Most of those extra hundred are minnows and not really a threat to us qualifying for tournaments.

The big teams and most of the decent sides were around in 1978.

I can see both sides of the argument and I think both have valid points.

Theres definitely loads more decent sides around now than there was in 60s and 70s but the expansion of tournaments has made it easier to qualify, especially the euros.

I would say at least 80% of the simulations I have tried where we get 3 points we go through to the last 32. 

The simulator usually has us in third place as well and we usually get knocked out of the last 32 so I would say it's pretty realistic. 

We beat Haiti and avoid heavy defeats against Morocco and Brazil and its likely we go through.

It's conceivable ourselves, Morocco and Haiti could end up on 4 points, in which case 4 points won't even be enough for one of us, that would be a new sickening way for us to fall short!

I don't understand your logic there. Is it possible for the bottom three teams to get 4 points. If those three teams get 4 points then 2 are going through. One as the second placed team and the other as one of the best placed teams in third.

My point is the bottom team will be on 4 points but still won't qualify, that's all

Weirdly it happened the last time the world cup was in USA 1994, Group E finished with all 4 teams on 4 points, Norway missed out on goals scored!

You cannot judge football of 50 years ago with today. For one there were far, far fewer teams playing international football compared to today. Many teams not even in existence in '78 are now real forces such as Croatia and many teams came about after the break up of the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.

reasonable points.  Why not just make it top 1 or 2 sides in the section.  Say 24 from 48 go through then 8 groups of 3, winners in to quarters.  It group winners in to 4 groips of 3 then semi.

Not new. We were eliminated with 4 points in 1974 (2 points for a win) and also at Euro 96 (3 points for a win).

3rd it’s either Boston 29th June or New Jersey or Mexico City 30th June!

No matter which no easy way to sort out quickly, especially if we end up 3rd as the last group I games don’t finish until 2 days after our last game in Miami.
