A9 Average Speed Cameras

Heard a bit of Morning Call on the radio discussing this. Interesting call from an old fella who used to drive the original A9 back in the 60s/70s, he said it was a much safer road then despite being a bit slower. There were a number of tight turns which led on to straight sections for overtaking meaning that passing manoeuvres could take place at much lower speeds. As opposed to the long sweeping curves now (which are great to drive, but if there's nobody else on the road).

The consensus seemed to be that road should have been fully dualled when it was upgraded in the 80s. Would've cost a bit more at the time, but a fraction of what it's now going to. Short term, short sighted planning again....

Average speed cameras on the dualled section between Stirling & Perth is a fecking disgrace IMO.

Nothing but a money making scheme that'll do feck all to make the road safer.

Disagree a bit, they certainly made a difference on the A77 where there were many accidents around at-grade junctions, as there are between Dunblane and Perth.

How? Will it stop folk doing stupid overtakes? No it won't.

Did Perth to Tain in little over 2 hours a few weeks ago, sadly a thing of the past now!

Perth to Tain says it takes 2 hours 55 minutes.

It took you just over 2 hours.

You must have been hammering it, puttin gothers in danger.

If these cameras slow down dangerous drivers like you, then im all for them.

Not always true. it is possible to drive fast but safely. it is also possible to drive slowly and cause accidents through frustration.

^ the problem with the A9 is that its not a motorway.
when the A9 is quiet it *can* be a fast road and driven safely at speed (70-80mph)

however when it is busy a safe average speed is more like 60mph ?

average speed cameras will quickly change the perception that the A9 is a "fast road".
cameras will clearly stop people trying to do Perth -> Inverness in 2 hours whatever the conditions.
obviously no one likes to be watched by big brother - but the cameras will save lives.

if you want a right laugh check out the "anti SNP" vitriol on the "A9 average speed cameras are not the answer" facebook group.

they seem to have forgotten that the A9 is clearly a cross party issue ? and that only one UK political party has ever committed a time scale and budget for dualling the entire road ;)

the A9 upgrade will be the biggest transport investment ever made in Scotland (£3 billion). it is obviously a huge project that is long overdue. the real scandal in my opinion is that it is not a UK National Infastructure (NIP) project fast-tracked for priority funding like HS2, east London tunnel or the Thameslink....

People who think driving faster than 70mph is "dangerous" make me lol.

Depends on the road, conditions, volume of traffic.

The A9 can be safely driven at 80-90 mph *if* the road is quiet.

The problem is that people assume it can always be driven at speed.

The A9 is not a motorway - but people think it is ?

Only stupid people would think it's a motorway.

Motorway's start with "M", A Roads start with an "A".

The biggest problem with the A9 is not speeding but frustration being stuck behind HGVs. The daft overtaking is what causes accidents. And speed cameras will not solve this.

A revenue earner, nothing more nothing less.

2 points

1) Very few people get caught by average speed cameras. Detection rates are *very* low. It will take decades to recoup the installation costs.

2) The HGV speed limit has been changed to 50mph (was 40mph) so arguably the flow of the slowest traffic should be faster ?

If you can't average less than 80mph over a 30 mile stretch of road, you should be jailed rather than fined.

I agree, but it's not measured over the entire stretch it's you're average speed between pairs of cameras that are a couple of miles apart.

If they are set as high as 80, that is probably fair enough, I'd say averaging over 80 is starting to get a bit fast.

The drive to Aberdeen after Stirling will be an absolute joy now! Only Perth - Forfar with no cameras, and there's usually at least one camera van in that section.
