Andy Robertson.... - TA specific - Tartan Army Message Board Jump to content

Liverpool are a ruthless multi-billion pound football business and brand owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), main share owner John W. Henry.  They buy, hold and sell assets (called players) funded by club income.

They have a transfer policy based on maximising value of their player assets.  They also cover each position with two established international level players.  Players lose value above 31-32 as their sell-on opportunities are less.  Varies with position (CB and GK decline later).  It is just business with Andy. He's known for his energy and is now competing with Kerkez, almost a decade younger. That game isn't winnable by Andy long term.

Liverpool's Transfer Strategy: Balancing Youth and Experience

Quote

Liverpool’s financial strategy hinges on maintaining equilibrium between expenditure and income. The club is careful not to overextend, preferring strategic investments backed by revenue from player sales, commercial ventures and performance bonuses. Rather than chasing marquee signings with inflated fees, LFC pursue value acquisitions.

Robertson will be fine at a lower EPL club where he can be seen as a leader and his place less challenged.

That's a stupid policy in terms of trying to compete at the top level. Man utd were happy to keep many a player like scholes, Giggs, Ferdinand on until they retired.

Robertson has loads of experience and should be kept around as guide and mentor to the younger players as well as playing 30 plus games a season. If he's managed right then they should get another 2/3 seasons out of him as long as they rotate him with another top class left back.

It's what happens when money men start dealing with on the pitch matters.  Get rid of depreciating assets.

Robertson is vulnerable because he is a high intensity player and these players pass their peak earlier

There is also a new dynamic of the Saudi league, and to a lesser extend the US MLS, to extend players careers a couple of years.  It means there is a new market to sell post-peak players into. So Liverpool can look at age 30-32 to sell on players still in contract to Saudi and break even or perhaps make a profit.

Salah with his Egyptian heritage is clearly up form grabs between the rich Arab clubs  Saudi League can pay top dollar currently. Lower intensity, less competition, less pressure but plenty of money and a less physically punishing league.  Ideal for the autumn of a player's career.

So the Saudi league is less intense, less pressured and possibly more dosh.

The outcome of modern football financing is an optimum purchase of players at young 20s, like Kerkez, pair them up with a seasoned international like Robertson as their position rival and play both but in a manner that phases the younger one into more and more games over several years, and phases the old guard out.

Robertson has a couple of very good years ahead of him still, but the replacement process with Kerkez is quite advanced and its time for him to try another club rather than waste his talent/experience/composure warming the Liverpool bench.
