Not necessarily Scottish u21s. Ross McAusland and Johnny Kenny will be making up a big part of that percentage for Rangers and Celtic. Lennon Miller is doing a lot of heavy lifting for that Motherwell percentage as well. Dane Murray has been getting a lot of good reviews in pre-season, but even he is 22 now. So wouldn't even count towards that stat for 25/26. Quote
Scots_Wha_Hae Posted July 21, 2025 Posted July 21, 2025 Those numbers are atrocious, yet I have still had arguments here with people who will not accept we are abnormally bad at youth development. We are shockingly bad at producing football players, yet somehow expect to have a good football team. It really is incredibly simple logic as to why we consistently fail, but for some reason we cannot muster it in ourselves as either a country or a league structure to do anything beyond the absolute minimum to change things. I think 10 goals would be a very very good stretch target for the season. Another goal for One tonight, albeit obviously still in a pre-season game. I would be very very pleased to eat my words on this one. Quote

Some came off and some didn't but overall pretty good. Also thought Soutter was good tonight. Good defensive blocks and headers Quote
ProudScot Posted July 23, 2025 Posted July 23, 2025 John Souttar and Findlay Curtis both excellent last night in the CL vs Panathinaikos for Rangers. Good to see two Scots starting (hopefully more to come but this is Rangers!) and an 18 year old starting, scoring and getting MOM. He looked electric Quote

Will either be the new messiah or go out on loan to Livi next season. Think Russell Martin does have a decent record of bringing young players through. Quote

I thought the same when I saw he could be a winger but he looks more the type to play down the left but cut inside. I'd rather have a true winger like Doak. The way he ran and scored reminded me of McTominay. Let's hope he gets a regular run of games. Hopefully Barron sees some action under Martin too but I have a doubt there. Quote

Martin's system of play is quite weird, 3 right-footed players on the left in Souttar, Raskin & Curtis. The first half is certainly wasn't working & Curtis's touch & pass looked poor. He always got the ball with his back to the game which didn't help , a positive was his work rate tracking back. 2nd half he did well ,a couple of moments of true magic which led to a goal & the Greek full-back seeing red. Way too early to get excited about him, but there's certainly some potential as he can shoot & looks relatively quick. I've said this before but I don't think Barron's strong or quick enough to be a truly top player. Gilmour gets away with it arguably due to his superb technique. Quote

Diamond Scot Posted July 23, 2025 Posted July 23, 2025 Barron isnt and wont ever be anywhere near the standard of player Gilmour is. He should get ample games for Rangers given the number of games they will play but he wont be 1st choice and wont get as many as last season. That being said he will be good enough to make Scotland squads going forward but again not participating unless lots of injuries. Quote

He probably won't but he's coming up for 23 and may improve dramatically in the next few years. He's also a defensive midfielder which we're crying out for. Quote
Guest Posted July 24, 2025 Posted July 24, 2025 I know it's only against lesser teams in the League Cup but Shankland has been doing pretty well for Hearts. Currently, it would be hard to justify Wilson being selected ahead of him. Maybe neither will be selected. It will actually be quite interesting to see who Clarke picks as his forwards for September. You'd assume Adams will definitely be in but I suspect Dykes won't and Hirst will be seen as his replacement. He'll also probably pick Conway. Quote

We actually have quite a large pool of strikers to choose from these days. Pretty tough decision to make. Oli Burke should probably be back in the reckoning as well. Ryan One could force his way in this year, too. It's quite odd thinking that James Wilson is now immortalised in the history books as the youngest capped player of all time. Hopefully he makes a name for himself and not have people in the future think "who?" when they read his name? Quote

Which is why we are still clamouring for more people to add to the pool, like One and Wilson. There is always an unexpected youngster or youngsters that have a breakout season every year. I wonder who it will be this year, and what position. Quote

Diamond Scot Posted July 24, 2025 Posted July 24, 2025 Wilson was a strange choice for a call up imo. Ive not seen him week in week out so stand to be corrected but from what ive seen he has been nothing special. Id firmly put him in the potential group. Normally call ups for youngsters only happen when they have been brilliant or break through at a huge club. Ie if a youngster got 2 or 3 games in the EPL for Liverpool or Man City I could see us calling them up. A few decent games for Hearts was all Wilson did. I hope im wrong but it looks like he has some way to go to become a top established Scottish Prem player far less a Scotland player. Quote

Aye, the current batch is average at best, but there seems to be a batch of promising youngsters forming. I'm thinking of Keiron Bowie, Ryan One, Bobby Wales, James Wilson, possibly Daniel Cummings too. You'd hope at least a couple of them would ripen into forwards of genuine class. Quote

Can add Rory Wilson to that list as well although that's potential at the minute. You'd hope he'd see first team football somewhere this season given that Villa have extended his contract. Quote

He's nowhere near the level of Shankland (who is still our best actual goalscoring striker in my opinion) and it was a strange one to call up someone who hadn't particularly stood out for Hearts. His dad is from Northern Ireland so that may explain the early call up. 7 hours ago, Tartan blood said: We actually have quite a large pool of strikers to choose from these days. Adams might be the best on paper but I sometimes struggle to see what he actually brings. Quote

You might be right with the last point but iirc we also had several injuries then which meant Clarke had even less options than normal. I'm glad he's stayed with Hearts this season and hopefully he can continue get game time. Quote
