Hertsscot Posted January 16 Posted January 16 (edited) I wasn't sure whether this belongs in the 'Is Donald Trump's campaign a spoof thread?' (Unfortunately no!) or in 'The News Thread'. So I've started a new thread which may or may not take off. Anyhow the latest attempt by the bullying sociopath. The BBC has reported him as saying: "I may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security," Trump said at the White House meeting on rural healthcare. Toepoke Posted January 16 Posted January 16 The USA are quite capable of defending Greenland without owning it.... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jan/07/brief-history-of-us-military-bases-in-greenland Quote

Most people know it's just a land grab. Quote
mccaughey85 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I wonder what our resident trump supporters have to say on this subject. Seems to go against their narrative of trump being a benevolent leader trying to bring peace to the galaxy. Quote

I know a lot of posters have him on mute, but i would like to hear @DoonTheSlope's take on the Greenland thing Quote
Hertsscot Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 It does seem completely inexcusable. As far as I understand the USA can increase security any time they wish and any attack on Greenland by Russia or China would be an attack on NATO, so all this talk of the USA needing it for security purposes is a pack of lies. It's not only the usual suspects on this board who have been quiet but, unless I've missed it, Farage etc have said anything? Quote
AlfieMoon Posted January 17 Posted January 17 There was a Danish politician on the news last week saying that the US military already have and can continue to have as much military presented as that want on Greenland. Apparently the US used to have 15,000 there and it’s now like a couple of hundred or something completely through choice of the US. Also said that if US enterprise want to do minerals business, etc. then they’re welcome to engage and work there. Quote
Ally Bongo Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Looks like a small number of French and German troops being sent to Greenland has had some effect with the Democrats calling for a de-escalation of the situation if not Herr Trump Quote
exile Posted January 17 Posted January 17 USA helped defend Europe for 80 years with bases all over the place, without having to own us, or our coal or oil. Quote

I think the mental gymnastics required to justify it are too difficult. It still would be fun to hear what he has to say on the subject. Quote

Ally Bongo Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Other topics not to be mentioned ; Demolishing part of The White House to build a new ballroom - which he will have to vacate in 3 years Renaming The Kennedy Centre as The Trump Kennedy Centre Threatening tariffs against countries that go against his Greenland plans General narcissism Quote
Ally Bongo Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Donald Trump announces plans to hit the UK, Denmark and other European countries with a 10% tariff on "all or any goods" exported to the US from 1 February In a post on Truth Social, the US president says these will remain in place until "such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland" Quote

Ally Bongo Posted January 17 Posted January 17 The EU should announce a no fly zone for US aircraft over EU air space from 1st Feb Quote
Hertsscot Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 Surely the vast majority of people in the UK are appalled by Trump's actions. We should all just boycott American products, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Starbucks, Costa, McDonalds, Apple etc. Cancel the Florida holiday, Disney subscription etc. I guess we'll be appalled - but not that much. mccaughey85 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Even trumps staunchest supporters must be questioning his decision making right now. Quote
