Bernabeu had a ball hit his arm inside the box, he was facing the other way, no intent, and he was called for a penalty... VAR is useless !!! The rules were changed about 3 or 4 years ago from memory. It was to stop goals where the ball hits the goalscorer on the arm and then leads directly to a goal. Penalty doesnt need intent and hasnt done for about 15 years. Id imagine the Bernabeu one you are talking about the hand / arm was deemed to be in an un natural position which I believe is deemed to be something like if the arm is away from the siloette of the body. Ie if you jump and your arms to gain more height (which is a natural movement) and the ball hits them then its a penalty as your arms are up in the air. Its to stop people like John Terry who used to put his body in a star shape before the shot was hit. He wouldnt move his arms after the ball was hit so there was an argument that if the ball hit his arm it wasnt intentional. Its aimed to make the rules more consistent. Quote
ThistleWhistle Posted August 4, 2025 Posted August 4, 2025 Goodwin's been getting it tight for the nationalities brought in but think to an extent it misses the point as it's the short termism that's the problem. Having loads of loans and 1 year deals means there's no tradeable assets and your just losing money out the door then having to rebuild from scratch. This window he's signed 5 players who're on 2-3 year deals and from initial impressions two could be sold for profit. Add in Ferry, Graham and Cleall Harding until 2027 and if they can extend Sevelj beyond this summer then next summer won't be fire fighting but maybe concentrate on quality and loans won't be as disruptive. Maybe I'm over optimistic but think there seems to have been a change in Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts and United that there is at least the start of a coherent plan in having a squad with resale value, youngsters coming through who can be sold for profit and room for loan deals that increase the quality rather than signing journeymen with no resale at all. ThistleWhistle Posted August 5, 2025 Posted August 5, 2025 Hearts are going to be interesting - can already see the media trying make a circus out of them. Not sure what make of the Brighton fella as they're transfer business is brilliant typically but they're still in a shit load of debt so what happens if they get a couple of wrong 'uns in or have a bad season? However, I don't think it would take that much to split Rangers and Celtic if the recruitment was decent over a 3 year period supplemented with youth and access to decent loan players so the squad depth means you can play square pegs in square holes all season. Last night's game too for me shows why Xg is bollocks - Aberdeen won on Xg 1.5 - 0.9 whereas anyone with eyes could see Hearts were the better side for 60 minutes with another gear to go into and Aberdeen had a striker who couldn't trouble bovine buttocks with a selection of stringed instruments. Hmm, our transfer business has been pretty poor for the last 10 years, now we've got a bit more depth of strength so we'll have to see what happens. Not sure what you're talking about debt tho? what debt? Tony Bloom has invested £10m. Quote

Fairbairn Posted August 6, 2025 Posted August 6, 2025 Didn’t want to start a new thread for this but just saw that to celebrate 50 years of Sportscene, Saturday nights show will be presented by Dougie Donnelly with commentaries from Archie McPherson, Jock Brown and Rob McLean! What a stramash!! Quote

exile Posted August 6, 2025 Posted August 6, 2025 (edited) If I remember correctly, in the 'good old days', there was one Sportscene programme on a Saturday night that had highlights of one game, and Scotsport on a Sunday that had highlights of another game. So most games even in Premier League were not televised so there could be a wonder goal in a 4-4 thriller between Morton and Dumbarton and no one would see it unless they were at the match. And there was no Match of the Day. I've just checked and there was actually a Morton 2-4 Dumbarton thriller (on 15th December 1984). But who knows if there were any wonder goals? If you asked any older St Mirren supporter what was the best goal they’ve ever saw I’d imagine everyone would say an astonishing Ian Scanlon volley from over 40 yards against Celtic at Love St in 1983. It capped a 4-2 victory after being 2-0 down, unfortunately no footage of it exists due to Sportscene/Scotsport one game policy at the time, a total travesty as it was definitely on paper the best looking fixture that day, hard to imagine an Old Firm away game not being shown live these days let alone highlights. slasher Posted August 7, 2025 Posted August 7, 2025 Andy Ritchie must have scored a fair few worldies that weren’t televised back in the day. I can remember him scoring a stunning hitch kick against us at Cappielow, but I don’t remember if the cameras were there or not. Fading memories of great maverick players like that who were a pleasure to watch whoever you supported, most teams had someone who could do something off the cuff back then. Sadly, I think a lot of that is coached out of kids these days. Quote

Have regularly thought about this and it's not nostalgia through tinted specs You could go to a game in the lower divisions and see your team cuffed but witness regular moments of brilliance from players who's names became legend even though they never broke through to the big time You could always rhyme off your teams line up and knew who they were - like Golden Gordon in Ripping Yarns ! Mostly all of them were a hundred times better skilled than what we develop now Quote
