden.

Werder Bremen did it too. Would love to see this done at Hampden.

Not boycotting isn’t the same as being a happy clapper.

I have no interest in boycotting Scotland games but I’m certainly not a happy clapper.

All I'm saying is, for the people who want serious change, they would have to make a stand. All this "I hate the SFA, but I'm still going to matches" is what keeps the blazers in position. Don't moan about them, then continue to fund them.

Coventry City. The supporters there have been wanting the incompetent ownsers SISU to sell up for a good number of years now. They say NOPM (Not One Penny More) and refuse to feed SISU cash by boycotting all home games at The Ricoh and not renewing season tickets. That has been going on for around FIVE years now to no effect - SISU are still there and turning down potential bidders for the club.

Cheers for that. Giving it a quick look it seems that they still average around 7-8k for each home match, which for the club is poor, but fairly decent by the league standard, which to me confirms what some on here say about happy clappers. If your going to boycott, you do it properly eg hardly anyone going to games, very few people renewing SSC, but fortunately/unfortunately (depending on your view) there will always be people who show up.

There appears to be two distinct camps posting to this thread:-

True Scotland Team Supporters. The relentless loyal tribe that make us proud of who we are the world over.

    And

Those that are obviously on here by mistake. The clue is in the title lads - "The Tartan Army" if yer no behind the team yer in the wrong place.

One or two posts have actually said they cant wait until Eck fails so they can laugh. Whit !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The SFA just love people like you 👍

And he also played a whole string of duds. Trial and error I know. However, it must be remembered that Vogts had no choice as there were a number of the squad he inherited who either retired or were on the brink of it.

A lot of people forget this. Vogts literally had to build a squad pretty much from scratch due to Brown's reluctance to introduce younger players. Yes he probably had an easier group than the likes of Levein, Smith and Strachan had, but they at least has a reasonably settled squad most of the time.

Doesn’t sound like many foreigners are being considered but it’s hard to tell. Especially since we don’t have a chief executive at the moment.

I don’t think anyone with real standing in the game could have applied or they would probably be in position by now. Unless the SFA were so blinkered by Michael O’Neill that they have made an arse of themselves by rejecting someone good.

    Who knows?

Apparently Felix Magath had thrown his hat in the ring. He would have to be seriously considered if true.

Going by your thought processes then Roxburgh and Brown would never have got the job. And look how they did in the job compared to others. Very well thanks.

Yeah, cause my current thought process is relevant to the game 25-30 yrs ago eh.

It is a regular occurence you know that clubs go back down after one season. And lets remember he had got them there plus don't overlook the fact that Norwich were well-positioned in 7th in the league the following season when he was sacked. I think it is very fair to say if you were to ask the fans of every club he has managed the fans would speak favourably of him.

I'm sure fans of his previous club's would speak favourably of him and I'm sure he is a good manager at that level, but the bottom line is that in his one and only crack at the top level he failed. And, yes lots of clubs do go straight back down after promotion, but some dont, Eddie Howe's Bournemouth being an example and at very least that's the level we need our next manager to be. But as you said, Neill is still young so he has plenty of time to improve.

  15. 3 hours ago, Caledonian Craig said:

Close to winning half his games in charge at unfashionable clubs. Gaining promotion at Hamilton and Norwich all before he hit his mid 30s is how I define solid.

Cool. We'll just ignore the 1 season in the EPL where he finished 2nd bottom then and focus on the lower league stuff 👍

Alex Neil is an interesting one. Solid managerial record but he is yet to manage a real big club. Maybe too soon for him.

Define "solid managerial record". I see a guy who done well at a lower level then failed in the top tier, which is where International football is.

According to which paper you read, Jackie Mac is a candidate to replace Regan!!

TBH I was completely unaware that he was Chief Exec at York City...

TBF, they could replace Regan with a cardboard cut out of Steve Jobs and it would still do a better job.

Well I watched those games as a kid and them seemed to play well especially towards ends of games (superior fitness?) but time may have rosetinted my view in the fact no Scottish team including the national team has got anywhere near as close to such a level again.

However, this was the pinnacle of the European game and even if they were awful (not sure as strong as that) it was a remarkable achievement.

Still feel out of all the candidates mentioned, Walter Smith is by far the best manager.  All the others seem to be either very inexperienced or very average club managers.

Remind me again how well he did at Everton when he couldn't buy the league.

  19. 2 hours ago, Caledonian Craig said:

His managerial career doesn't rip up any trees for me. I know people here  disagree but there you go.

Unfortunately we're very unlikely to have any candidates who have a career that "rips up trees". Although, in saying in that, I'd be surprised if John Hughes, Malky MacKay, Scot Gemmill and Walter Smith were the best we could attract.
