Broath Boy Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 Hi, I’ve managed to balls up my hotel booking and ended up booking a hotel near Omonoia Square (hotel is 4 minute walk from the metro station), having read the reviews and being a solo traveller I don’t fancy walking that area after dark so although Omonoia Square is a 20 minute walk from the city centre how much would I expect to pay for a taxi and are there any haggle tips and is it cash only, any advice, cheers. (Hotel was booked through EasyJet so in process of trying to move hotel. Quote
kumnio Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 Just download uber, its so much easier than tying to speak to a taxi driver. Omonia is a shit hole, but you will be fine. Quote
bvborussia Posted November 7, 2025 Posted November 7, 2025 Yeeahhh Omonia isn’t the place to be. Many suspects on the streets. Be carefully at night… Quote

As far as I can gather if your a hotel near the metro and walk the main roads (no side alleys) then you should be okay, police station nearby and what I’ve read the hookers/junkies/weirdos tend to only interact with themselves, I’m doing uber after dark but in daylight will be walking the streets. We stayed a couple of nights in the Athens Tiare Hotel in 2018 for a Hibs Euro trip, right on Omonia. During the day, it was very busy, full of locals & tourists, as is a local transport hub. After dark you could see the odd drug deal being done, but seemed calm enough. Our bus returned from Tripolis about 2.30am & we walked to the hotel, no trouble at all. Quote

Rich NATA Posted November 10, 2025 Posted November 10, 2025 Walked along the edge of Omonia yesterday, en route to the Panathinaikos stadium, but this was early evening and seemed kinda okay. P.S. just east of Omonia there is an area with MANY bars in different streets, but all are about 1 minute from eachother It felt safe around there. Clientele were decent. Quote
Easy_1967 Posted November 10, 2025 Posted November 10, 2025 (edited) We stayed near Omonia Square for the Panathinaikos v Motherwell game years back. It definitely wasn't the most appealing place to be, had folk shooting up all over the place, but bizarrely I don't think I ever felt actually unsafe at any point. Did see a guy catch & kill a pigeon though, then head off with it in one hand & a big container of what looked like cooking oil in the other. Had a great trip though.
