To sum it up , some Scotland fans disgraced themselves. Those who are trying to justify it can get to fuck!

    Them: "You f*ckin' fenian!!"

Me: "Barely know what that is..."

    Them: "Er, same."

Them: "Well.... You fuckin' tattie muncher!!"

Me: "Who doesn't like spuds, though? You can do so much with them. Fry them, boil them, roast them. They go with everything."

    Them: "....true..."

Them: "*sigh*.... Well, we're still gonna f*ckin' beat ya up!!"

Me: "OK, but at this point your hatred is completely arbitrary. Also, taxi please..."

Shows you how bad things are in the Irish setup, generally, at the minute. The previous director of the FAI (John Delaney) was sucking funds out of the organisation for years, which didn't help matters at all, plus jobs for the boys and presents for his bits on the side. The book 'Champagne Football', regarding Delaney's reign, is an absolutely outrageous cautionary tale.

Although I would be a fan of the Irish team and was pleased they won, I didn't see the match as indicative of overall form. Scotland were probably feeling a bit under-motivated coming off a WC playoff into an NL game, and Ireland was likely feeling the pressure to try and really perform after two lacklustre results. Ireland's chances well taken, whereas Scotland had a couple of gifts that they just couldn't capitalise upon. I expect a more even game in the return at Hampden.

Anyway, the NL is a glorified series of friendlies and neither team is going to the WC, so f*** it. Let's just get back to one thing we can agree on. Hoping England lose. 🍺🍺🍺

  3. Don't fret too much just yet. If there's one team who can mess up a healthy 2-0 lead, it's Ireland. There'd nearly be as many Irish fans annoyed by an Ireland win as ones who are pleased since there's a large amount who want manager Stephen Kenny gone forthwith. They're not in the stadium, though, obviously...

Fair play to Martin O'Neill and his team.  Like Scotland yesterday, they had to go and beat a team with an enviable home record.  Unlike Scotland yesterday, though, they got the job done.  O'Neill got his tactics spot-on.

They are one dirty, dirty team though!

To be fair, any team out of NI, ROI and Scotland could be just as rash in the same circumstances. In the British style of game, the emphasis on physicality runs deep. You combine that with a high stakes situation and a few saucy yellows seem pretty much nailed on.

Lot of time-wasting from Ireland last night, I thought. That was more surprising, to me, than the challenges. But then again, it's just one of those parts of the modern game, and it's unfortunately of no comfort to be the team who didn't time-waste, and lose, vs. being the one who did time-waste and win.

  5. One of the worst games of the tournament alright, but NI really did not deserve to go out like that. Like, it's a relief, I'll admit, that NI are going home before/at the same stage as RoI, so there won't be too many 'bragging rights' there, but to go out on an OG must be absolutely sickening, even though there was not much he could have done in the moment.

  6. Lot of people saying that Irish fans have 'jumped the shark', that this is fun and good spirits driven from a need to be liked or live up to a reputation. Well, I can certainly see the point but, no matter what we it's fueled, be it from genuine fun-loving or just a self-conscious affectation of being fun-loving, if it contributes to a good feeling in the place they're in, then is it not good anyway?

I would hope that when the Scottish and the Irish get to WC 2018, there can be a mighty street party in Moscow between the two filled with good spirits, whether it be a try-hard thing or not.

He's been succesful, there's no denying that. But when it comes to anything more than one-dimensional hoofball, Ireland are indeed 'pish'.

Sorry, but the two goals that Ireland have scored so far at the Euros were anything but hit and hope long balls or one-dimensional football. The goal last night in particular was as sweet an attacking move as you'll see.

Ireland tonight reminded me of the Scotland team that played Sweden in the 1990 World Cup. That team came on the pitch against a highly-rated Sweden team (four years later they were World Cup semi-finalists) and within two minutes I knew we wouldn't lose. I could count on one hand how many times I've seen that level of passion from Scotland teams. Ireland show it regularly. Depressing.

Similar to how a Scotland fan could, I can recount many times where Ireland either choked on a lead or put in an underwhelming performance. In fact, I can point to Ireland's two group games preceding Italy as examples! Those passionate displays that carry our teams beyond opposition who look to be better on paper are fairly rare and it's probably why we tend to appreciate them all the more.

  9. Ireland won't be getting past France. In no way do I expect this, but, as an Irish fan, I can never discard the hope. However, I'm more than happy with the display the team has put on so far in the tournament. Belgium was very disappointing and knocked the wind out quite a bit, but to watch the team come back the way they did against Italy? Gets me right here. That's all I can really ask for with Ireland in big tournaments on the rare occasion of Ireland's involvement - one great moment.

Paris 2009 will a ghost that looms over the game to come, at least in the minds of the Irish. Perhaps the French have forgotten, I don't know. But for Ireland it will be a game of symbolic importance and perhaps that will drive them to at least not lose too badly. This is, after all, a strong French side playing to its home fans while the country hosts the tournament. No doubts that they will be motivated to try and win convincingly.

So, come what may, we in Ireland, hopefully, will still be singing, "Olé, olé, olé."......

  10. I've been reading Scottish chatter over the last while, and it's been sad, and I suppose interesting as well, to see the sentiments change since September. At the beginning of September, Scotland looked nailed on for AT LEAST 3rd place, and then the result that no-one expected against Georgia happened. By the middle of October, I saw people opining that Ireland play to their strengths while Scotland are ultimately fooling themselves by playing a passing game and trying to progress and should aim to be more like Ireland. Now, I'm not saying everyone said this, but I think had anyone said it around the Summer, they'd have been told to f*ck off. It would have been laughable. And on the Irish side, fans were pointing to Scotland as a 'limited' team who were attempting to bring their game on, and Ireland should try to be more like Scotland. I suppose it reminds us that the result is ultimately king and always will be. What happened in the game before last barely seems to matter. Are Scottish fans happy to play the long game and watch their team attempt to bring its game on, even if it leads to more heartbreak than glory in the short-term? Are Irish fans happy to watch their team concede possession now that its led the team to the Euros?

  11. I think Scotland probably would have done well in a tie like this, because throughout the campaign they were set up to attack, and this bears out in the goals scored - 3 more than Ireland. But, also, they were more defensively naive, with 5 more conceded. So, I think Scotland could have gone out there to take a scoring draw back to Hampden, perhaps 2-2, or 3-3. Ireland will undoubtedly be playing a more cagey game and keep it tight on the defensive end. That said, you need to be taking at least one away goal to the second leg, as it makes things much less nervy. 0-0 going to Dublin would mean the Bosnians only need a scoring draw.

  12. I'm not discrediting that. Your victory over Germany deserves congratulating. But when we lost to Georgia we took ourselves out of the driving seat and took our fate out of our owns hands and handed it to the Irish who deservedly took it. Well done! But had we not slipped up to Georgia you wouldn't have had that opportunity.

Well, if Scotland had beaten Georgia, that would leave the team on 15, three behind Ireland and with a better head-to-head. Assuming Ireland's other results stayed the same, Ireland would still have it in their own hands to do the business tonight. It would be a tougher ask without the safety net of the playoff, but still.

  13. This thread is not doing a lot for relations between the two sets of fans....

If there are fans having a dig, I guess that comes with the situation that's in it. If the situation were reversed between Ireland and Scotland, you'd have a few Scots doing the same thing on YBIG. At best now, they'll only get to commiserate if Ireland fails to qualify as well. I can see why a lot of Scottish fans would not be enthused about Ireland qualifying, as it would mean they'd be the only ones from 'these islands' not to qualify. Misery wants company for Summer 2016.

  14. where are the posters that said Brown was better than McCarthy?

Absolutely outstanding last night against the world champions.

McCarthy finally came good last night and delivered the kind of performance expected of him. Hopefully now he can blossom into a proper midfield force.

Would ye stop acting like sore losers. We're not at fault here its yourselves that messed up against Georgia and if the shoe was on the other foot i'd still support ye to get there at least.

I'd like to think this is true, from my end at least. I congratulated the Scots on this board after their win in Glasgow. On that night, they were the better team. Over the campaign as a whole, though, they fell short, and they've really only themselves to blame for that. It's hyperbole for bitter Scottish fans to call Ireland one of the worst international sides around. But if Ireland are that, then what the hell does that make Scotland?

  16. Spot on. They are shite and we flattered them in Dublin.

    Mon the Poles

Ireland have matched the Poles on points so far and have conceded the least goals of anyone in the group. Tonight, they have beaten the world champions, and beaten the top seed in their group for the first time in many, many years. For tonight, at least, all of this makes Ireland pretty good.

  17. Irish here, but sorry the Scottish couldn't hold on to the win, mainly for reasons related to Ireland's chances, but it wouldn't have hurt to have had the chance for both sets of fans in France.
