Watched a wee bit of this game. Referee was completely hopeless and seemed totally out of his depth. Constant referrals to TMO.

Now you would think the TMO should get things right but how often in rugby union is the TMO just wrong. Irelland scored a perfectly good try in the second half -the referee despite being just yards away went to the TMO. There were no camera angles showing the ball touching the ground and the TMO and referee between them disallowed the try as neither had seen the grounding.

In rugby league the referee has to signify whether he thinks its a try or not before referral upstairs. The video ref then has to find something to conclusively rule against the referee to change the decision - not two people having a guess at it. Much better system.

Totally agree with all you've said above.

First time I watched a rugby match in ages (Ireland/England) I was surprised at how many times the referee went upstairs for a ruling - despite being up with play and having the touch judges it was quite stop-start - and the replays were shown to the crowd too (surely not - not a fan of screens at any live venue).

Thought the English player should have been red carded for the high tackle about the Irish blokes neck - in slow motion it looked horrific.

He asked the wrong question IMHO. Should have been "any reason not award the try", should have given benefit to the attacking team.

Ho-hum.

Yes, IF the ref thinks it is a try but just wants to use the technology available, he should do the 'any reason not to' thing. On the field players and refs generally know, even if now there is much waving of arms to con the ref.  If he really doesn't know, and it is a heap of bodies over the line and hardly anyone really knows where the ball is, he should simply refer it. If after that it is still not clear, why should the benefit go to the attacking side? Rugby is just as much about tackling and defence as attack, some of the best bits of rugby I've ever seen or been involved in were guys literally throwing their bodies at the feet of several on rushing players to defend their line.

The benefit to the attacking thing is to encourage attacking play.

Mat the end of the day we all want to see try's scored. Nobody wants a 9-6 game. I just think if the benefit went to the attacking team we would have had a barnstorming last ten on Saturday.
