Big Ramy 1314 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Just watched another documentary on Maradona, and I have to say, and this is only my opinion, he was better than Messi.. Maradona got kicked all over the park, especially in his Napoli days. He just got on with it. The only way they could stop him was to foul him. He was steps ahead of anyone on the park and his dribbling skills were a joy to watch.. This debate will go on forever, Messi is great, but he never got the abuse on the Park Maradona did... So Diego tips it for me.... Just a shame his career, and life ended the way it did..... Quote
Big Ramy 1314 Posted August 6 Author Posted August 6 Forgot to mention, that goal against Engerland WC 86, actually both goals, should give him the GOAT right there, from a Scottish perspective of course...😉 Quote

Knickers Messi was quicker, has greater statistics , greater consistency and far more longevity And he also was kicked to fuck throughout his career https://www.statmuse.com/fc/ask/most-total-fouls-committed-against-messi-by-la-liga-teams Quote

Messi was also surrounded by talent, more than Diego.. Regardless of WHO the GOAT is, I am blessed to have been able to watch them both... Quote
Orraloon Posted August 6 Posted August 6 It's still Pele for me. Very close between Messi and Maradona. Maradona at his peak was probably just a wee bit better than Messi, but his peak didn't last very long. I'm going for Messi as number 2 but not much in it. Quote

I tried to post a video from Youtube on here showing some of the assaults on Messi but La Liga only allows it to be watched on Youtube Quote
vanderark14 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Could messi do it whilst off his chops on ching or with a hangover? Quote

Just watch what Gentile did to Maradona Spain 1982 !! Maradona got kicked all over the park for 90 minutes, with no help from the officials.. If they tried that with Messi, they would have been in the jail !!! Quote
glasgow jock Posted August 7 Posted August 7 At all their peaks, Maradona by far the most naturally gifted / talented, Messi / Ronaldo etc more dedicated and more assisted by sports scientist / nutrition etc etc All about opinions of course but for me (all things considered) Maradona = GOAT Quote
McTeeko Posted August 7 Posted August 7 I’ve always argued Maradona in the past as that was my era growing up and that period was impressionable for a wee lad. However recently speaking to an Argentine pal of mine who made a great point - Maradona was the best for three years, Messi has been the best for twenty years. Hard to argue. Quote

The game has changed over the years, not for the better if you ask me. It's hard to compare Pele to Maradona, as football was also different in the 50s and 60s. I will say however, Messi era was, is easier than when Maradona played. Nutrition, medical technology, training facilities, VAR, big money, refereeing is more favourable now to elite players than ever before.. You can't touch anybody these days, the physical game Pele and Maradona played through is long gone.. Like I said, it's a matter of opinion, but as far as pure natural skill, Maradona for me.... You will never see the likes of Eusebio, Beckenbauer, Cryff, Best, Law, ever again unfortunately.... Money and greed has ruined the beautiful game..... Sometimes I just sit and watch old You Tube videos and matches from years gone by.... Quote
Goozay Posted August 7 Posted August 7 Messi is obviously a brilliant player, but he played poorly in two separate World Cup Finals. The 2014 and 2026 World Cup finals both went to extra time. 120 minutes in which Messi failed to score or provide an assist. If he is definitively the "Greatest of All Time" he would have had more of an impact on the 2014 and 2026 World Cup Finals. Quote

Yep, both Maradona and Messi had amazing careers, but to say one is "The Greatest of All Time" is flawed. Quote
