London Restaurants

I'm going to London with the Mrs at the end of the month and fancy going for a really nice meal one of the nights we're away. Anyone got anywhere they'd recommend?

Would be willing to pay an absolute maximum of £100pp, including drinks, etc.

Thanks

I love seafood, the bird is a bit fussy though... Will take a look at the menu with her and see her response.

Cheers.

What kind of food are ye after? The reason I ask is that there are some remarkable asian restaurants in particular all over the city and all at great value. Some of my favourites below when I stayed there.

Busaba in Soho - http://www.busaba.com/locations/busaba-soho

Jane Tira in Soho - http://www.jane-tira.co.uk/

Dishoom in Soho - http://www.dishoom.com/carnaby/

Polpo in Soho - http://www.polpo.co.uk/

The Westbury in Mayfair - http://www.alynwilliams.com/index_main.html

Tayyabs in Whitechapel - http://www.tayyabs.co.uk/

The Grain Store Kings Cross - http://www.grainstore.com/

Le Mercury in Angel - http://www.lemercury.co.uk/

Prawn on The Lawn in Islington - http://prawnonthelawn.com/

Poco Tapas Bar in Hackney - http://pocotapasbar.com/cafes/broadway-market-london/

Selale in Harringay - http://www.selale.co.uk/

gokyuzu in Harringay - http://gokyuzurestaurant.co.uk/

Chez Elles in Brick Lane - http://www.chezellesbistroquet.co.uk/

Most of these places will be within your £100pp and you'll have change for a pint afterwards. If I had to recommend i'd suggest exploring a bit and heading up to Harringay, Whitechapel or Hackney. All great places in their own right and all with great pubs and nightlife round about it.

I would avoid Dishoom unless you want to queue for 40 minutes to get in. Its good but not worth the queue imho

Tayyabs does the best lamb chops I have ever tasted in my life, its bio but a bit of a faff to find if you are not familiar with London. I would also recommend the steak chain Hawksmoor. I know in November they are doing three courses for £28 in the South Kensington branch as my work are having a night out.

Have a look at a site called Square Meal

http://www.squaremeal.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw4fy_BRCX7b6rq_WZgI0BEiQAl78nd8Yatb2B2Mv0-rUwyYYvzxGjRl-AQ2OdqrSYFsOv5uIaAuZh8P8HAQ

This has a variety of deals.

There are two places which I would say are special occasion venues. Locanda Locatelli where there is a chance you will see a couple of celebs, something which appeals to women from what I've seen. Eaten there twice and its been fantastic Italian food.

Another place I have not eaten at is Hutong in the Shard. its Chinese and probably booked out but give it a try. You get a double whammy in that you are so high up you get the view that normally costs £25 per person for a ticket. Very good and very popular so booking is essential.

Another place that is very popular though I have never eaten there is the Sky Garden on the top three floors of the walkie talkie building. Booking is a must but thinking about it, most people just go up of ra drink. You might even be able to do that in Hutong.

Just whoah there Joe. People actually pay 25 pounds to go up the shard and look out the window?! I mean please tell me this is not true. Surely not?

Would agree with all of the above (cannot comment on the others)

Tayyabs does the second best lamb chops.  Needos Grill has now surpassed them in my opinion, I would certainly not go to Needos as your nice night out, however if I had to recommend two night outs, Needos Grill would certainly be one of them.  Hawksmoor is excellent  and I am going to Hutong a week on Wednesday so I can give you my thoughts then.

To add to the list

Dinner by Heston - But you will not get any change out of £200

Bluebird in Chelsea

Clos Maggiore Covent Garden

Petrus - No change again

City Social

Hakkasan - this would be my choice as some of the others may blow your budget or difficult to book.

Sorry but I would not bother with Dinner. i was expecting the staff to be up themselves but they were not. The menu did an admirable job for them. Apart from the pate mandarin, I thought it was nothing special and did nothing to justify the prices charged. another place I have just thought of for its setting and romantic atmosphere is the Bleeding Heart restaurant near Farringdon. Excellent scoff and ambience.

Am not a fan of City Social either. Thanks for reminding me I had eaten there as I had tried to blank it from my mind :-). Will have to look up Needos Grill by the sounds of things

I love Dinner.  Been a couple of times now and would have it as one of the best meals I have ever had.  Not been in four years so I hope it has not went down hill recently as I have booked it for my brothers 40th.

City Social food was outstanding but it was utterly full of whankers.

Needos was set up by the head waiter of Tayyabs, mixed grill starter and dry meat curry.  It is to die for.

Also Barrafina for Spanish tapas.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys! Loads to look at there. Much appreciated. One of my friends has also recommended Hakkasen, so glad to see it's getting a further stamp of approval.

A lot of the top restaurants will do 3 course lunches for between £25 and £40. We went to Petrus a few months ago for lunch on a Saturday and it  was £37.50 each for 3 courses. Obviously drink was extra but give the sommelier your budget they'll generally see you have a good drink and some more?

Chez Bruce in Wandsworth is fantastic and if you fancy a great curry and cocktails Benares in Berkeley Square is tremendous.

Tayabs is indeed good, but don't go. Whitechapel is a shith0le, and not the type of place for a romantic meal.

Dinner is good, but costs far too much and you'll be lucky to get a reservation in the time you have.

The Wapping Project is unusual, but not a lot else around there.

The Shed in Notting Hill was some of the best food I've had in London, but very casual.

EDIT - Jsut remembered Baltic in Southwick - that is where you should go! Excellent!

Bit harsh on Whitechapel old chap. Lots of great boozers round about and a short walk to Bethnal Green which is a great part of the toon.

Hope you don't mind if I hijack this thread. 4 of us are heading to London that weekend for the Redskins/Bengals game.

Planning on meeting up with an old friend on the Saturday night. We are staying at Victoria and she and her pal are staying a bit further East around Mansion House tube station.

I reckoned that meeting somewhere in the middle around Leicester Square/Covent Garden would be easiest.

Any recommendations around there for food/drink? 1 of my mates not keen on Indian or seafood.

Cheers.

Any idea on type of food, budget (cheap and cheerful, mid priced, high end)

As for drinking establishments, its not an area that I go out in a lot however if I was meeting a few mates we would drink in a few of Tattershall Castle (boat at embankment), Chandos (nice and cheap beer in London), The Porterhouse (great choice of beer), The French House (very traditional french pub steeped in history), Waxy o Connors (best of the 'irish' pubs), The Cross Keys (if you want to avoid tourists).  There is a pub we always end up in that has someone playing a piano (not a performer, just someone in the pub) but I cannot remember the name of it.  Provided you are not looking for something specific, there is enough bars and pubs that you can have one drink then move somewhere else if it is not your fancy, there are plenty of places to check out.  If you are meeting quite early on Saturday, Punch and Judy in convent Garden is a good place to meet.  It has a balcony where you can watch the covent garden street entertainers.
