I can legit see a reset to 2000-2019 where we didn't qualify for anyone.

The Clarke Haters probably won't admit it, but I'm guessing a lot of them are Yoons who loathe Scotland doing well at anything.

And yes, qualifying for Tournaments is "doing well."

Either that or they're just a bunch of dour faced energy Vampires.

By being miserable and angry they've missed out. Personally, I've enjoyed every second as Steve Clarke as manager.

Remember the transition from Brown to Vogts?

Get really for a shot of deja vu.

Oh aye Kumnio, slasher, and Ally bongo are hardcore yoons🤣🤣🤣

I stand by what i said earlier.

I don't think any of the Clarke haters on here are actually "yoons" tbf.

I mostly enjoyed Clarkes reign but the tournaments were pretty disappointing overall and that can't be denied.

Not sure the transition from brown to vogts will necessarily be the case this time round as I think we have enough players who will stick around for the next couple of qualifying campaigns and we have a few young players who look promising including a young striker who might be the goalscorer we have been craving.

You'd be surprised. The amount of right wing people here is... weird.

We have a ceiling. Ultimately, a team is limited by the limitations of the players. Steve Clarke should not have left this way.

I don't blame him, though.

McGinn and McTominay, Robertson and Tierney aren't getting any younger.

Then there's 25% of Scots starting in the SPL this round of matches.

25%.

There's a few right wing types who post in the anything goes section but I don't think they are actually unionists.

Theres not that many right wing ppl on this board in general. I would say the vast majority are left leaning or central. The vast majority are pro independence and I can't actually think of anyone off the top of my head who isn't an indy supporer. Saying that theres bound to be one or two though as the board has many members.

Yes we have a ceiling and I would agree that we are close to that ceiling. Problem is we don't want to go downhill and we have a squad of players who should qualify for the euros if managed correctly.

I think Clarke had to leave tbf. He had three attempts at getting out the groups and failed despite having the luxury of the third placed teams getting through in every tournament. As much as I have defended him on here you can't keep giving a manager more attempts at tournaments if he keeps failing at them.

Regarding mcginn and mctominay etc I think mctominay will easily be around for the next two qualifying campaigns and mcginn, robbo and tierney will be around for the next campaign. That means the next manager should have a decent first team to work with despite our squad being weak in certain areas.

Our squad is good enough to go to the euros and potentially get out the groups so I don't think the job is that unattractive but it's certainly not going to attract a top manager unless Moyes becomes available.

There's no manager who could've gotten us out of the group stage.

People moan about "not having a go"

There's zero creativity, zero flair and zero goals at the very top level, in the squad.

Not sure why some fans think we have the capacity to be all prime Brazil.

Clarke's remit was to make us hard to beat, to get us working as a team.

He achieved it.

We could bring in Guardiola. Still wouldn't change anything.

You're just pushing for an argument with your over-the-top tripe or abusive posts.

Most posters on here are realists, it's just a lot of us think that Clarke could have got a bit more out of this squad in the 3 tournaments we've played in under him.  Okay, he's had bad luck with injuries and possible penalties we could have had, but you can't deny he's had the best squad of players playing at their peak we've had for quite some time. Yet you think our coach is not in any way to blame for the poor performances against the Czechs, Croatia, Germany & Hungary, as well as the 3  bang average performances in this WC. That's 7 out of 9 games in major championships where performances and entertainment have been poor that apparently you've enjoyed every second of 🤣 You really are on the wind up!

Brown was also too loyal to players, Vogts had to start afresh with very little talent coming through.  The new Scotland head coach job will have it difficult but not even near to the extent Vogts had as most of our experienced better players should have another tournament in them.

I applaud your optimistic outlook.

Alas, I do not share your optimism.

My prediction of another two decades of drought will probably come to pass.

You know what will happen then?

Scotland fans will pine for a manager who makes us hard to beat and get us working as a team.

Another case of deja vu. 😉

I think thats hyperbole to suggest theres no manager who could of gotten us out the groups. If we had a bit more of a go v Morocco we could have nicked a draw. Brazil weren't that great either and if we hadn't defended like idiots we could have potentially nicked a draw from that game.

Saying that it was a tough group and I dont think many managers get us out of it.

Your right in saying we have very little flair or creativity and lack of goals is major problem but we definitely could have done a little bit better in terms of going forward and hanging on for dear life v Haiti wasn't acceptable either.

Yeh I agree with your last points. Clarke did his job and made us a fairly decent unit. I will always look back on his time as a success but failing at three tournaments isn't acceptable and I think he had to go. The Hungary game is probably my biggest disappointment regarding Clarke. They were there for the taking and we chose to sit back and not even try to attack. Haiti was disappointing as well but I doubt we go through even if we had beaten them by 2 or three goals. We needed four points and that was always unlikely given the group we were in.

We should also be able to win a game at the euros which means we should stand a decent chance of getting out the groups.

There's no way we wont qualify for the euros for two decades.

great post and a welcome break from Beavis and Butthead discussing the manager role

What beavis and butt head don't get is we do not expect to compete with the top ten but teams like ours and teams lower than us have had good tournaments and given the big guns and run for their money, we have never done it. I would expect is to spring a surprise result at least once which would have seen us through to the next stage of a tournament. Under clarke we never looked like doing that. Overall I enjoyed Clarke's time as manager, its the best we have had since I was 17 BUT initially we were happy to be at a tournament, the targets change as the team start to qualify more than once, Clarke failed to reach the new target

Also, our fans didn't demand his sacking and neither did the SFA, Clarke resigned which makes this his decision. He never mentioned anything about the fans being too demanding.

Scotland fans aren't demanding at all. We are some of the least demanding I've seen. Saying we expect to compete with the world's best is a complete lie.

Poison chalice? I doubt Steve clarke himself would agree with that considering he says it's been the proudest part of his career and he's just had us at three tournaments for the first time since 1998, he just failed to take it to the next step

I know you will ignore this post because this post and my previous completely proved you wrong

Have you seen some of the statements up thread about the losses to Brazil and Morocco being a disaster?

A couple of people who disliked clarke on a message board isn't representative of the whole support and certainly not enough to make the SFA take notice or more importantly enough to make Clarke resign

The silence around the whole process really is deafening. As you say, not even a sliver of credible reporting in the press, and we've got a game in a little over 6 weeks. I think we almost have to accept that Naismith will be in charge for the Nation's League. The big question is what the feck are the SFA actually doing?! As if they were actively recruiting there would surely be some gossip around the process.

The silence isnt a bad thing, these things should be done discretely and not played out in the media.

Fair comment. There's an abundance of reasons why recruitment should be done discretely.

Bit of a Father Ted lookalike and therefore doesn't set the ladies pulses racing.😁

Good football manager though.

🤣

Ach, Vlad's not a bad looking fella, to be fair. Not Handsome Herve levels of handsomeness perhaps, but if I look as good as him in fifteen years I'll be happy.

He's a snappy dresser too (unlike some of the other coaches mentioned) and yes, a very good manager.

The results weren’t a disaster, the performances were and that’s on the manager.

I'm grateful to Steve Clarke for helping us qualify but I'm not sure he made us hard to beat. We rode our luck in several qualifiers and our defence was often shaky, to say the least.

I'm not sure he got us working as a team either. Often, players who had played loads of games together, looked like they were complete strangers who had never met before.

🤔 I'm not sure that's the most accurate comparison. Beavis and Butthead were a bit too lucid and open-minded. They remind me more of Zig and Zag.

There's nae shame in losing to Morocco or Brazil but we were completely powderpuff for the first half of both those matches and we gifted goals to the opposition. We weren't cut open very often by either team but they didn't need to try.

We might have sneaked a draw against Morocco but it would have required some favourable officiating and a bit of luck (neither of which we received) but ultimately we failed to register a single shot on target against them, which is a bit embarassing.

Very much so. It didn't help that we set up differently in each of the three games. Against Brazil in particular, it looked at times like the players didn't know what they should be doing. Players have bad games from time to time but mistakes were made that you wouldn't expect from players operating at that level and with that degree of experience.
