-37 in Edmonton 5/6 years ago, which dropped to -47 with the wind chill. So cold that it was painful to breathe if you didn't give yourself a coule of seconds to adjust before breathing in.

I've always wondered why people choose to live in places where it gets that cold? I would imagine the summers are nice enough but that kind of temperature is barely habitable if you ask me. Fair enough if you're born there you don't necessarily know any different but why move there?

Although in saying that, extreme temperatures are maybe more bearable than our constant damp greyness.

I lived in Edmonton during this particularly cold spell:

Summers could be pretty nice though!  :)

I think somewhere around the middle leaves you at Temple not Leicester Square. I would suggest the Coal Hole on the Strand. There is an underground bar called Gordons Wine bar on Viliers Street on the road leading down from the side of Charing Cross. Why not go against the Tore Andre Flo and go across the river as opposed to various cliched places around Leicester Square. Loads round the south bank and great views as you walk across Hungerford Bridge.

Good suggestions!  I used to frequent those places in my time in London.

  4. blue rodeo @ calgary stampede this year ; first live concert i'd been to in about a decade

hokey country pish ; everyone else seemed to lap it up though

Aye, a few folk have tried to drag me along to see Blue Rodeo, but have managed to avoid them.

You remember Paul Weller at Crystal Palace in the late 90s (?). Thought Weller's set was a bit dull, but the support groups were OK - Republica (their singer was a fox), and Skunk Anansie.

Was a bit underwhelmed by BB King about 3 years ago, yeah I know he was around 85 years old then, but the show mainly involved him chatting away to the audience in the front few rows, with a wee bit of guitar playing thrown in. Show was about 1hr 20mins.
