Bobby Russell's Lovechild Posted June 25 Posted June 25 It's 2129. It's the bi-monthly World Cup finals, where every country now qualifies. Scotland are sporting a new Battenburg design and Steve Clarke is sending Grant Hanley out, against reigning champions, Dominican Republic, for his 4322nd cap, in the hope that we'll get out the group stages for the first time ever! JECK Posted June 26 Posted June 26 Is grim that’s all I can say. Without a new manager this nations league till the end of the year I’m struggling with. Need someone to inspire hope. As much as I like the pantomime that is Scottish football I don’t have a club and just hope and wait around for potential Scottish superstar to breakthrough somewhere to enhance the team. I don’t see any potential manager on the horizon to take us forward. Moyes would be the obvious choice but I still think he enjoys the EPL too much and wouldn't take it. Only plus side is euro 2028 - a real chance to make some history with guaranteed hampden matches for us - I wouldn’t trust Clarke at all with this Quote
ger intae them Posted June 26 Posted June 26 Hilarious how folk fucked off with Clarke quote moyes as an option….. both pretty much the same age and both with huge rep for unadventurous football……we need a much bigger change than that! Quote

More chance of qualifying with Clarke than with most other options. That's why he was given a four year deal. I'd like to see him get us through the nations league and qualification and then resign and give someone else a chance in the finals. Quote

bigfingers Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Get John Mcglynn in! Plays a far better brand of football than Clarke does. Quote

If he does well there's a song ready and waiting: We've got McGlynn, super John McGlynn I just don't think you understand He's mates with Daniel Farke, he's better than Steve Clarke We've got super John McGlynn Quote

Yeah I’m not shouting for Moyes at all it’s just he’s the only Scottish manager of any pedigree around at the minute and the obvious choice of media etc. Good Scottish managers seems to have fallen off a cliff also. McGlynn is a no bad shout btw, certainly has a playing style. In a fantasy world I’d love if Klopp took it for 2 years - see what all these so called world class managers are like with not so elite players at their disposal. Quote
BryanBlessed Posted June 27 Posted June 27 The team has peaked. Look at the ages of some of our top players Robertson 32 and been making costly errors. McGinn 32 in a few months McTominay 30 at the end of the year Tierney just turned 29 but started young. All our strikers are 30ish. Even our centre backs are all over 30 or nearly 30 (though they can usually go on for longer). We'll have a decent core group of Ferguson/Gilmour/BGD for a few years time come but we're going to be lucky to qualify for anything post euro 2028 Quote

Don't let a good crisis go to waste. Quote

BryanBlessed Posted June 27 Posted June 27 1 hour ago, ceudmilefailte said: All true. Guess I’m delusional thinking we are still a top sixteen team in Europe let alone twenty four I think every Scotland fan overestimates the abilities of our players. I don't think we've been any good for a couple of years and qualifying for the WC just papered over the cracks. We're in a strange kind of limbo where we're not good enough to have a go at the top teams but we, as fans (myself included) demand it. Ghana knew they were playing a better team so they sat in against England. We probably approach the Morocco game the way we should have approached the Brazil game and vice versa. The sad thing is that I think we could have got a draw against Brazil if we'd adopted Clarke-like negative tactics. Quote
biffer Posted June 27 Posted June 27 It's pretty clear to me that Clarke sees the current team and recognises that he's got to build a new team for the next world cup hence the four year contract act. Euro 2028 we have to be hopeful if the qualifying is as reported (two automatic places to the host countries plus we all play the qualifiers, so realistically we need to do better than Wales or the Republic to qualify). Of the current squad, I think by 2028 well have passed on Robertson, Hanley, McLean, Christie, Dykes, Adams, and by the next World Cup, although I reckon McTominay will still be going at 33 with little to no change compared to now, but McGinn, Shankland will be gone and there's a few others that are touch and go. But many replacements are already blooded: by 2034 the squad will likely include defenders Doig, Hickey, Ralston, Patterson, Mckenna and potentially still Henry, Souttar Tierney (although I doubt the last one) the midfield will consist of Gilmour, Fergus on, McTominay, Fletcher, Gannon-Doak, Curtis, Miller, Barron, and up front Conway, Bowie, Hirst, Wilson. Others will come in to the mix too, preferably some 17 year old goalscoring prodigy. Pretty sure Clark views this as a project. Quote
DoonTheSlope Posted June 28 Posted June 28 There’s a lot of talk about the SFA being tired and needing change and what not. The SFA isn’t one individual person or individual governing body. The SFA is all of its member clubs. If you want change within the SFA then lobby your clubs to do so Quote
biffer Posted June 28 Posted June 28 If you had, three years from now Gunn Hickey, Mckenna, Hendry, Doig Ferguson, Gilmour Gannon-Doak, McTominay, Curtis Ure I think that is a good side. Quote

Almost the same as now, especially if you put Tierney in for doig. It's a decent side but our centre backs are still weak and we dont know if Ure will develop into a decent striker and if he would suit the lone striker role. We also need a stronger squad as our first team players are often injured. I hope that our future manager plays Tierney over Robertson. Edited June 28 by mccaughey85 Quote

biffer Posted June 28 Posted June 28 Also, Robbo needs to play club football. Be interesting to see how his form is at Spurs. Might have a resurgence. Or he might be done. On spurs record I'm worried for his soul tbh. Quote

Looking forward to seeing a manager picking players on current form rather than what they’ve done 1-2 years ago. Quote
