Yes the World Cup is, first and foremost, a football competition but it is like life. You strive to get the best you can put of it in whatever way you can. If Scots can take solace in the way they are regarded as visitors to the States then that's the something to take. Far better than having being arrested or something for obnoxious or aggressive behaviour post-match. Hardly a memory worth holding on to or being proud about or something to tell the next generation relation about in 20 years' time.

i mentioned no causal relationship between 1. Fan behaviour  and 2. Team performance.

obviously they are two independent variables and I merely mentioned that if I had the choice of one or the otherwhich was the original question posed (and if neither could be true at thr same time) I would rather have a good team like England do.  Cleary ideally you would have both.

Conducting yourself in an orderly and admirable manner in someone else's country is not accepting being pish. Not at all. There are many who are upset about results/performances but far better to be courteous than arseholes like say 1977 when Wembley got trashed.

Gerry Mcnee wrote an article on this about 25 years ago where he made the reference to “kilted clowns”…. It upset a few in the tartan army but it resonated with me.

I preferred when there was an edge to our support, that doesn’t mean disorder.  Last time I felt it was in the Holte End in Euro 96.  

Since then we have become family friendly, and this has also coincided with a lowering of expectations and acceptance of being “happy to be there” and getting pumped.

I must admit, he does like to court a bit of controversy.  Picked his best ever Scotland 11 and didn’t pick Dalglish.  Had Jordan and law up front and davie Cooper on the wing with Bertie Auld and Dave McKay in midfield!
