Guest Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Trump is now threatening the Mexican cartels with military action. You new know if it's just bluster with him but any such action would surely lead to the World Cup not even starting (or Infantino removing the matches from Mexico at least). Quote
Orraloon Posted January 9 Posted January 9 If Brazil withdraw then Venezuela are next in line to take their place. 😂 If they don't take up the invite then it's Peru. 😟 Quote

Never mind "no Scotland, no party" "No Brasil, no (serious) tournament" The modern world cup is the best of the best on a four year basis for the world's most treasured sport. It's where legends cement their legacy and the world stops to watch key games. Americans don't understand this. The world cup is not a play off for whichever football nations can be scraped together in patched up competition. People won't watch or even worse it will be the tournament everyone questions the fair outcome of. I hope this is what Infantino told Trump and was thinking in awarding that ridiculous FIFA peace prize - to stave off military activities until the tournament is over. But I doubt it, Infantino wants his pockets filled by the lucrative and expanding American market. Quote

AAAfather Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 DEFCON 3 Trump says US needs to 'own' Greenland to prevent Russia and China from taking it - BBC News Quote President Donald Trump says the US needs to "own" Greenland to prevent Russia and China from doing so. "Countries have to have ownership and you defend ownership, you don't defend leases and we'll have to defend Greenland," Trump told reporters on Friday. We will do it "the easy way" or "the hard way", Trump said Any military move on Greenland = European nations military response This is getting a little scary now. National conscription, not World Cup participation. UK will have no choice but to commit troops with Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland etc. to help our European neighbour. DEFCON 3 now. Quote

Maybe if the European countries came together and said they would boycott the world cup if trump keeps threatening Greenland then that might get him to back off. It would be a massive knock to trumps ego if the world cup was taken away from the USA and held somewhere else. Quote

Unlikely as i sincerely doubt Trump gives a fuck about football The monetary loss of losing the tournament is peanuts to the mineral resources of Greenland as well The World Cup will be the last thing on European Governments minds The first thing they will do is ban all flights from the US over European airspace However Denmark might act first and enact their committment to fire first and ask questions later if any military force tries to invade Greenland I think there would also be a military coup in the USA if it came to ordering US troops to open fire on European allies Quote
AAAfather Posted January 10 Author Posted January 10 Quote Unlikely as i sincerely doubt Trump gives a fuck about football Trump understands money making (business career), TV and showbusiness (Apprentice USA career) and politics (becoming US President twice). Football is attractive to him as its a bit of all three of these. Quote

Trumps an egomaniac and the idea that Europe could boycott the world cup and have it moved elsewhere would drive him nuts, especially if the USA was barred from it. Come to think of it I think it might cause him to double down rather than back off. Quote
AlfieMoon Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I’m with Ally on this. Trump doesn’t give a shit about the WC. The only thing he cares about is himself. If you challenge him with a boycott of the World Cup he’ll just double down. The whole situation is fucking depressing. The Venezuela situation feels like rinse and repeat of what the US do so that almost doesn’t shock me. However, just watching over all the ICE stuff the last couple of days and more so their responses to it has me truly appalled. Now his statements on Greenland is not just someone who is a maniac but is someone who has actually lost the plot. But it’s not just one man - look at how many lackeys he has surrounding him and the cult of followers. Quote

It's true that under NATO rules, attacking one is treated as attacking all but the USA is also part of NATO so it would fall apart. Trump would have to get past Congress as he doesn't have the right to go to war without their approval. If he does take Greenland, I don't expect any military response from other European nations. People overestimate how much solidarity there is. Quote

Going into capture a leader definitely breaches international law but is it a 'war' that involves invasion, occupation and annexation? Denmark may fight back but they will almost certainly be on their own. 33 minutes ago, Rich NATA said: Which would probably be a green light for Russia going for the Baltic states and China going for Taiwan. Russia has nothing like the military might of the USA. A combination of a few European nations could repel an attack. The whole of Europe wouldn't stand a chance against the USA. It's certainly not European nations preventing China taking Taiwan. Quote

Denmark have said no to that at the moment They will not be on their own It's one thing to send troops for political reasons. It's quite another to order them to engage US forces. Greenland is a semi-autonomous region of Denmark. It's not in the EU and is of little interest to the rest of Europe. That's not to say it would be acceptable for the US to take it. It already has US troops stationed there and they can basically come to an agreement to protect Greenland (like they do Iceland) while buying mineral rights. I have no idea why Trump is proposing just taking it. Quote

They have a strategic location that oversees baltic access, if push comes to shove. France, Germany, ourselves would all be forced to help them. Note Britain no longer has the navy to patrol its own borders properly. Denmark and France are necessary partners. Quote

Did NATO ever war-game the scenario when a NATO territory comes under attack... from a rogue US regime? Has the UK the guts to stand up to the US and fire a shot at them? What happens to US bases in UK if we are in a state of war with the US? And what about other countries around the world, if they were prepared to send troops to Kuwait or Afghanistan, would they come to Greenland's aid? Canada, Australia? And what happens when China decides to do something about Taiwan? Quote
bdgsct Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Greenland is a case of threatening the worst case scenario (for Greenland)so that the eventual reality doesn't seem as bad. Classic politics. Quote
AAAfather Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 (edited) I didn't realise Iran had qualified. I confused them with Iraq. They are in Belgium's group, group G. That's another source of boycott worry ahead. The problem with late withdrawal by any team is the third place qualifiers from groups. Lots of bickering about fairness if some new team called up that does well or spectacularly poorly to mess up the third place qualifiers with extreme goal differences.
