It's all part of the gentrification of the sport that used to be the weekend pastime of the working man. It used to be a means of escape from the rigours of working life. Not any more. It's been taken over by the wealthy.

Having witnessed the scenes in May at the Trongate close at hand, football certainly hasn't been completely gentrified or taken from the working class. 

The big international competitions go beyond that, the domestic tribalism isn't there, it becomes a celebration with different cultures and countries. I'm all for that, and have fully embraced it on many occasions travelling with country and club.

I was lucky enough to get to all 3 group games. Had a great time but this need to anointe ourselves the best fans in the world is a bit cringe worthy.

One thing I noticed with social media photos but never gave it a thought until someone else I spoke to mentioned it was how many guys ended up in the SSC section with their wives who don’t usually attend games with them

Absolutely sickening but 100% correct.The day the middle classes and all that brings with it got into football was a sad day indeed.Used to look down on the "little oiks" that followed football but since ridiculous amounts of money got involved and it became a way of showing off the amount of money you can afford for a season ticket etc you get the likes of Stephen Fry saying what a big fan of football he is. That's the funniest thing he has said in years right enough.Obviously this is mainly at the top tier of football with the tourist supporters and all that shit but the World Cup is obviously top tier and watching the games it was quite obvious that large sections of people at the games were more interested in taking selfies and not even watching the game.In fact there were quite a few times when teams had lost goals and the camera showed their fans and as soon as they realised they were on tv they started laughing and waving like idiots.iThey aren't football fans just fans of being at big glamorous events.Gentrication is  the perfect word to sum it up.

I never understand the 'laughing and waving like idiots' routine. An opportunity lost to show defiance and support.

If you attempted what you suggest at Hampden or the Hydro what do you think would be the outcome?

What kind of example would parents send to the growing cohort of school age fans that attend away games if that behaviour was accepted as the norm?

Why should common sense and basically decent behaviour be parked just because we are in another country?
