Toepoke Posted April 30 Posted April 30 There's a link to Willie Morgan talking about 1974 too. Quote
JECK Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Read before in here that McQueen was a big miss for 78. Again as he’ alluded to our tournament history is just full of what if moments and the tightest of margins always not going our way. We had enough chances v Peru to win that game and the Iran game from what I’ve seen and the fact that side could beat Holland aswell shows it could have been a totally opposite media narrative to what was subjected on the country post 78. The trouble of course the we somehow managed to repeat being on the wrong side of luck and margins again 3 times in a row in 82, 86 and 90 (take out the 4-1 Brazil and west Germany 86 defeat as we were well beaten in those)to compound things forever it seems like, with the small moments just not going our way. I thought McQueen was a massive miss best of his generation IMO. Quote
Ally Bongo Posted May 1 Author Posted May 1 Danny McGrain who was at his peak in 78 also missed the tournament through injury Quote
Burj_Alba Posted May 2 Posted May 2 With the midfield and forward options we had, a few missing defenders should not have prevented us reaching the last eight. Andy Gray and Derek Johnstone left at home and Joe Harper played against Iran. Afraid Rioch and Masson had passed their peak and Souness and Gemmill should have been in earlier. Interesting with the loyalty V form debate on another thread. Exactly the same in 1978 and unfortunately Ally got it wrong. Badly wrong! Quote

Derek Johnstone went to Argentina and was an unused sub The whole of Hampden cheering for him to come on when we were losing 1-0 to England prior to the tournament probably didn't help Masson had reached his peak the year before - something that we only learned after the Peru game Rioch was still alright and played against Holland in the final game Edited May 2 by Ally Bongo Quote

Don't think Rioch played for Scotland again and IMO was already in decline in both club and country by the finals. Think Johnstone and Jordan up front in the second game would have scared the Iranians into submission. Quote
