Might as well open up a discussion on this. Who do you (realistically) want? Who don't you want?

Struggling to think at the minute so long as Scot Gemmill is nowhere near being in charge.

I can actually see a temporary appointment being made.

Names already being bandied about

David Moyes

Ange Postecoglu

Stephen Naysmith

Jasper Hjulmand

Kieran McKenna

It doesn’t cost anything to ask anyone

It’s worth sounding out Ange Postecoglou and asking the question. The worst that can happen is he says no

Maybe Roberto Martinez might be interested when his contracts up in the next few weeks. His family might fancy a couple of years back home

Robbie Keane wildcard? He’s been successful at each of his last 2 clubs

It’s time to look abroad. There isn’t a Scottish manager out there who is worthy of the gig

There’s 3 months until the next game

If they can’t find a suitable permanent replacement in that timeframe then even more serious questions need to be asked of those in charge of the SFA

I've already bandied Willy Sagnol, if you don't mind!

But Kieran McKenna sounds like an interesting one.

Can’t imagine that we could tempt anyone that has a possibility of being an EPL manager/current EPL manager. The money they are on is insane. Rules out Moyes unless he’s sacked. Ange and McKenna will get a much higher paid role elsewhere.

More likely Alex Neill, Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney, Darren Fletcher, Naismith, possibly even McCann or Ferguson?! No idea which foreign coach would be up for it.

McGlynn probably deserves it but isn’t a big enough name.

Cathro probably the strongest coach on paper given what he’s done in Portugal but he’s got no chance.

What about Slaven Bilic? Was it rumoured he might once have been interested in the Scotland job?

"He led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2008 European Championship... He was praised for his long-standing service to the national side and credited with successfully overseeing the introduction of a series of young players from the under-21 squad to the senior side."

As for Ange, do we know his attitude to international management? Would he want the Australia job, if not now, in the future? Where would managing Scotland fit into that?

Given how Everton ended last season Moyes could easily be available in September if he gets off to a bad start. He wouldn't be my choice personally as he looks like a continuity candidate.

McKenna is a young manager and will surely have his sights on something paying more and the day to day involvement that comes with a club job.

I think Vogts was so long ago that we shouldn't be averse to a foreign appointment anymore. Scandinavian coaches tend to be paid less and could be within our budget .Most speak English fluently too and their style of play is more akin to ours as opposed to Spanish or Portuguese teams. We need someone who can hit the ground running, has a track record of overachieving with a national team and who has a style of play suited to our players and their limitations.

His last season at West Ham was a disaster. Team was soft as shit and was getting thumped regularly. His initial success at West Ham was mostly down to Payet who carried that team.

Can't edit my post above but I'd be sounding out Kasper Hjulmand. His Denmark side were excellent and following Alonso at Leverkusen was always going to be tough  He's currently out of work too

Being a failure at West Ham doesn't mean you couldn't be a successful international manager. If he was a successful EPL manager he would be out of our league. All candidates will have limitations. But arguably he could fit your own criterion "has a track record of overachieving with a national team and who has a style of play suited to our players and their limitations."? But maybe he's been away from successful management too long.

Each to their own buy he wouldn't be my pick. I used to follow West Ham quite closely and the players gave up after Payet left. No fight and training was meant to be a joke. Mark Noble said many times that Moyes brought back much needed structure and professionalism after succeeding him. I suspect his spell at Watford has put off clubs from giving him another chance.

Hjulmand would be my choice if he's interested.

Steven Naismith & Scott Brown was one I thought of.

Not without flaws, or risk but maybe time to go with a 'younger' Manager(s) ?

I quite like the ‘passionate well respected younger former Scotland player’ as long as there is well thought out No2 and backroom staff.

There has been a lot of criticism that our team don't look properly coached sl I don't know if anyone from Clarke's team should be promoted.

Fine, I am not meaning to be a cheerleader for one candidate, but I think we need to be clear about what are the criteria.

If having a decent international track record is important, then that probably brings in a non-Scottish manager, and probably someone not recently wildly successful, for example. Bilic fits that, but who else?

If we want someone with a proven winning mentality via winning trophies then we'd be looking at a different set of people, maybe from Scotland or other modest sized countries/leagues. Unfortunately there are not so many trophy winners in Scotland - Steven Robinson? Neil Lennon? (I am meaning if we insist Clarke was a bad choice as he didn't win anything at Kilmarnock, then it forces us to look at who did...)

A third kind of person would be someone relatively untested but who could somehow do the job, which could bring in the likes of Naismith though personally I'd think to try others first. Or resurrecting a manager's career who hasn't recently cut it in league management but if they somehow would fit the Scotland mould. (Lambert? - who were maybe beyond our reach when Clarke appointed but could be back into play now?) (OK those may not be best examples but maybe someone can think of better examples)

That’s just a cliche that fans throw around, when they want a particular manager sacked.

See also, ‘No Plan B’, ‘Taken the team as far as they can take them’, etc.

Rino Gattuso?

Or some other respected Italian coach who has seen the positive impact of McTominay, Ferguson, Hickey, Miller, Gilmour ( less so) and Adams into Italian football and might think " I would like to coach these Scottish players"

Didn't De Zerbi say something similar when he signed Robertson for Spurs.

The person would have to be out of work as the SFA will not pay a release clause and be willing to take a pay cut.

The SFA really need to look outside the box here. I can imagine Naismith having first nibs ( Please no)

Another alternative is to go down the Welsh route and employ someone with good coaching credentials but no managerial experience. A sort of Giggs or Bellamy who played with distinction for their country.

Step forward Darren Fletcher?

I don't think so at all. Look ar Ghana against England. They were well organised and stopped England creating much. I haven't seen that level of organisation from Scotland in years. We can't even sort out our press or having the right distance between defence and midfield
