Brilliant performance from old man Fed in Shanghai. Pretty much unplayable when he serves like that - with Rafa not really close to even a break point.

Still no idea how Fed's backhand has improved so much this season.

According to the man himself not so many mishits with the bigger headed racquet.

Aye, fingers crossed he can have a solid last 6 months of the season and at that point who knows he could be pushing for a squad place.

A good way to look at the quality of the Sporting side is maybe to think whch Scottish internationals would actually make it into their starting line up..

Gordon's not getting in ahead of Rui Patricio, much as I like Gordon.
Coates and Mathieu are better than Mulgrew and Berra.
Piccini would easily be a first choice right back.
Left back is our best shout, but they have Fabio Coentrao who has 60+ games for Real Madrid.
Carvalho's better than Brown and McArthur's passing is frankly embarrassing compared to Bruno Fernandes.
Gelson Martins, quick direct, skillful.. makes Forrest look like a clown.
Acuna is now a starter for Argentina and crosses a ball better than anyone we have.
Dost is a €12m 6'5" Dutch striker who scored 34 in 31 league games last season.
Doumbia is an Ivorian, African Cup of Nations winner that a couple of clubs have paid over €15m for.

So basically.. if Gauld was in the Sporting starting 11, then he'd have a very good case for starting for us.

    Usual top info Andy.Appreciated.

Bannan has been excellent so far this season. Without question merits his call up who I wouldn't expect him to start given Armstrong's performances in his previous caps. The common problem for Bannan is one of role and position. Because he can hit a pass, managers tend to push him back down the field, him ending up as a defensive mid looking to hit long diagonals to wingers. Sort of the same as happened to Charlie Adam. Both players are actually at their best in an attacking midfield role, in Bannan's case he can use his low center of gravity to nip past people, accelerating quickly and slipping balls thru gaps. That's how he's been used recently and he looks a totally different player because of it. If we do use him, then hopefully it's in that role, rather than a deep sitting mid, where he easily gets lost.

Martin is questionable, but fair play for his goal to get 3 points against Slovenia. I don't begrudge him his place due to that.

Fletcher is not 100% fit, but is scoring goals. 2 in 4 this season (one of those 4 was a 3min sub appearance), and finished last season scoring 5 in 7. So while i'd expect Griffiths to play, Fletch is certainly in form as well.

Overall, i think it's a perfectly fine squad. Whittaker is obviously the only right back cover we could find. Darren Fletcher's playing days for us seem to be mostly over, but he's there for his leadership. Imo you take Snodgrass despite him not playing, just to try and give him a lift. Naismith's probably the most questionable for me. Still a decent player, but I'd probably give someone like McBurnie a taster, 20 mins against Malta or something.

Excellent analysis.Although he is obviously my favourite player,i could easily live with Armstrong in good form playing instead of BB.

Watched the whole tournament and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Scotland were very fortunate to win tonight, but they dug in well and were excellent defensively. Fay and Dieke have looked very suspect in the previous two games, but tonight both played out of their skin. Fay had a couple of iffy moments - handling it outside the box, and one almost going in over her head - but she made up for it with 3/4 very good saves. I have no idea how Spain didn't win that. A mixture of fortune for us, and some absolute sitters missed by them plus the woodwork too.

Well done the lassies though. And that win is the bogey off their back for the next tournament - if they qualify. The qualifying group looks alright for the WC with Scotland the 2nd seed and Switzerland top - who didn't qualify for the QFs of the Euros either.

I like the unpredictability of it too. Not knowing if the defender will hook it clear, the keeper will pull off a great save or a terrible blunder, or they'll score an absolute peach when in the box. The lack of simulation and very little mouthing off at each other/the refs too has been refreshing viewing as well as very dedicated, hard-working players.

Although a bit of a glory hunter and late to the party, I hope folk go to see them in the qualifiers in September and they go on and qualify for more tournaments.

    Good post.

  5. Didn't really want to get involved in this but i have to stick up for the women.Yes physically there are obvious differences, and they make their cash at grand slams easier(no 5 setters),but the talented women are just as good as talented men.Martina Hingis in the mixed eg,is phenomenal.
