It was a weird match. Enjoyable but weird. Sort of reminded me of a schoolboy international. The way it went if you are English could confuse the problems of the other night. No doubt people will think those that played last night should have been in the side V Argentina but I would not read anything into it.

Yes and can you imagine the uproar if McGinn unfurled an Independence for Scotland banner after the Haiti win. I guarantee he would have got disciplined for it from FIFA and the Westminster government would have been apoplectic.

Last night was probably the most open  game since the last Soccer Aid Match. Just surprised Engerland didn't bring on Bradley Walsh and Ed Sheeran for the last 5 minutes

The whole thing is a bit of a mess. FIFA are in danger of being inconsistent over its own rules. The White House saying the Argentinians are welcome to have freedom of speech is muddying the waters and itself seems like a political intervention, rather than just saying it would expect FIFA to apply its own rules. I wonder what they would say if there were anti US or anti Trump banners in a stadium or on the pitch?

I see Downing Street also weighing in, saying "The World Cup may not be ours..." as if the UK could ever have won the World Cup. 

For me, the desperation by some to get Scots to support England or go against Argentina because of the Falklands, if anything makes me more likely to support Argentina.

But this is a new game, we have moved on from England, I'll probably end up favouring the team who plays better on the day.

Maybe on reflection it'd be good to see Spain battering Argentina else we'll be hearing how England were 5 minutes from World Cup glory forever more.

If they had any clout about them at all Downing Street would have said “The World Cup may not be ours… but the Falklands are”

Not sure the accuracy of it though. Was East Germany a top 10 nation in 1982?

On ELO, they were 9th and we were 15th when we played them. (12th & 13th respectively after we beat them.)

Assuming they're using Elo for these rankings, East Germany were ninth when we beat them: https://www.international-football.net/elo-ratings-table?year=1982&month=10&day=12&confed=FIFA&prev-year=&prev-month=07&prev-day=19 

It seems to switch to the FIFA rankings when that starts, as the United States were 15th in Elo when England beat them in 2005 and Egypt were 14th in 2010.

I think there would be in the sense that it's against the rules but I don't think they would be offended by it in itself. 

I think sport and politics should be largely separate.

Never really got into this one and felt more like a rugby World Cup in the sense that it took at least a month before meaningful games were happening.  Odd decent game but loads of absolute shit too.  Fell asleep through a lot of games and didn’t even bother with highlights for a chunk of the group games.  
 

Semi final Spain v France felt more like a Nations League game and the final was up there as bad as 90 or 2010.
