Dick Pound specifically mentioned Kenya in the press conference

Not seen it yet Biffer, what was the context of the Kenya mention? Bribes?

The only thing i have even a modicum of surprise over is the use of coercion rather than just bribes, might be a cultural difference. I hope they don't try and make out it is just a Russian problem (although all their athletes should be banned from competition immediately until they can be compete under better testing) everyone is at it. That's why Russia doesn't win everything.

the problem is the layman isn't too informed and they are still trying to get over the fact that there is a guy called "Dick Pound".

It's not even a complete report, they're still parts of it ongoing in a criminal sense, so worse/better to come. I hope the whole lid comes off.

Brief mention of it here, widely quoted as saying Kenya has "a real problem"

This was only a look at Russia though.

"The commission was not asked to examine separate doping claims made in August when The Sunday Times and a German broadcaster claimed leaked blood tests from 5,000 athletes over 11 years showed an "extraordinary extent of cheating". The IAAF said the claims were "sensationalist and infuriating"."

Not looking at the "cheating" outlined in August.

I think it's the truth about Russia but i wish the same zeal would be applied to our own athletes. That commission was not allowed to look at all the recent exposure.

Shows bribes taken by IAAF officials. If they took Russian bribes they would take others, but that wasn't investigated cause the limits of the investigation were narrow, like political enquiries.

Totally agree with this. Listening to media reports since this broke, it is painting a picture that Russia are the totally corrupt from bottom to top, went in reality we all know that cheating is rife in top class athletics, worldwide.

Just heard Paula Radcliffe throwing her tuppence worth in.................really Paula?

Who next for their opinion on the "cheating Ruskies".....Mo Farrah? Lance Armstrong?

Just got caught up with all the leaked emails etc, holy ###### shit. seriously read this email

https://twitter.com/hajoseppelt/status/679031314104885249

Seems like Lusanne is a "dirty lab", loads of stuff coming out confessions (christmas new year good time to bury bad news it seems)

That email is crazy though.

Yeah I read that email a couple of weeks back, it's really crazy. Written as if they see doping as something to be stage managed rather than something to be eradicated. I thought that was the case but it's funny seeing it actually written.

They caught their first mechanical doping rider today.

Small motor inside a bike. Pretty crazy, well that's another method of cheating that has been exposed , in fact when this first came to light as a possibility in 2010 (rumours about Cancellara) most didn't even think it was possible. I myself was thinking "seems pretty unlikely". Well it exists at least.

Mechanical doping still puzzles me a bit.

Whatever you use must be big enough to be able to knock out a certain wattage to make it worth having, but it must also be light enough so the weight of the device doesn't completely negate the power it produces. And it still has to be able to fit in to a seat tube.

On this case specifically, why use it in CX?

Surely of all the cycling disciplines, CX may be the one where using a motor helps the least, with all the time off the bike, descents, muck, water etc.

The UCI have obviously found something as they've impounded the bike pending further investigation and the rider has seemingly came up with some rubbish excuse about it being her friends bike, but there's been no confirmation around what kind of device it was.

We don't know what specialist technology there is. Her excuse was the bike was a friends who bought one of her old ones and fitted a motor to keep up with pros on their training ride. So if that is actually true it must have some punch. even 50 Watts for a minute on a climb would be enough.

The whole thing is crazy. As one writer in a cycling magazine put it: We have these ever more outrageous conspiracy theories by cycling fans and the sport keeps proving them right.

Folk talk about it now, but i can mind early 2000's trying to tell folk Armstrong was a fraud. Folk thought I was mental, why would he do it blah di blah??

On the CX thing someone mentioned constantly changing bikes so harder to detect get more than one batteries worth of power etc.

Seems like folk were complaining about the rider specifically, her brother has an EPO ban as well.

It would explain Froomes acceleration without a rise in heart beat in the leaked files ;)

I heard that one this morning. I actually feel quite bad for her in this instance as on the face of it, she's been up-front about it all and just got caught out by not paying attention to new banned substances. Nike have dropped her pretty quickly as well which I can understand from their perspective but it is extremely harsh considering the nature of this particular case and their track record. There may be more going on behind the scenes though.

Don't really agree with the first part of your post.  She was taking a heart medication that is not licensed for use in the US, where she lives. I don't know if she has a heart condition. I do know that a lot of athletes takes this drug because it improves athletic performance.  It was only banned at the start of year so taking it to improve athletic performance was not, until recently, against the rules.  It does seem somewhat morally dubious, though.

As for Nike, they do what is best for their shareholders.  Her contract has, I believe,  been suspended.  If they think they can make money out of her in future I am sure she will be back.

Read up more on it, i'm leaning with Denny on Sharapova.

It's not medically used in America where she resides. It's a former soviet bloc drug.

Also this has been known about for 15 months , WADA did trials all of 2015 and whatever they found showed it was being misused so it was added to the banned substance list. Everyone knew about it.

Also how the hell did she get to announce it? at a press conference? It speaks more to how blase athletes are in tennis with drug testing, there seems to be a culture where you should have nothing to fear, even if you get caught you serve a silent ban, like the umpires above.

After a couple of days away from the initial news and reading more on it, I'm in agreement with you two now. I guess the Sharapova conference had the desired effect if it managed to get sympathy from someone like me.

Putting aside the argument about whether it was right to improperly use this drug when it was not banned (as it was not banned) do folk believe that she simply did not realized the drug had been banned 70 odd days ago?

I am not sure why she would keep taking it if she was aware it had been banned. That does not make sense. So I do wonder if she simply did not know it had been banned. In which case this does seem a little harsh. Can't help but wonder if the fact she is Russian made this into something bigger than it really was/is.

I'd imagine she employs a whole team of medical people to ensure that what she is taking doesn't break any rules.  So maybe they all got it wrong.  And maybe she was taking it for her heart condition. Then I would feel sorry for her.

By the way, a number of athletes from various sports and of various nationalities have been done for this in the last month.

No it's still banned and she should be getting what she is. Another half dozen at least have popped recently for it too. Which speaks more to the blase nature of athletes and drugs when it should really be anything under, also she would have declared it on all her doping forms the last 10 years too (which i believe is the case).

However one of the astute guys on doping i know has remarked (paraphrase) "everywhere Russia Projects soft power in the world is under attack at the moment"
