Would be good to see what they can do and maybe give Clarke an incentive to play them in the world cup games. Still not sure you learn anything from friendlies which means.IMO the nations league has been instrumental in us qualifying for the last three tournaments. More competitive games there have helped us get more competitive games at finals. Honestly trust Clarke to make the right call on Curtis and Stewart based on what he sees in training. Quote

Would anyone accept him back in if we suddenly had an injury crisis in midfield? Aside from the fact that he decided that he couldn’t be bothered playing for Scotland anymore, he should be nowhere near this squad based on this past season. I’d have taken Miller and probably also Irving ahead of him so it’d need to be a hell of an injury crisis… Quote
Caledonian Craig Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Tournaments are not played on stats I know but this squad is the most experienced (caps wise per player) we have ever sent to a major tournament. It also boasts the highest goals per player ration too of any of our squads to play at a major tournament. Perhaps worrying is the fact that in all the heat out there this is the oldest squad (average age per player) we have sent to a major tournament pipping our Euro 96 squad to that accolade. It also boasts being the squad with most major tournament experience we have sent to a major tournament. Quote
BookhouseBoys Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Pleased with the squad, to be honest, especially the inclusions of Curtis and Stewart. I’d have had Bowie in over Dykes or Hirst but it’s obvious why that hasn’t and won’t happen. Same thing for Welsh over Hanley. For all that we get frustrated by the squad consistency, it could easily be argued that it is one of the main reasons why we’ve qualified for 3 of the 4 past major tournaments. Clarke clearly believes that and so that’s how it’ll go. You also can’t really argue that the alternatives are so much better. I feel for Lennon Miller, but as has been said, he wouldn’t be in ahead of the current midfield - his time will come, though. Quote

Going to interesting to see the average age of the squad we send to the next euros as I can't see many retiring after this world cup apart from Gordon and maybe McLean. Quote
Diamond Scot Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Changed days when we have 3 regulars in Italys top flight and 1 in Germany who dont make a 26 man squad. Ralstons selection and Millers non selection are the only 2 that annoy me. Ralston is hopeless, and cant only play RB. McCrorie is at absolute worst on the same level and can play RB, RWB and holding mid if neccesary. Midfield is the hardest position in terms of distance covered and we have taken 8 players to cover 5 positons. Centre back rarely if ever require to be subbed barring injury. There is zero need to take as many as we have. Miller should have been in at the expense of a defender. Ralson or Hanley. Quote

Caledonian Craig Posted May 19 Posted May 19 My one criticism with the squad is that it is probably a defender too many. It would have been better to not select Ralston and have an extra striker in there. Either Bowie, Burke or McBurnie. Quote
Stockholm 1980 Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Totally underwhelmed. 7 players going who will never be in another Scotland squad after this World Cup and another 2 or 3 who will be but shouldn’t be. SFA Please don’t renew Clarke’s contract Quote

I am guessing Gordon is one but we actually need him in this squad as we struggle for decent goalkeepers. Hanley and McLean? Both have earned their squad place. Edited May 19 by mccaughey85 Quote

Yes but he has choosen to take 10 defenders and only 8 midfielders. 9 and 9 would have been a better split which could have meant Miller for Ralston. We have 4 defenders in the squad who are better at RB than Ralston. Quote
kumnio Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Well it’s a Stevie Clarke squad right enough. 3 right backs is just daft, 5 centre backs is too many, if we play 5 at the back Tierney has to play LCB, so we really don’t need 5 CBs. Need to hope that Doak is fit, otherwise there is no replacement for a similar player at all. Miller missing out seems very daft and unjust for him. 4 fairly slow immobile strikers plus Adams. Hirst, Dykes and Stewart offer the same from what I’ve seen of them, we really don’t need all three of them. Shankland is the only one that you’d back to finish a chance. Cant say that I’m surprised by the nonsense picks at all. Quote

Would have been a bit part squad player by now so he stepped aside and it was probably the right thing for him and the team. Quote

I think McGregor would have still started games alongside gilmour had he stuck around. Mctominay and Ferguson can play as attacking mids which mctominay mostly does anyways. Quote

I feel really sorry for especially Miller , Bowie and the injured Conway, as they would have benefited so much from this experience. Delighted Clarke picked Stewart, but let's see if he gives him enough minutes in the friendlies to make a genuine claim to start, perhaps alongside Shankland against Haiti. Quote

I don't have an issue with a 5th fullback (would prefer it not to be Ralston). A 5th centre back is an error imo. If Hanley pulls out I'd like to see Miller, Bowie or Mcburnie brought in. We will likely play one up front against Morrocco and Brazil. Realistically our choices for this role are Stewart, Dykes and Hirst. Another option wouldn't hurt imo. Quote

saintsparky Posted May 19 Posted May 19 France, Haiti and Brazil all announced squads today with 5 midfielders and 9 forwards. Would it not have shown a bit of positive intent, if we had included BGD, Curtis and possibly McGinn and Christie as Forwards. Then at least it might look like we plan to attack, instead of parking the bus for 3 games... Bit of positive psychology!! Quote
prideothenorth Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Bowie, McBurnie and Miller unlucky not to be in, but then if they had then the three missing out would have been classed as unlucky as well. I am all for picking in form players and glad at least Findlay has made the squad. We all knew it would be a safe squad and Clarke would keep faith. It's what we do from now on that matters and hope everyone keeps fit. Quote
