Italy, Denmark, Poland, etc. Sorry for the late reply, but it's Friday night. I know we did qualify, but imagine us in Zapopan or Guadalupe. We have no record there. The teams you mention lost playoffs in Europe, so maybe they are just shite? Mibbee 🫣 I know, I know, but beware of what you wish for, but enjoy your evening 🤘 Quote

Starting every game at a different time is the problem. You haven't explained why you think that is a problem. Quote

I don’t think Scotland are any worse than those two from what I’ve watched. Quote

Yes there would be an extra 24 group matches squeezed into the schedule, but there's no obligation to watch all of them. Training facilities would be harder to come by though. And the Panini book would cost even more of a fortune to fill. Quote

I thought the thread was about stopping the need for third place qualifiers which means a 32 or 64 team tournament. I really do think the World Cup needs to become hosted by continents now with no host countries gtd a place. Having said all that I think it should be a 32 team competition even if that means we never qualify again. Quote

They would only need to extend it if they made teams play extra games. That would be to give teams adequate recovery times between games. But each team doesn't need to play more games. The teams that get to the final would play the same number of games as this time round. 3 group games then the top two in each group go into the round of 32. There would be more games at the group stage, but they could be fitted in by playing an average of 5.3 games per day instead of the current 4 games per day average. Quote

Maybe I’ve oversimplified it by having exactly eight games a day but it would mean three rest days between games for everyone which is surely enough even for today’s players. I am trying to shorten the time the group stages in the tournament takes as well as increase the countries involved. FIFA would probably prefer a game every three hours mind you. Quote

Other than final group games no need to have games on at the same time. Games could start at Noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm, 10pm (Spain has a culture of playing games late at night). Yes there will be a bit of overlap but it would be doable. The early games could feature the Asian teams and the late games the North and South American teams. European and African teams would be okay with any of these times. As someone said, with 64 teams there will be a lot of games that will be between teams you may not want to watch so no need to watch more than 2-3 games per day. Whilst I would prefer 32, the genie is now out of the bottle having gone to 48 and FIFA have seen how much money they can make so the natural next step for those mobsters is to go to 64 teams and try and get the likes of China qualified. They will argue that the extra 16 teams this time has worked given how well the likes of Cape Verde have done. Quote

Why would you want to shorten it, though? Same as this year would be fine. Scotland would still be heading home after 10 days, as normal. If we qualify that is. Quote

No idea what the length has been in previous tournaments. Quote

I wouldn't mind it going on a wee bit longer. There have been some cracking games in this WC. None of them involved Scotland obviously. Quote

This year is 39 days, 2022 is a false comparison as it was as compressed given the time of year, 2018 & 2014 were both 32 days. Quote
drew Posted July 4 Posted July 4 I'd just make it a 64 team world cup. Merge South and North America into one qualifying section and merge Oceania with Asia. Gives 4 regional qualifiers each producing 16 teams. Get folk will argue quality, certain continents should get more teams as they are better etc. But for me the world should be as well represented as possible. Also we're getting to the stage in Europe we're playing a lot of the same teams regularly due to the Nations League, Qualifiers, The Euros and in the World Cup some groups have 2 European sides. Lets have it a bit mixed up. Quote

Lets have it a bit mixed up. This is one of the biggest drawbacks of the Nations League (which on the whole has been a very positive thing for most UEFA nations imo). You don't have opportunities to play against non-UEFA members very often. Just looking at our matches against non-UEFA members since the year 2000: Year # Opponents 2000 1 AUS (H) 2001 0 - 2002 4* NGA (H); KOR (A); RSA (N); CAN (H) 2003 1 NZL (H) 2004 1 TRI (H) 2005 1 USA (H) 2006 1 JPN (A) 2007 1 RSA (H) 2008 1 ARG (H) 2009 1 JPN (A) 2010 0 - 2011 1 BRA (N) 2012 2 USA (A); AUS (H) 2013 1 USA (H) 2014 1 NGA (N) 2015 1 QAT (H) 2016 0 - 2017 1 CAN (H) 2018 3 CRC (H); PER (A); MEX (A) 2019 0 - 2020 0 - 2021 0 - 2022 0 - 2023 0 - 2024 0 - 2025 0 - 2026 4+ JPN (H); CIV (N); CUW (H); BOL (N) *We also played against the Hong Kong League XI +Not including the three matches at the World Cup. Before the Nations League started, we typically played one non-UEFA member per year. Now our only opportunities are in the prelude to major tournaments; in the rare case we'd get a smaller qualifying group without playing in the Nations League play-offs; or potentially in the June slots when players are supposed to be on their holidays.
