Shielding the ball, ban it, it's obstruction

‘doing what would be fair and clearing it or trying to pass or dribble to safety’? You’re making it sound like the defender is cheating when he clearly isn’t. All he’s doing is protecting his side’s possession. Why should he risk that by playing a ball he doesn’t have to?
Besides, to even find a situation where this occurs in a game there has either been a wrongly weighted pass forward or miscontrol by the attacker. Blame the attacking side forhe shite pass or heavy touch.

Because he's obstructing the player with no intention of playing the ball himself. Theres a fine line between shielding a ball and obstructing especially if you end up a couple of yards away from the ball and your just blocking the player getting the ball.

Also it's not necessarily a poor forward pass or miscontrol if the attacker is able to get to it and the defender has to resort to blocking him. And even if a player does play a poor forward pass it doesn't mean a defender should be allowed to block or obstruct a player.

I would still argue that a player needs to have touched it to be in control of it, he is obstructing an attacking player if he uses his body to stop the attacker getting at the ball, how can he not be? obviously it has to be within reason, you couldn't give a free kick in every instance clearly but there's a difference between ushering a ball out and stopping the ball being played. Surely if you don't play the ball and stop the opposing player from playing it by using your body then you are obstructing him!?

The rule doesn't say anything about being "in control of the ball". It says you need to be within playing distance.

"A player may shield the ball by taking a position between an opponent and the ball if the ball is within playing distance and the opponent is not held off with the arms or body. "

If the rule said he had to be in control of the ball, then McBurnie would get a free kick against him every time the ball went near him. 🤣

Hmm, well either the refs or the rule are not doing their jobs. Key part of that "the opponent is not held off with the arms or body"... if the challenging player is held off from getting to the ball and the defending player does not touch the ball then it's obstruction surely?
