It's a tricky job. The squad needs an overhaul. There's a balancing act in retaining good and experienced players who've at least helped us get to tournaments whilst bringing in new blood. Some retirements may help in the decision making. Quote

Big Ramy 1314 Posted June 28 Posted June 28 The New incoming Manager needs to read my post !!! You ignore all the results from our past. You ignore who got us to the tournament's. You ignore who Clarkes favorites were.... You start with a clean slate.. You pick the 11 most talented players every match, regardless of who they are, and who they play for.. This is a complete rebuild. Every player you bring in this squad is there on ability, personality, and availability.... Do this my friend, and you will have success... Oh, and your number one priority ... Find a goal scorer.. Finally, if you are good enough, you are old enough, play them. Don't sit them on the fucking bench..... Yir welcome.. BR 1314🏴👊 Quote

But I suppose you could counter that with how well Craig Bellamy has done at Wales with very little experience. I think it would be very advantageous for him to know a lot about players available to him and the nature of the game played in Scotland to realise the differences between it and international football. Always felt Vogts struggled because of that primarily. I look at the English fella thats taken over at Sweden...I doubt he had any real knowledge of fitba over there. Its drastically different times from when Vogts took over...technology is used far more to identify players, and the squad isn't in need of a major overhaul, just a real freshening up. Vogts came into a squad who had become ancient together Quote

He speaks fluent Swedish. I'm sure he knew plenty about the Swedish game. Quote

A comparable appointment for us would be Postecoglu, someone who has been in the country, knows the game here and knows the media. Unfortunately I don't think he's going to be remotely interested. Struggling to think at the minute so long as Scot Gemmill is nowhere near being in charge. I can actually see a temporary appointment being made. We've around three months until the next game. Unless they find someone in the meantime they'll have to give it to someone on an interim basis. Naisy seems an obvious choice, or ask big Sam Allardyce to step in - at least we won't have to worry about that playing out from the back pish that cost us against Brazil! 😄 Anyone but Scot Gemmill though. Maybe someone like Ange or Hjulmand would make some improvements and keep us at the tournaments and maybe make us take the next step. Only time will tell. I'm really sceptical that a change in manager will improve anything, hopefully I'm wrong on that. I don't mind that Clarke has walked away but who we replace him with could end up being a disaster. We have seen years of misery before Clarke and it's not unlikely that it could end up being that way again if we get this new appointment wrong. Quote

Was it rumoured he might once have been interested in the Scotland job? "He led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2008 European Championship... He was praised for his long-standing service to the national side and credited with successfully overseeing the introduction of a series of young players from the under-21 squad to the senior side." I'd be happy with Billic. I don't remember him being linked with Scotland before, but he did put in for the Ireland job (I think the stumbling block there was he insisted on bringing his own coaching team, which was a no-no for the FAI for some reason). 5 hours ago, Saint4805 said: Can't edit my post above but I'd be sounding out Kasper Hjulmand. His Denmark side were excellent and following Alonso at Leverkusen was always going to be tough He's currently out of work too I hadn't realised he'd left Leverkusen - he was one of my preferences to take over from Clarke after the Euros. He'd be an excellent appointment if we could persuade him, although I suspect he isn't short of potential suitors. Gus Poyet is another possibility - did pretty well with Greece and also threw his hat in the ring for the Ireland job. Out of work currently after a stint in Saudi (I think). Quote

Clarke has been a victim of his own success, qualifying for tournaments was something we could only dream of since 1998 until he finally got us there. Now it's not enough, and the bar is performances at finals and progress through the group stage I get the clamour for change, he's taken the team as far as he can and I'm not sure he's got it in him to take us to a tournament and have us playing the type of football everyone wants to see. I'm not really convinced there's anyone out there who would want the job that can do much better, hopefully I'm wrong. Quote
bigfingers Posted June 28 Posted June 28 I can’t see the squad getting totally ripped up unless players retire. Least a new manager will start picking players on form rather than reputation so we should see a few changes to the squad. Goalkeeper wise is a total nightmare as there is no one playing for their clubs and that’ll frustrate the hell out of whoever comes in. Quote

I think another manager could have us playing better at a tournament but wether that manager gets us to a tournament is not a certainty. Clarke consistently got good results in qualifying and I am not sure another manager will do that. Clarke definitely raised the bar in terms of expectations but the level of squad we have isn't good enough to expect much more than what we achieved imo. Saying that we should have gotten out the groups of one of the three tournaments we were at so I understand the criticism regarding that. Quote

I haven't seen that level of organisation from Scotland in years. We can't even sort out our press or having the right distance between defence and midfield Given the grief Clarke got for being too defensive, I can't believe anyone would want the Ghana manager. He's well known for playing the most defensive anti-football known to man. Quote

Yep, this will be the test for everyone that thinks it’s easy to qualify these days with the expanded formats. Did the last 2 qualifying campaigns feel like easy? Taking 3 points against Spain. Winning in Norway. 2 campaign wins against top seeds Denmark. I don’t think I ever got the sense that any of that was or should have been a formality for us. Aside from all that what is often not noted is the massive difference in results against teams below us. There’s no longer been the draws/losses that scarred us over Smith/McLeish/Burley/Strachan. Results like 0-1 losses at home to Belarus, Norway, draws with Lithuania, Slovenia, losses to Kazakhstan. The list goes on. Clarke more or less eliminated those disastrous results. I don’t disagree that things had come to a head and needed change but I’m not confident that we’ll see improvement in outcomes. Quote

I suspect that sometime this week Craig Gordon will retire from international football. Will be a shame but totally understandable at his age and he's not considered No.1 anymore. In my mind he's been one of the all time Scotland great players. Quote

There does seem to be actual talk in the media about the possibility of Ange being appointed. I know its all bullshit, but the very idea that he could be a contender is exciting. It would be a risky move because if the players are not up to his style of play it could be a disaster, but it would certainly confirm whether or not the players are capable . Quote
