In a statement released to the Associated Press, Kevin Lamour described the controversial plans as "the project of one person" and said "the time has now come for football political leaders to ask themselves the right questions and make the right decisions". Infantino said it had become clear the project had "created divisions" that are "no longer in the interest" of its original objective. The Swiss added: "As a result, this proposal will not proceed." Infantino, 56, is now under immense pressure as he seeks re-election for a fourth term as president at the Fifa Congress in March. The English FA has sent a letter withdrawing its support for Infantino in reaction to the plan to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors. European governing body Uefa said in a statement its conditions had not been met, despite Infantino's plan being aborted. Quote
