For instance, I suggested playing Scott McTominay as a number 9. Was there a thoughtful and insightful rebuttal? Did it spark an intelligent conversation? Not really. My suggestion was instantly disregarded without a moment's deliberation by the usual mob of naysayers. I was even hit by a "We should play Billy Gilmour as a number 9" by some random Jabroni. I'm open minded to any idea. (as long as it's not an obvious pisstake.) Scott McTominay has scored 17 league goals in two seasons in two elite leagues. He is a natural finisher. Billy Gilmour has never scored a club goal. It's hardly compatible. It's an obvious pisstake. And I gave it the response that it deserved; I ignored it. Scott McTominay would do a better job as a striker than any of the options Scotland has. He can finish. He can finish at an elite level. Give Scott McTominay the ball in the box, he'll score. Whereas, give Adams or Shankland the ball in the box, the ball will either bounce off them or they'll score a field goal. Unfortunately, this isn't the NFL. If Steve Clarke has any sense he'll play Scott McTominay as the number 9 in the upcoming friendlies. I am sick of Adams and his disoriented moth around a flame routine. Kenny Miller took pelters, but I would take Miller over Adams. I would also take McCoist, Gallacher, Durie, Booth, Burchill and Boyd over Adams. Are there any admins on here? Quote

I am considering your suggestion, we could get Ferguson on the park as the attacking midfielder or even move McGinn to the middle and put Gauld on the left and Doak on the right. Gilmour, Barron, McLean, Christie in the midfield two. Man management is says to Nisbet, Adams, Conway that Clarke doesnt believe they are good enough are negatives however. It gets all my favorites on McT, Gauld, McGinn, Doak but it plays arguably our best player out of position. The way we play we seem to lack service up to our Forward so its maybe moot however we have yet to give Gauld proper minutes and see the benefit if his crossing and assists. Guest Posted May 24, 2025 Posted May 24, 2025 What a first half from McTominay that was. I hope he stays at Napoli and Conte does too. He's playing the best football of his career under him after all. I.also thought Gilmour did well (he does the basics really well) but I prefer when he plays a bit further forward as his passing is so accurate. Quote
supersub Posted May 24, 2025 Posted May 24, 2025 Absolute scenes. Delighted for both McTominay and Gilmour. What a season and for McTominay to be named MVP - well deserved! Quote
ParisInAKilt Posted May 24, 2025 Posted May 24, 2025 Absolutely delighted for the pair of them. Top pros and they seem to really have embraced Naples and Italian culture. Reading some of the Man U forums today and it’s a mixture of opinions, it’s genuinely remarkable how so many can’t acknowledge he was played out of position at United and are still doubling down that selling him for 25 million is still a good bit of business. Yes, so many - including some well-wishers - saying he was not good enough, just a squad player, but couldn't imagine that someone could just make best use of him and they can't see that. Also, so many on social media saying things like 'wow, didn't see that one coming' as if they had blanked out all his international goals. Quote

Amazing isn’t it. “Just a squad player” this is a club that O’Shea, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Wes Brown and no doubt many more contributed to some of Fergusons best teams. McTominay would have been a valuable player in all of Fergusons teams, his ability to score goals and attitude etc, the fact so many United fans can’t see that shows how far as a club they’ve fallen. I'm not sure the level of ignorance a clubs fans have has any bearing on what level the club have got to? Two totally independent things. If Man U win a treble next season those fans will still be just as ignorant as they are now. Quote

Using 17 goals in 2 seasons as a reason to start McTom as a striker. Thats 8 and a half goals a year. Adams the moth has scored 9 goals in Italy this season playing for a much lesser side than McTom. By all means put forward your opinions but you are using stats to build somebody up that actually also support the player you are trying to discredit. Midfield should be Ferguson and Gilmour deep. Doak left, McGinn right and McTom through the middle. Saying that I dont believe Ferguson has done anywhere near enough in a Scotland shirt to merit a starting position but id be willing to give him some games as he is clearly doing it at club level and has a higher ceiling than McLean. Mentioning Barron in the conversation is beyond stupid. Why you would consider playing our best player and Italys MVP out of position to accomodate a player who isnt a certain starter for one of the worst Rangers sides in history is beyond me. Quote

Doak on the left? I think he's much better on the right. Would he not end up cutting inside? McGinn would cut inside too so the width we'd lack width. Unless you're playing wingbacks which means you'd have to drop two midfielders (one if McTominay is playing just off another forward). Quote

Ideally id play Doak on the right but im not a fan of McGinn on the left so it would be needs must. I also dont see it as a big issue as Roberton / Tierney will provide width on the left and Hickey / Patterson / Johnstone can provide it on the right. I think if you play Doak on the right then you dont play McGinn. Quote

Particularly not the most recent one. I didn't bring up Barron. Someone mentioned bringing in Barron, or Ferguson, and I agreed that it should be a option. I know that hypotheses and ideas are frowned upon in this place, but don't make up stuff. And cut out the abuse. No idea is "beyond stupid" if it's a serious suggestion. Adams has as many goals in Italy as McTominay for a lesser side. You are now shifting the goalposts by saying Adams couldnt score the goals McTominay does. By that account he must score goals that McTominay doesnt as they have the same. Its not like Adams goals have been tap ins by a side creating millions of chances. Saying something is beyond stupid isnt abusive. Saying a person is beyond stupid would be. Im not totally against trying McTominay up front but I dont think the circumstances merit it. If we were stacked with similar standard attacking mids who play in McTominays role then perhaps but thats not the case. Ferguson can play deeper as he does for Bolonga. If you take the 5 mids and 1 striker positions. McTom, McGinn, Doak and Gilmour are probably certain starters. Most would have Ferguson starting. So you are talking about Adams, Dykes, Christie, McLean and others of similar level for the 6th spot. One of them would have to play. Is it really worth playing McTominay out of position to fit McLean or Christie in? Quote
