Ok. Deep breath.

I think we may look back on this as the first Great Information War. Except we're already 8 years in.

The first Great Information War began in 2014. The invasion of Ukraine is the latest front. And the idea it doesn't already involve us is fiction, a lie.
1/
It was Putin's fury at the removal of President Yankovych in Feb 2014 that kicked everything off. Information operations were first crucial step in invasion of Crimea & Donbass. A deliberate attempt to warp reality to confuse both Ukrainians & the world.
2/
This was not new. The Soviets had practiced "dezinformatsiya" for years. But what was new in 2014 was technology. Social media. It was a transformative moment. "Hybrid warfare" on steroids: a golden Willy Wonka ticket to manipulate hearts & minds. Almost completely invisibly.
3/
But it wasn't just Ukraine. We now know Russia began another offensive in Feb 2014. Against the West. Specifically, but not exclusively, America. How do we know this? Because the FBI conducted a forensic, multi-year investigation. That almost no-one paid any attention to.
4/
The Mueller Report. You've heard of it. But probably as a headline about how it didn't "prove" collusion between the Kremlin & Trump campaign. We can come back to that. What it did prove - BEYOND ANY DOUBT - was that Russia attacked 2016 US election through multiple routes.
5/
And just *one* of the ways Russia attacked 2016 US election was via the tech platforms. Especially: Facebook. This was a military technique, it pioneered in Ukraine in 2014. By 2016, it refined, iterated & supersized these. Most brilliantly of all, they were entirely invisible
6/
And it wasn't just Russia. Companies such as Cambridge Analytica. Political operatives such as Manafort. Amoral opportunists such as Cummings. They learned how to exploit a platform that was totally open - anyone could do so. And totally closed - no-one could see how.
7/
But also it *was* Russia. That's what the Mueller Report proves. And, again, Ukraine is at centre of it all.(Read @profshaw's thread here. Note walk-on role for Arron Banks's business partner & his friend the Russian spy)
8/
https://twitter.com/ProfessorShaw/status/1496672144566235137?s=20&t=R-3XODvj5XPyv6yF9Xm3uQ
In 2016, we knew none of this. Russia & other bad actors acted with impunity &, in some cases alignment. But now, through the sheer bloody hard work of academics, journalists & FBI, we do know.

But it was complex, messy, difficult. So..We brushed it all under the carpet
9/
We failed to acknowledge Russia had staged a military attack on the West. We called it "meddling". We used words like "interference". It wasn't. It was warfare. We've been under military attack for eight years now.
10/
This failure is at the heart of what is happening now in Ukraine. Because the first offensive in the Great Information War was from 2014-2022. And Putin won.

And he won by convincing us it wasn't even a war.
11/
We fell for it. We said it was "just ads" that "don't work anyhow". And "a bot didn't tell me to vote". Facebook is still an open threat surface. Exploited by authoritarians from Philippines to India to Brazil to Hungary. It's maybe not a world war. But the world is at war.
12/
Meanwhile, in Britain, we're a captured state. In America, the institutions of govt worked. Even in spite of Trump. The authorities investigated. Individuals were indicted, charged, jailed. The hostile actions of a foreign state examined & unpicked.
13/
(Not that it mattered.) The US media & therefore public failed to understand the real lessons of Mueller Report. And in the UK? We didn't even bother trying. We allowed Johnson's govt to sweep 2016 under the carpet. Nigel Farage. Arron Banks. Facebook. Russia. The lot.
14/
But it wasn't 'just ads'. It was war. And it's absolutely crucial that we now understand that Putin's attack on Ukraine & the West was a JOINT attack on both.

That began at the exact same time.

Across the exact same platforms.
15/
And this new front, the invasion of Ukraine, is not just about Ukraine. We are part of the plan. We have always been part of the plan. And Ukraine is not just fighting for Ukraine but for the rest of us too.
16/
And maybe that could be why we've failed to understand Putin's strategy in Ukraine? Because it's not just a strategy in Ukraine. It's directed at us too. And that's what makes this such a uniquely perilous moment. Not least, because we still don't understand we're at war.
17/
If it helps, the penny dropped for me with Skripal. Planned by the GRU - Russia's military intelligence. As was the weaponised hack-&-leak of Hillary's emails. Military doctrine carried out by military officials in military operations. Just like the one now in Ukraine.
18/
Anyway. You may think this is obvious or simplistic or naive. (It's all 3.) But fuck it. I don't care. Because what I've realised is that I've been an (information) war reporter for last 6 years. And the online equivalent of a thermobaric bomb has sucked the oxygen out of me
19/
The story of Arron Banks is intertwined with every single element of the above. That's for another time. What matters now is Ukraine. And the key to helping it is to understand that Putin isn't just coming for us next. He already has.

This might have blown my mind more than anything else today. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is wearing what appears to be Prada combat boots.
This is the full fascism propaganda film they put out. But given chechens’ rep as fearsome killers, I hope Ukrainians will take heart from fact there’s no way Kadyrov will want to get those £1,250 boots dirty
Lol. The Pravda combat boot. Who wore it better? ImageImage
Feb 25
At the time, my trial felt extreme & brutal & terrifying. My career, reputation, livelihood on line. One day on from Russia invading Ukraine, it feels like mad surreal dream. Did a pro-Putin apologist really get to put me on trial at high court for reporting on his Russian links?
It’s a test case for the public interest defence & it’ll (further) fuck journalism in this country & what we can safely report. But it’s so utterly utterly absurd that it came to this, that I can’t bring myself to care any more what happens to me. 1px.png1px.png
Amazing & honestly fascinating that not a single mainstream outlet other than @guardian covered it. Fresh evidence of Banks’s links to Russia & UK govt’s complicity in covering them up came out in trial & went entirely unreported.
Feb 25
I wrote this in Nov 2017. Days after FBI revealed multiple strands of Trump-Russia investigation ran through London & I pulled them apart further. It was also when the attacks against me began in earnest. From Cambridge Analytica, LeaveEU & Russian govt 1/ theguardian.com/politics/2017/…
Nov 17 is when it all suddenly got real. That first FBI indictment revealed it was unpicking a whole web of relationships between the Trump campaign & Kremlin. To people who not only had contacts in the UK. But with actual ministers in the govt. 2/ theguardian.com/politics/2017/…
The govt refused to answer any questions about its own ministers connections to figures FBI was investigating. One week previously, Johnson was asked if he'd seen any sign of foreign interference. "Nyet," he said. There are multiple reasons that we know this can't be true. 3/ 1px.png
Feb 25
President Zelensky personally imploring Boris Johnson to impose tougher sanctions ⬇️
Gunfire in Kiev ⬇️
The best way we can support Ukrainians is to support @ZelenskyyUa’s demands for tougher sanctions. It is utterly immoral that @boris_johnson is refusing to take action against oligarchs we know are close to the Kremlin & who call London their home
Feb 24
If you’re waking up, it’s worse than anyone imagined. Strikes across entire country. So much of this is on us. We laundered Putin’s money. We provided safe harbour for his chums. And in 2016, when he attacked the US & UK elections, we played dumb & covered it up. 1px.png
We’re so dumb in this country we didn’t even look. We’re so dumb it was locked by *a man who would be a subject of investigation himself*. Johnson is utterly compromised. His actions clearly demonstrate he’s an active national security threat. And he’s let down Ukraine utterly
While you were sleeping, Putin appeared to threaten the unthinkable. Then launched an offensive in city after city. This does not stop at Ukraine’s borders. And the information chaos he has sown in the West is not some weird coincidence. It was the just the beginning.

Btw, what kind of person takes the name of an African fascist? Unless he is indeed the President of Gabon?

Exceptionally weird indeed - we have actual clowns, moose worriers and oligarch PR employees on here! Who’s in charge of this shit show?!! By the grace of god Go!

She is a bit of a russia phobe loony looking at her articles.

https://threadreaderapp.com/user/carolecadwalla

Got herself tangled up in some libel case and has been playing the persecution card. Apparently Channel 4 and the BBC are colluding against her to not report her plight....

I mean read this one... she is raving and paranoid.

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1485193608839974914.html

Fuck knows why we had to have her last three articles cut and pasted above. She is a lightweight talking out her arse. Anyone still pushing the trump russia collusion crap is a liar. They were a liar back then and they are even more of liar now given all that has come out.

I also find it amusing that pointing out people are talking crap about Trump makes you pro-Trump.

Well that is news to me. The guy spent his entire presidency crawling up Benjamin Netanyahu's arsehole. (Much to my amusement Trump has been quoted as saying "Fuck him" after it emerged that Netanyahu's was the first person to call up Biden and congratulate him.

If he was still president the difference is that he would be attacking Iran and not Russia. Which actually would be a lot 'better'. 😀 We are so fucked.

Did people not pick up on the language used in the snippet I quoted above. Very fucking ominous.

"I would now like to say something very important for those who may be tempted to interfere in these developments from the outside. No matter who tries to stand in our way or all the more so create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history. No matter how the events unfold, we are ready. All the necessary decisions in this regard have been taken. I hope that my words will be heard.

All the necessary decisions in this regard have been taken... hmmm yeah.

Regardless of Thplinth's smears Cadwalladr has been excellent on the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica data scandal and as far as i am aware was more interested in Russian interference in the Brexit vote through Aaron Banks and Facebook's role with the Trump campaign rather than Russia and Trump

If it does go hot all those aircraft carrier fleets would be sunk in 2-3 days. That is by the Americans own estimates I think.

This whole scenario is so insane it is unimaginable. If it does go nuclear I would hope it would be military targets but it would just take one city to get bombed on any side and it would be unleashed.

We have the US, the UK and Israel (edit forgot Canada) provoking a war against a nuclear superpower in mainland Europe. This is 2022 not the 1930's. To be doing this is so reckless that it tells me the people running the show are dangerously displaced from reality, or worse they want this and they don't give a shit about the loss of life (especially in Europe). I increasingly favour the latter view (that they are psychos).

It is like watching lambs being led to slaughter. The jingoism is something to witness. Like watching people cheering on their (and your) own imminent slaughter. Quite horrifying in a way. It is starting to feel a bit surreal. That is never a good sign. 😀

It is times like this you can fully appreciate the contempt for the Scottish public our UK friends had by building Faslane 25 miles as the crow flies from Glasgow City Centre and Scotland's biggest population cluster.

If they nuked Faslane, it would cause severe damage (or maybe that should be improvements...) to Cappielow.  I think that's Putin's plan.  He put a tenner on Morton getting relegated when Gus Mcpherson was appointed manager and Dougie Imrie turning the team round has angered him.  This whole Ukraine thing is just an excuse.

😀 Finally some sense on this thread. I think you might be on to something. I like your point about how the nuclear shock wave and ensuing fireball could in some areas improve things. This is the Dunkirk spirit we have been lacking. When life deals you hydrogen bombs, make H-bombade.

Two more I can think of...

The extreme heat would at least solve the litter problem by incinerating it all where it lies.

Plus the tar on the roads would melt and fill in all the potholes.

Given the performance of the Russian military so far, their nuke bound for Faslane would land in the middle of the Atlantic.

To be fair you don’t know what’s going on, none of us do and to pretend otherwise is frankly ridiculous.
