No it was a save. Pretty certain of that.

Aye, it was technically a save I suppose, it hit Taffarel’s shoulder and went over the bar.

Johnston should have buried it though, he missed a great chance against Costa Rica also.

Doesn’t grate at all …….. he tried to finish the game, like a high quality player would. I’d hoof it out, he saw a killer pass ……., and fucked it.

It didn’t have to be a killer pass though, just a simple ball over the top into an area, and it would almost have certainly been 3-1!!……can you imagine the scenes!!

It's unbelievable to say the least. Maybe ppl in here would prefer another 20 years of not qualifying. I was surprised Clarke took the job and I am very thankful he did regardless of what happens in Germany.

A reality check is needed with some ppl in here. The pinnacle for Scotland is reaching major tournaments, if anybody in here expects much more than that then sorry you will be massively disappointed.

This is the type of mindset that has held us back over the years.

Why should the pinnacle for Scotland be to qualify only? Surely the ultimate goal / pinnacle for any footballing nation is to win a Euros or World Cup!

In my lifetime, I have witnessed countries with similar or even smaller populations reach the latter stages of tournaments, and even WIN them!!

Why should we not be aiming for this too?

I accept qualification is a good achievement , but this ‘it’s great just to be taking part’ attitude really does have to be kicked into touch, it runs through the veins of our country, and it does my head in!!

    Re last euros.

Czech game could have went either way, we lost

England, could have won it but could argue a draw was a fair result.

Croatia, outclassed they were a different level.

    How much have we progressed.

France will win the tournament so getting beat in Lille was no disgrace.

Beat Spain at home and could have got a result in Spain if we didn't have a dodgy ref.

I am not reading too much into the england freindly, we never showed up but I will say Che Adams for me is not international standard.

We can progress in Germany, but a kind draw would also help. So lets win next two games and I think Pot 2 should be guaranteed.

     🤞

I’m not convinced that was a strong Croatian side, we stood off them far too much that night and allowed Modric the freedom of Hampden.

Was all too familiar with the home performances versus Ukraine and England, rabbits caught in headlights stuff! I’m hoping Clarke and the team have learned from those games.

    It's Scotland - we will find a way to not get out of the group like;

    74 - Goal Difference

    78  - Goal Difference

    82 - Goal Difference

86 - 3 qualified out of our group and we only needed 2 points - got 1

    90 - Costa Rica

98 - Our worst yet with the exception of 86

Apart from that you also have to remember Clarke's team has to prove that they wont shit the nest when the chips are down and ignoring Norway away which was a freak of nature there is no evidence to suggest that won't happen again

Also Euro 96, out on goal difference! 🙈

Think it also helps how proud his old man would be of him 👍

Yes, that plays a big factor in this.

Whereas, it looks like Barnes is potentially using our hard earned success to achieve some of his personal goals, such as playing at a major tournament.

Deciding to switch cos we are doing decent. Not sure how I feel about players who are mid 20’s, who have already played for England suddenly deciding to play for us.

Doesn’t sit right with me this one, if true.

The timing is poor, we all but qualify for the Euros next year, and now he want to commit all of a sudden. Not for me, regardless of ability.

nothing like applying a bit of logic to upset the tartan army.  How many of our players would make the England first 11?  Contrast that with the teams of the 60s and 70s where you could argue that on paper we were close to parity with England.

England have a decent chance of winning the Euros next year.

You couldn’t quite bring yourself to say ‘better than England.’ We certainly were in the 70s, that’s not up for debate.

England, on paper, are far superior to us and could win the euros.  Depends how up for it they are - we are playing well just now.

Spoken like a true downtrodden ‘Scot’ who has no belief in themselves or the capabilities of their fellow countrymen!!

Let me guess, we can only win this game if we’re at our very best and England have an off night!! 😆…..which means we can never truly win in your eyes!!

Deary me, what a bleak, depressing outlook to have!!

  10. On a broader note, I feel that tournaments are quickly beginning to lose their character and individuality due to having multiple hosts. Neighbouring countries equally sharing a tournament is just about acceptable, but lop-sided bids such as the 2026 WC and the impending Euro 2028 tournament are ridiculous. They also seem to be politically motivated.

Cross continent bids will take things even further. Football is fast losing its soul, if it hasn’t already!!……or maybe we just have to move with the times!?

UEFA and FIFA have certainly limited their future options by increasing the participants to 24 and 48 for each respective tournament. Therefore, it would seem that single hosts may soon be a thing of the past.

To me, it feels like a further dilution of football all in the name of generating more financial gain for those in power.

  11. Although maybe not our best ever side on paper, the Euro 92 team could have won that tournament!

We played very well in the opening game against the Dutch and arguably deserved a draw. Should definitely have taken something from the next match versus Germany. Beat a solid CIS team in the final match. They still had a chance to qualify having drawn their opening  2 x matches.

If we’d progressed through that group it would have been a winnable semi final against Sweden or Denmark and then who knows!!!!

To qualify for Euro 92 we topped a very stuffy group which included Bulgaria, Romania and Switzerland. All of these nations went on to reach the knock out stages of USA 94. Bulgaria and and Romania both had golden generation sides. Indeed, off the top of my head, I believe Euro 92 was the only tournament that Romania did not qualify for during that decade (1990 - 2000).

Apologies, I have bored my mates with this one on many an occasion after a few pints, saw this thread and grabbed the opportunity to post this with both hands!! Haha

    The way I see it

He's English and he wants to play for England nothing wrong with that, good luck to the lad. If he changes his mind in a few years and came back in and improved our squad all for it

Its the price we pay for trying to blood in English youngsters at the youth level. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt, see Ireland with Rice, Grealish & Bamford. However still think its the right policy as if we didnt we would be well behind in the future

Wales and Ireland are very good at it, our issue is i dont think were as good as connecting with the Non Scottish Born Youth players that we get playing for us in the youth teams possibly needs improving so we get stronger loyalty and commitment from them at a younger age

No voter mentality. Happy to play second fiddle to our ‘superior’ neighbours, no ambition or belief that we can be better than them!!

This crawling after these (don't want to commit)guys is getting f..ing embarrassing.Give it a f..ing rest Clarke.

Aye it’s pathetic behaviour, but not surprising from a downtrodden nation such as the one we live in.

I’m guessing Clarke ended the conversation with something like, ‘well, if you change your mind or England don’t come calling just give me a call and we’ll get you capped’

  14. Just watched 2nd half of France v Croatia there.

Croatia are everything that we could or should be. Tight and compact without the ball. Comfortable when on the ball, and look dangerous also.

It’s actually sickening how far behind we are.

We’d be lucky to string 3 passes together away to France before shiting the bed and giving the ball away. Croatia were composed throughout.

Since becoming independent in the early 90s, Croatia have reached a WC semi final and final. They have also reached the knock out stages on various occasions, taking some massive scalps along the way.

All with a population of 4 million people.

Yet the dinosaurs in charge of our game, ex players, managers etc seem to think it’s unachievable for us to reach these heights.

Why do we have no ambition to achieve more at our national sport, why is there such a deep rooted acceptance of failure?

What other results were bad? Ukraine are a tough team, same with czech rep. You could argue they are bad results but i am talking about games where we are expected to win and instead lost or drew. I cant think of many apart from the ireland game today. Maybe one of the israel games could be considered as bad but israel away is not easy game either.

The manner of the defeat to Ukraine was shocking, in what was a World Cup semi final!!!!

It was yet another submissive performance under Clarke, looked like the players took to the field with a massive inferiority complex and negative outlook, basically just sat back and waited to get beat!

Exactly the same approach as the games against Croatia at the Euros, and to a lesser extent versus Czech Republic at the Euros too.

There is no doubting that these teams are good, but there is no way we should be getting beat that easily against anyone, particularly at Hampden.

The home game against Russia was also very similar. Scored early in this one, which clearly went against the game plan, but then we just went back into our shells and took a beating!

It was the same negative approach versus Austria at Hampden also, just sat off and admired them play football around us for much of the game, was lucky to get a late equaliser in that one.

Yesterday was an absolute embarrassment, playing against worst Ireland team in my lifetime, lacking in confidence, and we went there and basically rolled over and went down without a fight!

What was Clarke’s game plan yesterday? Did he even have one? Players looked lost and unmotivated in what was a massive game for us, it’s simply not good enough.

  16. Next manager can’t have a negative outlook or inferiority complex, so think that rules out most, if not all Scottish candidates.

The likes of Souness openly talks about us not having good enough players, so he’d be down playing our chances the minute he walked through the door, McInnes would also be very negative in his approach.

I’m tired of the pish, downtrodden Scottish mentality to everything, and the air of inevitability that our next failure is just around the corner.

We simply rolled over yesterday and went down without a fight against a poor Ireland team, it really isn’t good enough.

We are crying out for a manager who can set the team up in a non-submissive manner and inject some positivity, belief and enthusiasm into the players.

A Jurgen Klopp type mentality is required.

Slaven Bilic would do a good job in my opinion.

I purchased the 4 match package at the end of January, I opened up the email on Saturday and noticed that the quality of the QR code was terrible for printing, I emailed the SFA about this and the response was even though the QR quality was poor it would still scan and you would gain access, they also suggested going into your purchase history and resend tickets to your email but on trying this that function doesn’t exist.

I noticed the exact same thing regarding the quality of the QR code at the weekend.

Best way round it is to download the PDF of your ticket to your desktop and then email the PDF back to yourself, quality of QR code is then much clearer 👍

No, they are doing this weird thing, passing to each other, also not allowing Germany to stroll about the park. Strange concepts.

Yes, they way we stood off and admired the Croatian midfield passing it around last night (sometimes at walking pace) was a disgrace.

There’s no doubting they have some good players and a great player in Modric, but still no excuse to be so passive in our approach.

  19. It’s not just the other home nations who have progressed to the knockout and latter stages of tournaments, look throughout Europe.

Every other nation at one point has qualified out of their respective group, some even gone on to win the tournament!

Bulgaria, Romania, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greece etc etc

It’s really difficult to understand how/why we continue to fail as the generations come and go. You would think at some point the stars would align and we could string a couple of results together at the right time in order to qualify.

An average looking Swedish side has just topped their Euro 2020 group for example, why do we never do this!?

  20. The Irish co-commentator was very biased towards his own country and did not try to hide it, whereas the Scottish equivalent was very neutral and passive throughout.

For me, this sums up the mind set of each nation in a sporting and political sense.

Yet again, we blow it by making a wrong decision/mistake at the critical point of the match, it can’t be coincidence that this happens time and time again!

  21. How long into tonight’s game will it be until he mentions the fact that the Euros are now next year......and how waiting an extra year having not qualified since 1998 won’t hurt too much!?
