Andy Robertson

Lots of threads for individual players but none for Captain Fantastic.  It's not so long since folk were questioning whether he had the necessary leadership skills or whether he could influence the game from way out on the left.  There were even suggestions that SC should choose between him and Tierney and give KT the nod.

That must surely have been put to bed now.  A bad game from Andy Robertson is where he's 8/10.  A greetin'-faced, moanin' bstrd on the pitch and an articulate young man when being interviewed afterwards, we're lucky we have him as our captain.  When he finally retires, hopefully a long time from now, the SFA need to create a job for him going round every school in the country to explain just what hard work and dedication can do for you.

The amount of times you read, “plays well for Liverpool but never for Scotland”. Does my head in, It’s a complete myth. Folk that just don’t understand football.

For many of his caps he was whipping in balls to Oli McBurnie rather than Mo Salah so it’s little wonder he “looked better” for Liverpool

Watching him and Tierney link up and then link with the forward players is football porn

Completely agree with this

He's been superb this full campaign.

If him/Che has finished off that counter attack in the first half i think i'd have jizzed my pants.

What a move.

45 seconds in...

Rolled back to Andy and then into the bottom corner and that's the goal of the fkin century.

don’t think he is quite up there. Probably our second best fullback ever after Mcgrain, although a strong argument for Sandy jardine too.

I think Robbo can get better, as he gets more experienced as playing as a wing-back. I think we are starting to see him become more familiar and comfortable with the role.

As far as his end product goes, his finishing, crossing, passing, his decision-making in general. I think this will improve over time. As a wing-back, he is finding himself in slightly different areas / situations than he generally finds himself playing as an attacking fullback for Liverpool. Once he begins to show more composure, which I think will come with time, I believe he’ll be more effective in an around the opposition box. He is quite effective at the moment, and I’m very happy with his performances and our left-side. I do think, with time, it’ll get even better.
Has anyone heard how Robbo, Tierney and Gilmour are after the Denmark game? I hope they are just minor strains

People are having a laugh. Robertson is already superior to Malpas and McGrain. Those two players stayed withing the confines of the comfort bubbles of Celrtic and Dundee United. Robertson is at Liverpool has won the EPL and Champions League title with them and been in UEFA Team of the Year. Malpas and McGrain never reached those lofty heights.

Danny McGrain played at 2 World Cups and Scotland went into a state of mourning when he was injured prior to Argentina 78.  He was equally brilliant on either side of the pitch.  Much as I like and admire Andy Robertson, he's not at the level of Danny McGrain.  Ally McLeod used to say he picked McGrain and another 10 when selecting his teams.  The best full back on the planet at his peak (IMO).  Scottish football was a lot stronger back then as well.

Yes two World Cups when it was really very much easier for us to qualify. And the point here is what did McGrain achieve at club level and in Europe? Nostalgia often clouds things and that is definitely the case here. I'd bet even Danny himself would argue Robertson wins out.

Tbf mcgrain broke into the 9iar celtic team who were a top European team around that time albeit they were on the way down from the great heights of winning the European Cup in 67 and getting to the final in 1970.

Also its debatable wether the world cup was easier to qualify for back when mcgrain was involved.

The 78 world cup we beat the Czechs and Wales in a three team group to qualify for a world cup that only contained 16 teams. Personally I don't know how good Wales or the Czechs were back then but it certainly wouldn't be an easy group these days. Maybe some of the older guys on here might give us an insight on us managing to top that group.

Qualifying for the world cup 82 required us to top a group containing portugal, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Israel.

Northern Ireland were a strong team back then, I am guessing Portugal would of been a decent outfit as well.

The 74 world cup we qualified top of a group with denmark and the czechs. Again maybe some of the older posters could give us an insight into how good an achievement that was compared with today.

I reckon qualifying in 82 would of been quite tough especially topping that group.

Back on the subject of whos better, I would say Robertson at the end of his career will have had a better career and could be considered the better player but there isn't alot between them imo.

Is everyone with an epl and champions league medal world class? Come back in five years and if he is still doing it we will not need to argue.

Not just your opinion pretty sure Pele said much the same.

By default it must have been harder to qualify in the good old days as less teams qualified and areas of Eastern Europe hadn't been diluted.

The fact that we think any player achieving any sort of medal haull World class shows were we are these days.

Mcginn is just as close to being world class and he has won nothing of note.

74/78 saw the Czechs either side of winning the European Championship.  Denmark were a bit of a joke back then and didn't really start to come good until the early 80's.  Wales had a strong side with good players like James, Yorath, Flynn  and Toshack.  It was always a battle with them but we expected to be too good for them and were.  While a 3-team group looks easy, it doesn't leave hellish much margin for error!

82 - Portugal were stuffy at that time.  We drew 0-0 at Hampden and lost 2-1 away although we'd already qualified by that time.  The key result was winning 1-0 in our opener in Sweden which got us off to a flier.

We also beat Israel home and away. 😉😂

Football has leapt forward in leaps and bounds since the 1970s. Football has expanded across the globe. In the 1970s African teams were whipping boys at the World Cups but not anymore. Likewise the teams outwith Europe and South America. There were only 33 teams in Europe now there are 55. Other teams have developed their sides and are better than us. Is that Andy Robertson's fault? Of course not. My point being if you dropped Robertson into the 1974 and 1982 squads he'd have been a World Cup qualifier. Drop McGrain into today's game and would he have remained at Celtic? Would he he failed to have reached World Cups. I'd say yes to both.

Back then there were smaller groups but the overall standard was higher and crucially you had to finish top of your group to qualify.

Nowadays you get three chances to qualify, win the group, finish second and go into a playoff or via the nations league.

McGrain at his peak was a genuine world class player.

If success in Europe and winning a single league championship then Tommy Gemmell won four league championships in a row, won the European Cup and scored in the final and also scored when they were losing finalists.

Tommy Gemmell wasn’t a patch on McGrain.

Not sure I get your point.  If you dropped Andy Robertson into the 74 squad he wouldn't have got in the team.  He would have in front of Frank Gray in 82 though.  Would McGrain stay at Celtic with the silly money being thrown around nowadays?  Doubt it.  Kieran Tierney didn't and he was Celtic through and through.  I don't think even Danny McGrain could've single-handedly carried any of our teams this century to the WC so don't really get that.

Doubt if Robertson would have got a game in 74 if you were to compare his standing in today's game to McGrain and Jardine's in their era..

There's no chance McGrain would have stayed at Celtic if European football was as unbalanced in the 70's as it is now.

If your simply saying that Robertsons current fitness level, technical ability's  etc are better than McGrains was in the 70's your right, but you could probably drop the current Hibs team into the 1967 European Cup and they would have a fighting chance.

I’m not sure trophies won is the best indicator. If Liverpool had lost the CL final they won or if they hadn’t won the league Robertson would still be the same player.

The question you need to consider is whether Robertson is one of the best full backs in the world. If the answer to that is yes then he’s world class.
