Hertsscot Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Thought it was worth opening up a thread. I enjoy this when it comes around. Didn't realise Lyndsey Vonn was still going strong at 41. Even less did I realise that she's competing having ruptured an ACL only two weeks back!
Orraloon Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Great win for Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat over Canada to go 6 wins out of 6. Hope they haven't peaked too early.

I was listening to BBC 5 Live and made the observation that for some people curling is a bit of a joke and doesn't get the respect it deserves. My wife felt I was being over sensitive to a perceived anti-Scotland sentiments but I disagreed. Someone like Luke Littler is a superstar, nominated for SPOTY etc. but the curling has every bit as much strategy, skill and athleticism yet isnt given the same credit

The commentator said she'd had a lot to put up with in her private life in the last year. All very sad what she's had to put up with: https://en.sportnews.bz/artikel/wintersport/langlauf/tausende-bilder-hunderte-anrufe-stalker-von-langlauf-star-verurteilt

StirlingEgg Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Watching the men's figure skating there; the American guy is totally Blades of Glory 😂

Shame for her as she's been a real star of that sport over the years. Stupidity or bravery, sometimes it's not easy to tell.

Modern elite curlers are athletes and very physically fit. Not as physically demanding as say tennis, rugby or even football, but the top players are extremely fit. Then we come to strategy where there is no comparison. In darts the strategy is about being able to count downwards fro 170 and knowing where all the numbers are on the board. Curling is a very strategic sport. It's not called "Chess on Ice" for no reason.

Hertsscot Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Disappointing to learn the IoC is currently axing the Parallel Giant Slalom event in the snowboarding. Really enjoyed watching this, can't understand why they'd want to get rid of it.
Hertsscot Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 Short Track Speed Skating relay is a bit of a bonkers event.

But unlike a 100m track relay those who are next to race aren't standing statically on a mark but are skating inside the current racers and getting up to speed so they can take over.
StirlingEgg Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Sorry to see Fear & Gibson not do so well there in the figure skating. Hope the big build up pressure didn't get to them in the end...no GB medals yet, 42 years since and Torvill & Dean being mentioned every 4 seconds...

Must be really hard to make a mistake early on, know you've blown your chances of a medal and then skate on. I enjoyed their routine and hopefully they're young enough to have another crack at it in 4 years time.
