Probably more on hotels, noticed from what we paid when first booking back in Jan we could have got digs for £1k ish in total cheaper today for the group of 6 of us for 8 nights. So around £170 each.

Empty rooms and Fifa cancellations - US hotels fear World Cup washout

Feel so bad for the fans like yourself who are getting fleeced but get it right up all these greedy barsteward businesses that are now seeing their predicted profits slump.

The fact they have the brass neck to directly blame FIFA (who I have absolutely no love for btw) and completely ignore the system that artificially inflates prices to completely unaffordable levels for everyday fans is risible.

If this World Cup had been the affordable tournament the US had promised it would be I'd be going regardless of the fact I'd struggle to get a match ticket through the SSC.

It's going to be some laugh watching a World Cup with the real possibility of more than half empty stadiums unless you're an Argentina, France Germany or Brazil.

Just cancelled our hotel in South Beach and moved to another hotel over the Brazil game. Saved £75 per person over the two nights.

Our other digs in Miami is still competitively priced so hanging on to that one.

I cancelled my hotel that was in Winthrop and got an Airbnb apartment  at Boston common for the same price worth checking if you have free cancellation and rebooking somewhere else 👍

It looks as though the only ones that never played the greed card are the airlines - externally anyway

The prices for cross atlantic travel are not far off what you would expect to be paying in a normal summer especially if you booked when the draw was made

However the hoteliers bought into the FIFA greed before the draw and ramped up their prices to the extent that you were expected to triple 5 star prices for something not even approaching 2 star

And then there are the scalpers - i hope they are left fucking stranded with thousands of tickets and are out of pocket that much it makes them insolvent

And they wonder why not as many are coming as Infantino promised

Maybe they werent interested in International fans and just expected normal Americans to pay those ticket prices and hotel rates

They saw right through it as well

The latest price shock I've had to absorb is reading the small-print of my booking details that have recently come through the post - I find out that I'm going to be charged an additional £964.70 Boston City Tax on arrival for a nine night stay.  I also have a Miami resort fee of £157.10 and a Mandatory tax of £21.99 to pay on arrival.  I don't know if these prices are the norm or whether they've also been increased substantially during the World Cup window.  I phoned my Travel Agent and told them I thought it was wrong that they hadn't thought to mention these additional prices when I agreed to the booking.  But they know full-well they've got us by the short and curly's, so we don't have any option than to stump up these fees.

Were the taxes not included in the original bill ?

When you reserve your hotel online and pay for it, the taxes will be included. There may also be "resort fees" or "destination fees", those will also be listed when you make your booking.

It's normal. City taxes seem to be fairly standard in most of the major cities these days. You should make sure if your booking includes them or not before booking.

Depends where and how you book it. After some research we decided to stay in the Holiday Inn Express in Boston. Looked at it on Booking.com and Expedia and the prices were pretty similar (within £100 or so of each other across a 4 person booking). I have an account with IHG so checked my member rate there and it was about £200 cheaper so we were about to just book it there when I read the small print. The price quoted by Booking.com and Expedia both included all City Taxes up front. The IHG price didn't. It was about £200 more expensive to book direct when the City Taxes were included. Needless to say booked it through one of the others.

My hotel was originally £500 a night but I managed to get one in a much better location (with a 90 Booking com rating) for £250 a night. This is cheaper than their non World Cup rate.

The only things I were ripped off for were the match ticket and train.
