The greater population = the greater at football myth has been debunked years ago.

Uruguay are half our size and yet they produce top players. No one can cite them having better weather as being the catalyst. We should have dozens of indoor facilities dotted around the country in order to combat the snow and ice. We don't.

Plus our basic football attitude is atrocious, it's along the lines of "Punt the ball as far up the park as you can, because the more you knock the ball aimlessly into the box, the more chances of scoring a goal". If we were the size of Brazil we'd still be abysmal.

Totally agree, this population thing is nonsense. You only need to find around 30 or so players to form a squad, so whether you have 2 million or 200 million, it shouldn't be difficult, as proven by the likes of Denmark and Croatia who have a similar population to us and, without checking, seem to reach more finals than not.

And someone gets it! Thank you!

Our defenders aren't intelligent, so playing with a three would literally just give us an extra body back there to be in the way.

But that "extra body back there" leaves us light in midfield because let's be honest we play a 5-3-2 not 3-5-2. Plus as someone said we don't really have anyone who plays wing back apart from possibly Ryan Fraser. Right now, in my humble opinion, we need to play some variation of a 4-5-1, and building the midfield around McGinn, Armstrong, McGregor and possibly Cairney and Fraser.

Maybe the fact that they play it every week, maybe that’s too logical.

Yeah, but apart from that lol. 3 at the back is crazy. We've barely enough decent cbs for 2 positions let alone 3.

McGinn is going to be our main man in midfield.

He'll be really good once he realizes he can use his right foot too. He's almost literally getting himself in knots trying to keep the ball on his left foot.

    The reasons are many:

The SPFL and the SFA aren't united, neither of them care one bit about infrastructure and facilities and youth development, which means that the amount of indoor facilities, etc, are at a shameful rate. All of the Scottish domestic clubs are self-serving and looking out for their best interest, with no hint of interest of unity and trying to make Scottish football strong.

For some weird reason we have 4 leagues and 42 clubs, which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. In the Premiership one or two bad results and you're looking at the relegation area, which will ultimate force manager's hands into playing tried and tested players over youngsters. We should have 2 leagues; 1 of them with 18 and one with 12. And either amalgamate 12 clubs or relegate them into the amateur ranks.

And this is the tip of the iceberg.

You won't last long here, too much sense in one post. Been saying similar for years, Scottish football is piss poor and a shambles from top to bottom, we need to rip it up and start again.

To me such a move smacked of Mourinho desperation. He is fast running out of ideas, inspiration, motivation and control at United. I am not sure how McTominay did in the role but I would not be too quick to judge him.

I think Mourinho is doing what he likes and is hoping to be sacked. IMO he's decided he wants out but won't resign. Incidentally he seems to hold McTominay in high regard and spoke highly of him after the game.

He is still only 23, so if he can iron out the errors he will be a top midfielder for us.

Please don't take this as a personal dig mate, but as a nation we need to cut this "he's still only X" out. Many, many players from various countries perform at the highest level at way younger ages than 23, but here your still classed as a kid till your about 25. Yes, McGinn is 23 or whatever but he's been a pro long enough to know what's what. The other side of that coin however is that he's still inexperienced at international level, but that's nothing to do with age.

Have you ever been to Murrayfield for a football game? i have and sat behind goals.  It's pish.

As for half truths. You've just said Belgium are the best team in the world?! You do know there's a competition we've just had called the world cup and they came 3rd?

Friday was a friendly  Was £25-35 a ticket. I'm surprised as many went.

Last friendly in East Coast got less tban 15k if i remember correctly.

How can we sell hampden btw when we don't own jt? As for access....having been to various gigs at Murrayfield with 67k there it's certainly no better than Hampden. Can only imagine how it would be for a football game at capacity.

I could understand if it was a massive upgrade on hampden but it's not. Massive gaps between stands on pitch on 3 sides too which makes sight befind goals in lower tiers just ad bad as hampden.

Nail on head there mate. Couldn't agree more.

Partly down to personnel, it helps with a Lambert in the team. I’d go with Tierney as DM with 4 at the back. Horrible watching him at centre half.

I'd rather have Tierney at CB than Mulgrew.

Not ecstatic about paying £25 for the Albania game, but I’ll still go. Few mates not bothering, mainly due to the Monday night.

    Can’t see anymore than 25k

Isn't £25 on average what you'd pay to watch an SPL match?

  11.  Not what I'd pick, but something like what I'd expect

                           Archer

    Paterson  Hendry.  Mulgrew.   Robertson

    Fraser    McGinn.   McTominay.   Douglas

                          Armstrong.

                          Cummings

And when these attributes are not in huge abundance you need to look at other ways to bring success .,

I dont think players singing the national anthem with gusto is going to win us games. But i do think you get a good insight into confidence by looking at the body language during it and for me the players last night looked lacking in confidence and/or disinterested in the game. I think it is naive to underestimate what passion and pride can achieve.

IMO McLeish needs to work on the  confidence. Amongst other things.

Confidence comes with experience. Half a dozen of the starting line up had 5 or less caps, it's understandable that they're not overly confident or nervous.

It’s the manner in which we lost. 5 players uncapped started tonight and each and everyone of them was well below what is expected at international level

I agree we should be using friendlies for trying new things out. We learnt a lot about these youngsters breaking through tonight, but not in a positive way

I see what you're saying, but these guys coming in aren't international level, at least yet, maybe never. They're never going to be in their 1st cap, but if bleeding them in pointless friendlies gets them to that level then I'll take it. As I said though I don't think it helped having so many new players in at once, especially in midfield. I think people forget the gulf in class going from playing for Aberdeen or Fulham or Cardiff to international level, even against your Costa Rica's.

  14. Amazed by the negativity on this thread. One poor performance with a team full of uncapped players and almost everyone is whinging. People on here have constantly moaned about bringing in new players, then we bring in new players and guess what, they fucking still moan. It's a process, you can't just chuck in 6 new players and expect to look like world beaters. This is the whole point in friendlies. Tonight, we lacked experience at international level, too many new faces in the starting 11 and that was McLeish's biggest mistake tonight, especially in midfield. That and playing Ritchie.

Only the deafening silence from the player involved. Not once have we heard the player tout himself for selection or moan about being forgotten. Feel free to search around in the press or on the vastness of the internet and you will find nothing. That is odd in itself. All of that is not made up. It is my opinion that he has quit international football. I am not saying it is fact just my opinion. If he were to be vocal and state anger at being forgotten or pleading for selection it would prove that I am wrong but to date he hasn't so my theory remains a possibility.

He hasn't retired, although seems to not be overly fussed about being picked though.
