exile Posted November 27 Posted November 27 The end of history? I don't think so. It's time for the history thread part 2. I'll fill in some history later but this is just to get it up and running again after... the old one seems to have been deleted. Quote
exile Posted November 27 Author Posted November 27 The first 'Scots' in America were probably Orcadian Vikings who sailed there with other Vikings to establish the colony of Vinland. So they'd be the first Scots in what we now call Canada, around the year 1000. So, new found land before Newfoundland, and nova Scotia before Nova Scotia. They had some nice things like grapes, and wine, hence the name which means Wine Land or the Land of Vines. Well, it must have sounded better than Iceland, or Greenland. Quote
Ally Bongo Posted November 27 Posted November 27 It was deleted after i reported a post by a newbie called Patterson It was along the lines of an oft used anti semitic trope for the origins of WW2 in that it was all the idea of the World banks and that Hitler had made a deal with the Zionists etc etc He then added a racist quote regarding a "white Europe" and attributed it to Hitler when it was actually the former PM of Rhodesia Ian Smith A charming individual Quote

I reported it too. Thankfully it's been taken down. (It's the first time I have reported anything, but it seemed appropriate given the traditional TAMB rules.) The same individual made a provocative quip on the "Who is coming over for World Cup" thread (that elicited the reaction to "go f---yourself")... the comment and thread are still there. Quote

Ally Bongo Posted November 28 Posted November 28 When i was banned all my posts went along with every thread i had started As the offender didnt start any of the threads i have no idea why they have gone if he has also been banned The Mods were previously able to delete posts and ban someone without all of their posts being removed They could also have deleted the offending post and suspended the user indefinitely Quote
exile Posted November 28 Author Posted November 28 (edited) Before their union, Scotland and England were on different landmasses. Scotland shared a continent with North America while England was part of Avalonia joined to Africa and South America. They were separated by the Iapetus Ocean, that was closed up when Scotland and England collided, to create the Southern Uplands. This was about 425 million years ago. Maybe pre-history rather than history, right enough. https://www.scottishgeologytrust.org/geology/scotlands-geology/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_orogeny Edited November 28 by exile Quote

Just can't beat a good orogeny. I think it was the BBC's Earth Story narrated by Aubrey Manning that got me into it. Either that or the book I had before it and the TV series took me over the edge. (Dunno where the fekkin' book's gone now. Aaaarg! 🤬) I'd be on a beach or a hillwalk and pick up a stone and see there was a reason for everything in the universe. How was it made? How did it get here? ...I'd no fekkin' idea. I didn't have step 1 - - - the chemistry to know the rock's structure 🤪 Quote

Chemistry, not so much. Quote

Chemistry, not so much. I know. Mental. Need the chemistry though to identify (and sometimes age) the crystals in the rock, and my kitchen blender and reading specs don't cut it. Otherwise your starting from layers of dead beasties and matching them up with identicals ones in the Apalachians or wherever. I wonder about the Atlantic. (Worry, not yet.) Ocean seabed rock is denser than continental crust. After 50-odd million years it's still growing (from the mid ocean ridge as you know), but some day (ok, some eon) its weight will start to drag it under either America or us and the winner(?) gets explosive volcanoes and an Andes size mountain range above the subduction zone ...again. Yes, geology is quite an amalgam of things, from ancient geography to biology (ancient animals) and chemistry (abstract crystals and so on). Not sure about those volcanos. Is it true though that Scotland is rising and England sinking? Quote

Yes, the statement is based on a geological process where the land is rising in Scotland and sinking in England, often described as a "see-saw" effect . This is due to the glacial isostatic adjustment, which is the slow rebound of the Earth's crust after the immense weight of ice from the last Ice Age melted. As Scotland's land rises, the more distant crust of southern England sinks Quote
exile Posted November 29 Author Posted November 29 Had a peek at this The Entire History of Scotland. It shows the various territories of Scotland coming together; it skims a bit over most of the history post Union and seems to end at 2014 (not 2025). I note how they always say things like 'The Caledonians were warlike' - well what do you expect if it's the view of someone trying to invade you? Quote

phart Posted November 29 Posted November 29 There's a planet Geo podcast that the geology students I know talk about a lot, way over my head. Quote
