Still Can't Take It In

Been on here, Facebook, BBC website etc and still struggling to comprehend last night actually happened. The last time I felt like this was the morning after Paris 2007 when I woke up in my hotel room in Gard du Nord scarcely believing we had done the French. I don't normally drink during the week but after finishing work I felt compelled to go to my local for a few liveners. All the talk was abou last night.

Just feels surreal. Watching the rerun of the national anthem and staring at the pots with Scotland amongst the great and good of world football again had me in tears. Not ashamed of it. This game really can rip you to bits 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Same here. I was up til 5:30am this morning watching clips, goals, fan reaction in pubs. About three hours sleep, dug walk then out to the pub for a few beers myself just watching and reading everything about last night.

Everything about yesterday was sensational and memorable 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Was so focused on just getting through the game and getting the must-win won, it was only really at the final whistle that it sunk in that we had actually qualified outright. Like all those weeks of working out play-off permutations, suddenly became unnecessary.

Also it's probably hard to convey how epic this game was to people of other countries (or who don't follow football) - not just a great result, but possibly the most epic game.

Was funny yesterday , the entire country seemed to be talking about the game.

I was getting texts from folk I hadn’t spoken to in ages , got a text from a random number that wasn’t in my contacts with a message saying ‘have you recovered yet’. Was my daughter’s mother in law in Tunisia. 

It was just great for everyone to feel so happy and passionate. 

My husband came home at night and said the same thing, absolutely anywhere he went folk were talking about the game. 
He fixes cars and went into a garage to help a pal. The mechanics were all in the kitchen at their break talking about the match and my husband mentioned he had been there. He then hears a wee voice shout ‘ did you see those goals ????’ 
It was someone having a shit in the toilet at the end of the room 😂

I've been getting loads of messages from folk who haven't been to Hampden for 10,20 years all saying they are definitely going and can I get them tickets. Then when I start explaining the logistics behind it they go kinda quiet. These are folk who can't even be bothered going to Hampden between World Cups. 😂 

Of the folk I actually go to games with, I'm guessing that only about 3 or 4 might go.

I left the SSC a while back and wouldn't attempt to get a ticket from anyone who is still in it that isn't going as the SFA will police it strongly i'd imagine 

I have friends in Seattle, Oklahoma, South Carolina and West Virginia so i'd imagine the one in Seattle would be the handiest to ask to try for tickets 

That said i'm trapped as a full time carer and the money required to go would be eye watering - not to mention not being 21 anymore 

I would probably go to Benidorm as the tournament will coincide with Royal Ascot 

Then again - i dont imagine many pubs will stay open for the early morning games unless England are playing 

Roll on the draw to have more of an idea

Epic is the word. 

The whole narrative of not having qualified for 28 years, and then to seal it at home, with the last kick of the game, with a shot from the halfway line by a player most folk in Scotland that don't really follow football (some do exist) wouldn't have heard of is Roy of the Rovers stuff. 

Credit to BBC Sport Scotland who have commentators on the telly and the radio that actually give a shit about Scotland. The tv commentary and even more so the radio commentary that goes along with the footage makes it even more re-watchable and shareable.

And also, I've seen plenty of comments from round the world appreciating the game for the beauty and passion of football. Even if some nations don't get the 28 year gap thing, all football fans must identify with the must-win situation, being pegged back twice and going into injury time still needing a winner, then getting it with a sublime strike and then an outrageous last kick of the ball. 

Hopefully the spectacle - from Flower of Scotland to final whistle - should help atone to some extent for the feeling we failed to turn up in 2024. Like, we've definitely earned our invitation to the party.

I have been to many great games and watched many classic matches on TV but nothing comes close to Tuesday night.

It is not just the fact we returned to the World Cup Finals after missing out for so long. It is the manner we did it and the unbelievable quality of the goals. Three of our goals will make it into many's top five Scotland goals of all-time. On top of that the match swung for us then against us and just when you thought: 'Here we go again'. We turned it around deep in stoppage time. The celebrations were something else and seeing Clarke who is seen as always dour with tears in his eyes and grinning and hugging his players was just brilliant.

Now that the dust has settled (somewhat) and I can look at it objectively... I still think it will go down as the best game of all time. It had every piece of drama you could put into a football match. 

1. Injury in the warm up (rare)

2. Overhead kick (rare)

3. Heart breaking injury to young player early in game

4. Controversial penalty (was it inside the box??)

5. Red card

6. Injury time winner

7. Injury time goal from half way line (rare)

I've probably missed some stuff, but all 7 of those things don't happen very often in a normal football match, nevermind them all happening in a game that qualified us for a world cup.

Absolutely.

The thing is the pure world class quality of the goals when the chips were down. I mean this is Scotland and we scored three worldies in the same match. If we had worn yellow tops you'd swear (watching purely the goals) it was Brazil playing. 

There is no way we have ever produced so many moments of world class quality in a match of such importance and it counting for something. And yes it includes Gemmill's goal and us beating Holland as invariably that resulted in nothing. Perhaps the moment that comes closest is the 3-2 win against England in 1967 but even that is a stretch.

And for it all to happen to us in our lifetimes, it'll never, ever be topped, from a Scotland point of view

Its a strange feeling but I don't think I will ever see a game of football as good as that. It's almost like what's the point anymore, nothing - unless we get to the final - is ever going to top Tuesday night.

43 year old reserve keeper, right back returning after 18 months out, arguably our best midfielder ruled out, centre half injured in the warm up to be replaced by a guy who had an absolute nightmare in the previous game. Going ahead so early with a spectacular goal (though didn't realise how good it was until saw it on someone's phone at half time- didn't even realise it was McTominay as I swear McKenna's name came up on the board), brightest young star crocked after 20 minutes, Danes drawing level through a controversial penalty, striker that half of Scotland wanted to start comes on and puts us ahead, they equalise with 10 minutes to go and you think it's happening again. And then Tierney and McLean's wonder goals.

It may not have been the greatest game technically or in terms of the players but for the result and the drama, I can't see how it will ever be beaten.

The stadium definitely put McKenna as the scorer on the scoreboard.

It caused great confusion amongst everyone around me, as surely McKenna of all people hadn't ghosted past everyone else on the park to go from deepest lying outfielder to the most advanced attacking a cross in the box?

Although one of the Aberdonians near us shrugged and said it was only his second best goal, behind his McFadden-esque effort against Killie 7 or 8 years ago. 

Most people agreed it made far more sense when the correction for McTominay filtered through.

I don't think that takes the shine off anything. It is part and parcel of the game, that if one team is chasing a winner/equaliser, they may be more exposed at the back. It may be something Denmark consoles themselves with, but it doesn't take away the extraordinary finale from our side.

Apparently there have been complaints to BBC News that there has been too much coverage of Scotland qualifying. 

The Nigels just don't like to anyone else in the archipelago being happy....especially us 😆

Thanks!   When we got home and watched the game again and McTominay scored, I thought I'd dreamt that scene.   At the time (a long way away and low down in the stand) I guessed Christie had scored, so looked up to check.

I did spot the assist from G-Doak though, after having said he lacked a final ball sometimes 😮

We were on the receiving end of this against Hungary and Ukraine in recent years, it's a good feeling to be dishing it out.
