My initial thought when learning Gilmour was out was Fletcher as his replacement. He looked very composed when he came on and, as others have stated, his style of play does appear to best compensate for what we're losing with Gilmour being out.

Another thing he has is that big club experience, which the others don't really have (with the exception of Barron who has had to handle the challenging demands of being a Rangers player). Being at a club like Manchester United, with the expectation and good players around him like Fernandes, gives him an edge. I think that helps when being able to manage expectations at international level, especially at a World Cup.

That said, his call up is a bit of a kick in the teeth to the other guys who have been part of senior squads during qualifying. So that is something Clarke will have to manage beyond this World Cup. What he can't be accussed of is taking the easy option and I'd give credit to Flether for actually taking his chance yesterday and giving the manager a decision to make. Of course, if we give him a cap during one of the games, it also stops any possibility of him potentially deciding to play for England! And as someone else has indicated, maybe get his brother back into the Scotland camp!

It's a risk in terms of the more established squad players but it can be turned on its head for them to up their game in terms of forcing their way into future squads. And I suspect that had any been called up, they like Fletcher, won't be earmarked to start games (being limited to potential sub appearances).

I agree with most of this but some could argue that Clarke has taken the easy option, logistically at least. As someone already mentioned, Fletcher was going to the USA anyway and the plane leaves today. I'm sure it's not the case and I am actually ok with the decision, every world cup squad needs a 'wild card' imo!

Normally you need 3 x competitive games to tie you to a nation but it’s only 1 game when it’s at a major tournament.

Fletcher coming on for a few minutes ties him to Scotland indefinitely and is a far more important statement than Miller joining the squad.

It’s harsh on Miller but could play a part in Jack Fletcher switching allegiance and that could be a massive coup if it happens.

Three teenagers in the squad. Clarke can't be accused of not promoting youngsters.

Three? Curtis and Fletcher, who have I forgotten?!

This thread is pretty wild. I for one am pretty pleased if a potentially elite (I.e top 5 league) midfielder has suddenly appeared as an oven-ready international. Miller looks to be a ready made international too, Gilmour is already there. When did we last have 3 elite level CMs at the same time (neither McTominay nor McGinn are really CMs) and with 5+ years ahead of them as a group? We also appear to have two international quality wingers who are both under 21. It’s incredibly positive and here we have three pages with a high number of moaning posts!

Incidentally, did Darren not make his Scotland debut with zero EPL minutes and only a couple of games in the champs league qualifiers (which may have been dead rubbers, I can’t remember) under his belt?

Said it before but our history of producing high quality functional centre mids , verging on elite/world class is ridiculous going back to the 90s. If we could produce just one or Two elite level forwards who could change a game in a heartbeat we’d be going deep right into tournaments

Maybe folk ard including James Wilson? Not in the official 26 man World Cup squad but is listed in the Scotland squad in general and is going to the World Cup 🤔

It's always the same people moaning too. I've stopped replying and put a couple of them on ignore. Id rather enjoy the world cup and this forum with less negativity and moaning

I thinks it great we have a young players like Curtis and Fletcher going to the WC

The mods should remove the Harvey Barnes thread from TA specific. He is not a Scotland player. End of.

Why? We will be shamelessly begging him for the euros in a couple of years time.

Agreed. He has even come out and stated his dream is to play for England.

Hopefully there will be in influx of new people coming to the site for world cup reasons, and not be put off by the moaning, but can join in too. 😉

Why, what? Why is he not a Scotland player?

Or why should we have a whole thread about a player who is not a Scotland player?

Well I don't mind there being a thread, if people want to discuss him, but it should not be in TA specific.

It is a bit embarrassing that, until yesterday, the only thread in TA specific about a named player was about a player who doesn't play for Scotland and doesn't want to. I'd rather hear about Fletcher v Miller, etc.

Tyler Fletcher wasn’t a Scotland player either until yesterday

And had only played 1 minute of senior football until a week ago.  A baffling decision from Clarke

It’s been quite a day on here. In my view, for Clarke not to pick some very good players and go with Fletcher we must have one hell of a player on our hands. There is no other reason to pick him. This for me is the very positive bigger picture.

It's not just the tamb, an interview with the Scotland manager on the way to a world cup and there are fans attacking his personality in the comments.

I don't think anyone has seen him enough to know for certain, but if he is our next Gannon-Doak level prodigy, then his lack of playing time is almost irrelevant.

I'm super happy Fletcher has been picked but I'd also have loved Bowie and Miller to be in the squad. There was room for all 3.

Not sure Ralston was necessary, as he is essentially just a back up to the back up. And Hirst played himself into the squad with a decent showing in the last friendlies, albeit he didn't score, but I'm not convinced he will be in the squads long term.

And he based this on a couple of training sessions and 45 mins against ten men Curacao?  We may as well hope for the best but it is a joke decision

I’d be interested to know based on what rationale Clarke thinks this based on 2 senior sub appearances at club level and 45 minutes against a team ranked 83rd in the world

I am staggered that we are taking part in our first World Cup in 28 years. There is more negative and trash talking on here than I read even in the Berti Vogts days. Bewildering.

It's strange. I don't think its just in here though. Ppl on social media seem to be quite negative as well.

Maybe ppl are expecting us to do our usual at a major tournament and fail miserably.
