scotlad Posted December 25, 2025 Posted December 25, 2025 Only 72. It must be awful for his family; losing a family member is hard enough but at this time of year it must be even crueller. He played before I became a football fan, so I can't remember him playing first hand, but from the footage I've seen he was clearly a class act. Quote

Banjo Posted December 25, 2025 Posted December 25, 2025 For a player who scored a winner in a European Cup Final and assisted a winner in another still said his greatest goal was his penalty winner at Wembley against England in 1981.A brilliant player for Scotland and Forest.RIP Robbo Β Quote
thesaint Posted December 25, 2025 Posted December 25, 2025 Another great gone.Such a deceptive winger.Pure class. Quote

EddardStark Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 RIP. Part of an unbelievable Forest side. Brian Clough had him as his best player. A really tough but talented winger. Loved his country and put his winner against England above his goal Β in the EC Final in terms of most memorable goals.Β Quote
Burj_Alba Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 A truly magnificent player and probably the best left sided player in Scotland history. ( IMO better than Eddie Gray or Willie Johnston at their peak)Β RIP JR Quote
King Of Paisley Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Hailed from the same area of Uddingston as Jinky Johnstone. Brilliant crosser of a ball too, especially the one he pinged over for Trevor Francis in the 1979 European Cup final. RIP Robbo Β Β Quote

This documentary is still on the iPlayer... https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001zphl Β It's amazing that two of our best ever wingers had hardly any pace. They had so much skill that they could beat the defender over two yards with a wee flick, or a wee shimmy, and send over inch perfect crosses. Robertson had a wee advantage in that he was two footed (I think he might have actually preferred his right foot??? - not sure) but I would say that Cooper turned out to be the better player overall, especially once he added free kicks to his repertoire.Β Β Quote

Β Β I'm not sure that was down to RobertsonΒ Davie Cooper got his first two caps in 1979 and wasn't capped again for over 4 years - well after Robertson's International career was overΒ In fact John Greig resigned Willie Johnston in 1980 which suggests either Greig never fancied Cooper like Jock Wallace did or a period when Cooper couldn't be arsed - or a combination of bothΒ Cooper was reignited by the return of Jock Wallace in 1983Β I don't even think it's even close as to who was the better player when on formΒ That said Robertson had a 2-3 year period when he had Roy of the Rovers influence in big gamesΒ Quote
Hertsscot Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 I remember Martin O'Neill talking about Robertson. MO'N was on the right hand side of midfield and basically said that his job was to give it to the 'genius' who was on the other flankΒ Quote

My dad took me to Ibrox circa 1982 specifically to watch Cooper in a Rangers v Hibs reserve game, while he was frozen out of the first team (who were playing at Easter Road the same afternoon). Unsurprisingly Davie ran riot, but still wasn't recalled IIRC. Β Quote
Malcolm Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Β Forrest were my English team growing upβ¦. Β Predominantly because everyone else in my class supported Liverpool as their English team but also cause Archie Gemmil played for them, so after the World Cup that was my team. Β Β I remember being over the moon when my grandad took me to Thompsons sports shop in Corstorphine after he had a win at the bookies and bought me a Notts Forrest top. Ally Bongo Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Sadly Scottish Football had a multitude of players that were outstanding wingers which no longer existed after the 90s If you went to football games in the 70s and 80s i bet every fan can remember who they were as almost every club had themΒ That was who you paid money to go and see and felt an excitement when they got the ballΒ It must have been coached out of playersΒ Quote
