  1. I see Barrie McKay has been called up.

I like the boy, and posted recently praising him for his performances in previous Scotland youth games I'd been to. (at U17 or U19 level, I think). There is potential there.

However, he's a First Division - sorry Championship - player. And as someone who watches Championship football every week, it annoys the hell out of me that McKay gets in, while Craig Sibbald is continually ignored. Sibbs is one of the most skilful players I've seen in the flesh during 35 years of watching football. What does he have to do to get recognised?

  2. we are that good we are writing players off if they have not made it by the time they are 24?

i remember another time my team signed an uncapped 26 year old from falkirk and he went on to win 69 caps

Aye, but most of those caps were gained when he was playing at a higher level than your team could offer him. Or mine, as I'm a Falkirk fan and IMO he was good enough to play at international level when he was with us.

I can't see O Halloran being considered for a call up as long as he's at St Johnstone. That's not a criticism of his ability, it's the just the way things are under Strachan.

  3. I saw Barrie McKay multiple times for Scotland youths a few years back and thought he was excellent. I then saw him a few times against us (Falkirk) when he played with Raith and thought he'd regressed. The pace was still there, but the intelligence, skill and game awareness that I saw before seemed to have deserted him.

I'm sure I read posts on P&B from Raith fans giving him stick. I'd be interested to hear their opinion of him on this thread.

  4. Anyone know much about Botti Biabi?

"Because of parentage and birthplace, Biabi had a three-way choice to make between Ivory Coast, England and Scotland but elected to represent Scotland, the country of his upbringing"

Saw him play maybe 50-70 times, most of which were for Falkirk U20s. Medium height, stockily-built lad who had a bit of pace and a bit of skill. He scored frequently, though that's not hard to do at U20 level.

He played around 20 games for us at first team level, mostly coming on as a sub. In the majority of those he struggled to make any sort of impact on the game, though he played a blinder when he came on at East End Park. At least until he lost the heid and got sent off for retaliation following an off-the-ball stamp from some dirty Fifer. You kind of expect that sort of behaviour from Dunfermline folk.

Sorry, I'm letting my club allegiances get in the way here. :D

Botti also had a great game when he came on as a sub in the Cup Final against Inverness. He won the freekick that set up our equaliser. Swansea bought him a few months later for a rumoured 150K.

The general consensus amongst Falkirk fans was that he had the potential to become a decent footballer but getting that sort of money for him was a steal. At the time of his departure he wasn't good enough to be a regular in our first team squad, so he's a long, long long way from ever getting anywhere near a full Scotland squad. I think he was called up once or twice for the U19s / U21s but didn't get a game.

Jay Fulton and Steven Kingsley - who we also sold to Swansea - are better prospects IMO. As is Connor McGrandles at Norwich.

  5. I see Adida have as new template with a tartan design woven through it. Countries like Ukraine and Bosnia (away) will be wearing this during some diddy tournament next summer.

  6. The Proxima buses that were put on seemed to work quite well.

I went there by train and didn't emerge from the stadium until about an hour after the full time whistle. I found the bus queue no bother, thanks to a mate who was waiting for me, and within ten mins a bus pulled up and we were on our way back to Faro. Free travel, given that there was no chance for the driver to sell - never mind check - tickets.

I'd budgeted for having to get a taxi (16 euros each way according to the hotel) but it all it cost was a single train fare (standard price 1.40 euros).

  7. England playing two friendlies next month, so are some other teams.

England have known for a while that they wouldn't be in a playoff though.

Having said that, wasn't the Norway friendly arranged at short notice? It certainly felt like it judging on what I paid for fights. ?

  8. It's amazing the way tickets always suddenly become available the day after the SFA send them out, and folk know they haven't been selected for pick up.

I wonder if the SFA record which seat number is allocated to each member?

If so, they could kill this trade stone dead with very little effort. All they have to do is publicise that their undercover squad will randomly buy tickets advertised for sale in the Scotland end. Once these are traced back, the original purchaser will be given a lifetime ban from the SSC.

  9. I actually found one top was sufficient.

The place was so roasting that I was wringing with sweat after every walk so I just stepped into the shower, fully clothed, and kept the clothes on after I came out.

Half an hour later I was as dry as a bone and smelling of roses.

  10. My flight from Amsterdam to Kiev on Wednesday was overbooked and I was initially told there might not be a seat for me.

When I explained to the lassie that I had a connection in Kiev she managed to get me a seat. Being a few hours early might have helped.

Saw a few TA standing at the security gate when we were boarding so I guess they were on the reserve list. No idea if they got on or not but the flight was stowed.

Does checking in online help you avoid this sort of crap?

I didn't, but will in future.

  11. It's actually pretty easy to get on the points ladder as long as you pick the right game to start with.

I went to Serbia, which was my first away game in modern times and the first time I ever saw Scotland outwith the British Isles.

Pish weather, pish result and pish host city (I stayed in Novi Sad). I still loved it though and I've been to every away game since. Tblisi will be my eleventh consecutive one.

What happened to my invitation to join the Elite?

  12. Get a Halifax Clarity card (assuming they still exist, and if they don't there has to be something else similar).

I got one years ago specifically for travelling abroad. No foreign transaction fees and no cash withdrawal fees. All you pay is interest on any money you withdraw.

I clear the balance as soon as the transaction appears in my online banking account - which is normally with two or three days - so it literally costs me pennies to spend money abroad.

  13. Just starting researching the place today, Cable car, funicular, old town and old fortress,

Looks an interesting place to visit. Getting excited now.

There's a good free guide available if you google "in your pocket".

  14. If Jamie MacDonald keeps up his early season form he'll be knocking at the door, but I agree Bain looks a sensational prospect :ok:

I saw MacDonald maybe 40 times last season for Falkirk. He's an excellent shot-stopper who doesn't like coming off his line and therefore doesn't command his box. His decision-making can be suspect at times too and he cost us a number of goals because of it. He is not an international keeper.

Agree with the comments about Bain. Every time I saw him for Alloa he was fantastic.

  15. Is anyone on here a registered user which means even though you arent an ssc member occasionally you get emails from the ssc offering you tickets for games.

I'm not in the SSC but I get these emails regularly from the SFA. I've never quite worked out where they got my details from.

  16. FIFA have confirmed the draw will start at 4pm Scottish time so it will probably be close to 6 by the time they get round to UEFA.

Further details are available here - http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=2015/m=6/news=saint-petersburg-gears-up-for-the-2018-fifa-world-cuptm-preliminary-dr-2653028.html?intcmp=fifacom_hp_module_news

Buggers. It's a lot more exciting when you can watch a draw live, look at how the groups shape up and decide when you want our name to come out.

Unfortunately at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon I'll be at a game.

  17. Ironic that everyone was worrying about this being played behind closed doors because "happy" fans ran on the pitch.

And yet last night we had two pitch invasions. One of which was so badly dealt with that the naked streaker had time to stop in the centre circle, have a nip from a miniature, and then stroll slowly up to a bemused Qatari player and shake his hand.

Meanwhile all the security guards were standing at the side of the pitch looking at one another as if to say

    • YOU go and get him.
    • Naw YOU dae it.
    • It's no mah joab.
    • Well it's no f'kin mine either.

I imagine a certain security firm might be getting their arses kicked this morning. Wonder what punishment UEFA will impose on us?
