exile Posted May 21, 2025 Posted May 21, 2025 What is AI good for? Or what it's bad at? Whether this is your own experience of AI tools, or about the wider future of technology, humanity, etc. Quote
Malcolm Posted May 21, 2025 Posted May 21, 2025 not sure….. let me check with my friend Grok…. AI is about to change everything, in the same way that the industrial revolution and then the internet did. If your job involves just pulling together information sources it’s over. There will be enormous societal and labour market changes in next few years. I am glad that I am near the back end of that. Quote
Ally Bongo Posted May 21, 2025 Posted May 21, 2025 Surely it will be bad news for sex dolls with them having opinions and the like ? Quote
exile Posted May 21, 2025 Author Posted May 21, 2025 I've found it useful for summarising things in areas where there is plenty of existing information. But it can miss things, and get things wrong, and yet can end up insisting something is the case when it isn't (so, a bit human there). So not wholly reliable. On a recent thread it reasonably summarised arguments on whether Hearts or HIbs was the bigger club, but missed actual attendances (or indicators like assets, turnover, etc). I asked it about 'the Natural Order' and it got it; but that was reliant on an existing internet source getting it. It was not so good at dealing with historical permutations of 'what ifs' at Euro 2024. It failed to analyse a tweet about Taylor Swift at Somerset Park, and just made up some nonsense. Quote
Fairbairn Posted May 21, 2025 Posted May 21, 2025 I used Chat GPT to design my garden (kind of) and it did a really good job. I uploaded a photo of my current garden, told it what I wanted and it sent back pictures based on that. Took a few tweaks to refine it but ended up with visualisation of what I was looking for and it looks great. Quote
phart Posted May 21, 2025 Posted May 21, 2025 (edited) ChatGPT et al are really good if you already have knowledge on the subject and you want some help. You can then spot the mistakes in the answers and correct it with new prompts. However if you have no clue then it can sometimes feed you any old shite and you have no idea whether it is true or not. It's really good for coding not surprisingly. Edited May 21, 2025 by phart Quote

Not sure if those that work in tech know if there is a focus on the incorrect assumptions that can be made and an ability to fix or alter a process or decision. Quote

Hertsscot Posted May 21, 2025 Posted May 21, 2025 I wrote a book last year. Rather than employ a proofreader I used AI for basic tasks like checking that what I'd written made sense. I've also used it at school. I was doing long term supply and it was helpful in putting together a short course on the Cold War. It was less useful when I was trying to put together a lesson on opposition to WW1 in Scotland as it gave me a lot of misinformation about John MacLean! It's a tool. It's useful and certainly time saving but it's only as good as the information it already has and the instructions you give it. Quote

Harry Wragg was a famous British jockey and racehorse trainer (1902–1985), known as "The Head Waiter" for his tactical riding style. The nickname "Harry Wraggs" for Partick Thistle is used affectionately by fans and in media, as seen in references like the book Kit Bags, Flags, and the Harry Wraggs, which celebrates the club’s Colin Weir Stand, and articles such as one from The Scotsman calling the team "The Maryhill Magyars! The Harry Wraggs!" Additionally, "Harry Wragg" is rhyming slang for "fag" (cigarette), notably used in the Kinks’ 1967 song "Harry Rag" and still occasionally heard in Dublin Quote

Businesses are already often poor at dealing with situations they hadn't built into their processes (or even ones that are). It will only get worse when there isn't a way to contact someone and it's already like that in some areas of 'life admin'. So many jobs need hands on personal skills, empathy or just something that can't be replicated by AI. Are they going to be the only shitty paid ones left even though vital to a functioning town?
