After a mostly bonkers opening ceremony (didn't expect Celine Dion to save the evening's viewing but she was tremendous 👍🏻) I'm settling down to the usual first day of the Olympics, watching swimming races.

I used to look forward to the Olympics l, but not anymore. After watching the opening ceremonies, its all about money, fashion, who's who. Some of the new events are bizzare. "Break Dancing" ?? I am done !!! Best of luck to our Scottish athletes mind you... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Eff the Brits, Ramy!

On that note, why does "Team GB" exist in an Olympic context? If Scotland isn't allowed a team cos we're not a proper country, how the effin jeffin is there a GB team? Ain't no country called GB.

Full name of the team is Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Although competitors from NI can represent Ireland if they choose (eg. Rory McIlroy).

I don't think there's any reason why Scotland can't send their own team, other non-sovereign nations are there. I guess there's never been the appetite (or cash) for it.

Anyway, tremendous atmosphere at the Stade de France for the rugby sevens as the host nation take Fiji's title from them. Dupont is some player!

Great stuff from Andy Murray and Dan Evans. The big man has at least one more tennis match to play before hanging up his racket.

Incredible 5 match points saved! Dan Evans did brilliantly in particular.

Followed by BBC tears as Adam Peaty got beat 😭

I saw someone describe them as career points, Murray is incredible.

Great night for the Scottish lads. Andy Murray does what Andy Murray does and saves 2 match points to get through to the quarters with Dan Evans. And in the pool Duncan Scott puts in an unbelievable anchor leg in the 200m relay to win gold. Now has the same amount of Olympic medals as Chris Hoy (although more golds for Hoy obviously).

👍 Enjoyed it too this evening; watched the tennis live then rewound the swim relay while trying to avoid seeing the result! Pleased for Duncan Scott after his narrow medal miss.

And a bronze this morning for Glaswegian Beth Potter in the triathlon.

Tremendous achievement. Okay I know he's not a Scot but great performance from Alex Yee to get a gold in the men's event. BBC commentators seemed to have written him off but he timed it perfectly.

Did that turn out to be a bit of a turd dodging competition? Why anybody would consider swimming in water like that is beyond my understanding. 🤮

Bit like an obstacle race?

The organisers will say they got incredible crowds which I guess is one of the main reasons for holding it through central Paris but if you're going to hold an event like that in the middle of the city there's always likely to be problems with the swimming section.

Simone Biles is a freakishly unhuman athlete. Unbelievable ability.

Good to see her recover from the twisties, she got harshly judged on here and other places for that last time out. A weird strength of feeling about it too.

Watching a gruelling 1500m swim just now. The leader Ledecky is miles ahead and barely kicking her legs. Fascinating technique.

They've talked about it being 'a slow pool'. I'm not much of a swimmer, what exactly does that mean? I get how an athletics track might be fast but less clear about how that can be true for a pool.

I don't know really, would have thought there were specific parameters for it to be an Olympic pool?? I suppose if you could lose a medal by such a tiny 0.02 of a second or whatever then anything could contribute. You might be more buoyed in deeper water perhaps? I think it seems easier to learn to swim when it's not as shallow somehow, just thinking of when we go swimming with the wee man.
