Well if polls held at 60 % or more I think the decision would be out of global corporations remit. The UK would look distinctly like a dictatorship if this was constantly ignored . Especially if the last referendum was 15-20 yrs previously.

The UK is a dictatorship as far I'm concerned until the likes of Starmer can tell us how Scotland or Wales can leave the UK. If we can't leave no matter how we vote, then it's not a democracy.

I agree, but without an obvious large majority for independence it will not get noticed.

How any sane working class Scottish person could vote for Farage is beyond me. Openly talking about privatising the NHS and binning the Barnett formula. There’s nowt so queer as folk.

'Out of the frying pan into the fire', is the expression that springs to mind. I saw the Record had a big picture of Farage in their front page with the word 'Chancer' which is an accurate description.

I think many working class Reform voters haven't worked out that they'll be most hit if Farage gets into power. Paying to see the GP, public services shredded, workers rights in tatters. And working class Scots even more so.

Agreed, but I'm frustrated that our politicians and journalists don't highlight it more often

How many of the 600k that have died have been replaced by incomers from south of the border?  That'd be interesting to know.  You can put that particular demographic at 80+% in favour of No I'd imagine.

Before Brexit i'd have agreed with that number. I'm not so sure now. My guess would be 50-50 now.

My guess it would be lower than 80%, but still a bit more pro-Union, so probably 55+.

I agree that Brexit would be partly a reason, also people fleeing the previous Tory regime and Reform political climate.

Also some people who are patriotic Brits might feel Scotland has too uncertain (or even hostile) a political climate to come here.

And some of those coming from down south might be Europeans or from overseas who are not necessarily diehard unionists.

As I've said before, I think the biggest challenge is to convince moderate unionist* Scots of the benefits of independence; if those arguments are convincing then it would also convince moderate unionist incomers.

* I am not talking about UJ-waving Brit nationalists.

He reminds me of Boycie from Only Fools and Horses for some reason. Probably his coat …

There was a bit of noise from the SNP after the Supreme Court decision but you are right, its not voiced enough. Definitely not by the media.

It's easy to get disillusioned with politics in these circumstances.

They say politics is tribal, like football. But at least in football, people know who's on their side.

You would be forgiven for thinking that as i have never known campaigning like this for any election previously

The leafleting alone must have wasted enough paper to fill a forest ...and i am not exaggerating if you think about every household getting leaflets from all parties including at least five each from SNP, Labour and Reform

When the SNP were riding high i can remember Christina and Margaret Ferrier chapping doors but there was nothing from the other parties - and there were no high profile elected SNP members doing the rounds - maybe its because they have nothing better to do after being voted out

I can remember the SNP activists on polling day chapping doors and asking if anyone wanted a lift to the polling station

That has only happened once but as i say it was when the SNP were riding high

The campaigning for Reform went all out in Larkhall - umpteen activists waving leaflets and flags on the main street and cars peeping them

Katie across the road from me doesnt normally vote but i have pestered her that much that she told the Reform guy to fuck off

It was also the busiest i have seen at the polling station - and ours is normally quiet - even on referendum day

I keep wondering if there are any implications at Holyrood if the SNP lose this seat with regards their majority - but i cant see it

John Swinney just asked me to remind you to head down to the polling station. Every vote counts. 👍

The ghost of Winnie Ewing just appeared to say she'd be birlin' in her grave if Nige's Brit nats won this by-election.

The snp will win this but it will be closer than any expected IMO, could be wrong,, the snp have thrown everything at this which gives me the impression they are worried

Out of the frying pan into the fire wearing a foil jaiket! I saw a story the other day about their proposals for running a council better using AI so that folk can get their potholes fixed and bins collected more often 🤔

I think the Record was quoting Souness warning voters about Farage being a chancer! I'd like to think we're better at picking up on that up here with folk having less time for the likes of Farage or Johnson.

I'm still going on the belief that the Scottish electorate are the most politically aware in these Islands

Parts of Lanarkshire and Ayrshire can be very much outliers where the bigot vote rally around the party that is most likely to beat the SNP

It is clear that the bigot vote is going to go all in on Reform

However - this constituency has never voted right wing/ centre right in my lifetime - and it has not even been close

I agree it's a nonsense but the unionists are twisting words/meaning to make it a thing. Salmond was trying to rally people into voting in 2014 urging it was a once in a generation chance (or words to that effect) and it has since been twisted by unionists to say Salmond  said it was a once in a generation referendum. Well in any case if they are holding him (totally erroneously) to that then in 2034 we should be expecting without question a referendum as it will be a generation passed.

SNP should have the easy and consistent response to this but keep missing the open goal.

They should simply reply that if the terms were to be bound as ‘once in a generation’ , why wasn’t that defined and written into the Edinburgh Agreement by the (seemingly portrayed as) competent UK Gov.

Hopefully it hasn't come out to support Labour (which the BBC seem like they're willing it to be).

Slightly off topic but does anyone else cringe when a politician uses the word "scunnered"? Specifically the middle class ones that would never in a month of Sundays naturally use it.

I heard lanky Jim Murphy use it non stop during the independence referendum campaign - "voters are scunnered by politics" - and it seems to be used whenever a politician wants to appear more Scottish and working class, Sarwar the latest to pull it out the vocabulary box on a regular basis.

"Look at me being common and down with the working class". Get bent.

Losing to Labour with the disaster that is Starmer's government coupled with Reform splitting the unionist vote is an absolute beaming embarassment.

Reform very nearly beat the SNP

Shameful

Interesting result.

Could be an indicator of how the west of Scotland will vote in the next Scottish election.

Alot of ppl are sick of the SNP and want a change. Just surprised they want labour.

Worrying to see reform do well and nearly nick second. They actually aren't that far behind first either.

Saying that I would expect this to be prime territory for them to do well as it contains larkhall.
