Won promotion with Norwich and Sunderland.- two clubs that were a complete shambles when he took over. Took Hamilton into the SPL and had them punching in the top half of the table. Narrowly missed promotion with Millwall this year who were also struggling when he joined. He has done very well at most clubs given the resources he has had to work with.

He's a far better option than Souness.

Alex Neill definately worth a punt.

I still think and experienced / good potential coach partnership would be the way forward.

Get Strachan back with either Fletcher, Brown or Maloney ( or others, McAllister, Collins?) on the understanding that the younger man will take over after the 2028 Euros.

Sure WGS would relish the job.

Sounds like a decent idea. Strachan with Maloney or fletcher as assistant.

Are people seriously suggesting Strachan in any capacity?

His CV is pretty good tbf. Hes been out of management for a long time though.

Whats your main objection to him being suggested?

There's alot of dross being suggested and the Scotland job isn't exactly desirable or well paid in the grand scheme of things so we have to think of realistic options.

He had the job when his stock was at his highest and failed.

He has been out the management game for a long time, hasnt done any coaching etc and nothing to suggest that he has developed new skills etc. He wouldnt bring anything new now that he didnt before.

If people want to go down the rookoe route like Fletcher for example then just commit to that. Im sure Fletcher has plenty of coaching contacts who he could bring in to do the sessions etc. There is zero need for an old head who has already failed to do the mentor thing. Totally undermines the young guy aswell.

Statistically, his stats as Scotland boss stands up with the best of them as in wins percentage etc. worth remembering too his squad then was not as strong as it is now in my opinion.

Jock Stein got two cracks at the job - his second stint was a success. McLeish got two cracks at the job I his second stint was a failure.

In my opinion we could do a lot worse but do take your point about how long he has been out of management. That would be a concern.

Can only read the Gemmill news as positive as it suggests some actual strategic thinking for once, hopefully there is some kind of new approach being taken with how the 21s feed the A team, play the same way etc

Just heard he stood down to replace Clarke. Into 6/4 with the bookies

Nice try but no. Statement thanks him for his time involved with Scotland and wishes him the best in future. Hardly seen them doing that.

Aye, the silence from the SFA is deafening, as is the lack of journalistic curiosity. In a couple of weeks the fourth estate will be back their holidays and normal service will be resumed, i.e. drivelling about Celtic and Rangers ad infinitum.

I'd like to think the SFA are currently wading through piles of CVs, on and off calls with agents and dotting the i's and crossing the t's on contracts, or at the very least compiling a job spec for their ideal candidate, but I suspect that would be to give them far too much credit.

The decision-makers will be on holiday and not see it as urgent.

Strachan was quite unlucky I felt with euro 2016 and WC 2018.

Germany managed to allow a MON hoofball Ireland 4 points off them, I mean how often would that happen? We were also unbeaten v Ireland and Poland.

He was also a last few seconds Stuart Armstrong pass away from being in the top 4 seeded teams in the play offs. Alas we missed out on goal difference to Slovakia.

Had us playing some terrific football with not a great degree of talent. Fine margins indeed. Could have been a hell of a legacy left by him

Those are good points.

I would happily see Strachan get another chance. He could be a stop gap for a couple of years until after the euros and then there might be some better options available. If we get out the groups then the job would be more attractive as well.

He shat his breeks in Dublin when we’re on the ascendancy and looking good for a second goal when he took Anya or Maloney off for Berra. The less said about the debacle he overseen in Tbilisi the better

The horrendous showing against Lithuania at Hampden was 2 points chucked away right after a press conference saying he wasn’t interested in the fans questions that were going to be asked

It wasn’t unlucky. It was poor management. Another manager with a bit of foresight could well have turned those draws and defeats into victories seeing us in back to back play offs

Every manager we have had since Craig brown had results that were similar or worse than Strachans.

Clarke was actually pretty good at grinding out results against lower opposition.

Your expectations are too high if you are pulling up some bad results that Strachan had. You could do that with every manager we have ever had.

Sadly, you're probably right.

I agree with you there. I didn't mind Strachan and at the time I wouldn't have been against him getting one more campaign, but he's not the guy to take us forward in 2026. He hasn't coached anyone, AFAIK, since he left Scotland nine years ago - and he must have had offers at some point during that period - which tells me he's probably done with management.

At a push I could see him coming back for a brief period as interim boss but even that probably wouldn't interest him.

I wouldn't mind Strachan as an SFA director of football to ruffle a few feathers and bring about player development improvements.

I think he's too old for the dug out and the players wouldn't take to him.

Like to see Fletcher in some capacity., maybe under an experienced European manager with a view to taking over  in the future.I heard Lambert didn't rule it out though said would have to be asked rather than apply🤔. Hope Naismith is doesn't get anywhere near the job.

All valid points. Steven Fletcher was a baw hair away from converting Robertson cross in Tbilisi and Griffiths decided to put a header he would have scored for Celtic straight at the Lithuanian keeper. Fine margins/not enough quality in the final 3rd as per usual.

We should've beaten Poland at least once too, IIRC. If we had won in Georgia, we would've finish third and would've been into the play-offs (even with both Poland and Ireland getting points off of Germany). That was a horrible qualifying group to have anyway (not as bad as 2014 mind). Poland were our Pot 3 side.

We gave ourselves too much to do in the 2018 qualifiers after drawing with Lithuania at home. Winning that would've put us into the play-offs. By the end, we were probably at our best level since the Euro 2008 qualifiers too.

Strachan doing ABE ads for Paddy Power. I think he has given up on management. Can't believe some are throwing his name in the mix. Didn't do terribly last time but we still fell short of playoffs never mind qualification.

Strachan is yesterday’s man and failed even then.

Out of the Scottish names the only one I’d be interested in is Alex Neil. Otherwise, find someone from abroad.

I thought Strachan was doing a decent job with the talent he had at that time. Don't think he would be suitable now though

Armstrong losing possession was regrettable. There was though more to it than that. The subsequent high ball into the middle I thought should have been an easy take for the keeper. Instead he ballwatched, leaving Kane with a simple finish.

Gordon was also at culpable at the Oxlade-Chamberlain goal. He looked chocolate wristed to me.

Gordon imho is the best Scots GK of the 5 who get debated as the best in living memory. Like all of us though, he isn't perfect.
