scotlad Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Portugal drawing 1-1 with DR Congo there. On paper, Portugal should be contenders for the trophy, but unfortunately they've hindered themselves by employing an oaf for a manager and retaining the services of an aging, undroppable captain with an ego the size of an elephant. StirlingEgg Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Was hoping that was another stutter penalty run up lesson but unfortunately England get another go 🙄 Quote

I'm close to having the sound off. Don't get me started on the Kane chugfest. Takes a shocker of a penalty but they start talking about him having the courage to take it again like he deserved a VC. scotlad Posted June 17 Posted June 17 I've just switched on but England are absolutely hammering Croatia here! 😳 Quote

Bloody hell I was dying for Croatia to get the ball out of the box there...keeper did well. Quote

I wouldn't have expected them to be beaten so easily, but they looked lethargic. I haven't paid much attention to England since the last Euros but tonight they seemed more direct compared to Southgate's tippy-tappy, slightly ponderous style. I had a suspicion that their defence was the weakest part of their team though and they do look slightly vulnerable there. Quote

Unfortunately they have always had the ability to score goals but look pretty dodgy at the back.If somebody like Mbappe ,Messi or Haaland really hit form against them they will certainly lose goals. That's probably true. Norway look suspect at the back too though, I'm not sure how far they can go. Not quite as suspect as when we scored five against them over two games, but still a bit dodgy! Yes.Thought France looked pretty good second half against Senegal but they also weren't great in defence.Although with their attacking strength it might not matter too much. Quote
romanticscot Posted June 18 Posted June 18 Last minute goal getting Ghana the winner over Panama. It is favorable for 3rd and 4th teams to draw against one another and lose against the teams who will end 1st and 2nd. This is going on the presumption we dont pick up any more points, which if we do then happy days. Quote
vanderark14 Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 England's defence is weak IMO and their full backs pass the ball to the opposition a lot. if a 2nd tier team like Croatia can open them up, a Top tier side like France, Argentina or Spain will beat them, maybe even Germany if they defend like that again. In fairness to them in the second half they played at a tempo that suited them. The issue they’ll have is they won’t be able to play at a Premier League pace in an open stadium. No standout teams other than France who’ll probably end up beating themselves so can see England going deep. Quote
Scots_Wha_Hae Posted June 18 Posted June 18 I think that Croatia team were the perfect stylistic matchup for England. Croatia were all about slow and measured central buildup to move their whole team up the middle of the pitch and lots of little deft but risky touches to create space. On occasion they tried to overload on the wing but more often than not brought it back inside to build centrally as they lacked the pace to be effective out wide. England had the power and speed to force them off the ball often either through pressure or strength in the tackle and then were able to break quickly down the wings and create loads of chances. I thought England were tactically excellent to be honest and I think they will continue to be so against stylistically similar teams like Spain and Netherlands (oddly, as its not their traditional style). It will be interesting to see if they can do the same against a team that can match their power, speed and strength like France and Portugal, I suspect not. England will go far in the tournament, I agree with others though that while their attack looks one of the best in the competition their defence may struggle against elite teams. Quote

I think England were expected to more or less walk their group so the score didn’t really surprise me. Quote

Be good for a British team to win it again. Quote
