Hertsscot Posted October 4, 2025 Posted October 4, 2025 I've had this done a couple of times and found it to be helpful Quote
TDYER63 Posted October 4, 2025 Posted October 4, 2025 Does it help with hearing at all ? My hearing is getting poor , not sure how much it has to do with simply getting older or if there is an actual problem. I use subtitles all the time on TV , I don’t know if I have just become lazy and rely on them now or if I do have a hearing issue . I find it hard to hear or concentrate in noisy places unless its someone sitting right next to me. I do know my ears probably need cleaned as I had a sort of basic check up through my work last year, before i retired . The Sri Lankan lady doctor looked in one ear and said ‘ hmm. Vereee waxee’ . Then she said the exact same about the other. I don’t feel my ears are actually blocked but I would get it done if I felt it might help with my hearing. Quote
Hertsscot Posted October 4, 2025 Author Posted October 4, 2025 I started suffering from tinnitus a while back and have some hearing loss as well. I think it all started after the ending of the second lockdown. We went back into school and I found myself increasingly asking students to repeat their answers. There were mitigating factors, mask wearing, more external noise due to open doors and windows, more pupils chatting (because you couldn't see them chatting!) but eventually went to the GP who didn't seem that interested and sent me to Specsavers. Treatment since we moved to Scotland has been much better, GP took it seriously, referred me to the audiology dept in Livingston who were also good. Borderline for hearing aid but didn't go down that route - probably vanity or trying to kid myself I'm not getting older! Hearing is generally okay and I survived in the classroom but had the ears syringed a month or so ago as I felt there was some built up In conclusion if I were you, I'd get myself checked out. You've nothing to lose...except maybe some earwax! Quote
TDYER63 Posted October 4, 2025 Posted October 4, 2025 Tinnitus isnt good, my husband gets it, it drives him mad. Even madder than I drive him. I think i will get it done. As you say what have I got to lose , I know I need my ears cleaned anyway. I wouldn’t fancy a hearing aid either, though I am starting to say ‘eh ! ? ‘a lot . My husband’s hearing is bad too. We can have a conversation where both of us are hearing totally different things from each other. Its actually quite funny, its amazing how you can have a conversation based on hearing the wrong thing but your reply still makes sense in the context of it. Quote

Just fairly standard for any couple - I'm sure my wife hears very different things compared to what I actually said! Quote

They talk a different language though don't they. When she says "You'll be going to the pub again tonight", that obviously means that she wants you to go to the pub. But it's not what she thinks she said. Quote
Ally Bongo Posted October 4, 2025 Posted October 4, 2025 I assume the Otex drops or the like were no use ? Quote
Hertsscot Posted October 5, 2025 Author Posted October 5, 2025 In my understanding these can actually make things a bit worse in the short term (not sure why) but I think they like you to use something (Olive oil) in the week or so before getting your ears done. Quote

As an aside i bought some clove oil this week for a replacement filling that was taking a while to settle down even after a repeat visit to get it filed down and my bite checked I dont need to read the instructions i said to myself as i have saw the Dustin Hoffman Marathon Man clip on several occasions and you only need to put a little on your finger and stick it in your gob 3 days later and i can still smell clove oil fucking everywhere Everything i touched after i administered it has left it's mark - most noticeably my vape pen even after washing it and scrubbing it with antibiotic wipes Use a cotton bud as it says on the bottle ... Orraloon Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 DIY hearing test. It's not a top of the range test, but it might be enough to convince you to go to somebody who knows what they are doing. https://rnid.org.uk/information-and-support/take-online-hearing-check/ Quote

bonzo Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 As I said on the other thread I got it done a week or so ago. I had an itchy ear and went to boots for some cream for it, was told no you need to go to specsavers and get it checked. Are you taking the pee I asked and I was sternly looked at 😄 and told wax buildup can irritate your ear. So long story short got it done £60 for the privilege, loads of wax removed, don't think I can hear any better and my ear is still fuckin itchy🤬 Quote

Toepoke Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 (edited) Get a big bottle of hydrogen peroxide solution, a couple of drops has the same effect as Otex for a lot less cost. Keeps your ear hair nice and blonde into the bargain. Edited October 5, 2025 by Toepoke Quote

Big Ramy 1314 Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 I have 80% hearing loss in my left ear, and 70% loss in my right ear. I also have permanent tinnitus in my left ear for the last 20 years, it's awful. I wear hearing aids in both ears as it's unbearable without them... Cleaning my ears is simple. I use hydrogen peroxide every couple weeks to keep both ear canals clean.. Regular visits to my ear specialist every 6 months for a proper cleaning and get my hearing aids checked.. My hearing aids are £4000,00 quid.. Complete with Bluetooth and all the bells and whistles... My advice to anyone, wear hearing protection around loud noise, and keep your ears clean. You do not want to go through what I am going through, tinnitus is awful... Working in the Water Board, in construction over 30 years, and I wore hearing protection, still did not help. Also playing Bagpipes for over 30 years... Look after your hearing, I go to bed every night with ringing in my left ear, it's unbearable some nights and I can't sleep... Just my own advice folks.... Sorry to hear about that. Everyone's experience is different. I miss silence but I've learnt to live with it and even laugh at it. I had one occasion late at night when I genuinely thought a house alarm was going off but it was my tinnitus instead! Quote
