I was replying to someone who who thought Callum McGregor was a better player than Scott McTominay.

At this point in time and in the context of playing in the Scotland midfield.   The club he plays for is irrelevant as far as that is concerned.

What’s your point? The question was whether McTominay is a better player than McGregor or not. If someone wants to bring up clubs that’s up to them.

Do you genuinely think Callum McGregor could hold down a starting place at Manchester United?

Yes I agree. Form swings and good performances for Scotland makes the decision making a lot of the time. At present McGregor has earned his place in midfield against Israel as he has performed well and is forming a promising partnership with Gilmour. McTominay, on the other hand, has missed the last three games so I cannot see him coming into midfield for us as Clarke prefers him in defence anyway and with Hanley out it is a slot waiting to be filled by McTominay.

That's a sweeping statement. Just prior to the Euros Clarke said he planned to use him in midfield from now on then changed his mind for some reason. With the emergence of a specialist CB in Hendry it is more likely after the Israel game that he will go into midfield - if he gets into the side at all!

We need to stop playing McTominay out of position, unless it’s an absolute emergency, there’s no need for it. It’s time we started playing him in his natural role, as a box to box midfielder. I’m sure given the opportunity, he will shine.

Yeah it will certainly be interesting to see where McTominay fits in when he’s back in the squad especially when Hanly is back.

I agree that he won’t be played in defence again when the first choice back 3 are available unless somebody suffers a major dip in form.

Agreed. He did a job for us there when we were struggling but the emergence of Hendry and resurgence of Hanley means we shouldn’t need to play him there unless we have injury/Covid issues in that area.

I just hope Clarke doesn’t play him here just to shoehorn him into the team if he plans to continue with Gilmour and McGregor.

It gives Clarke options at the very least. It also increases competition for places within the midfield. For example if Clarke goes with a back 4 of

Patterson Hendry Hanley Robbo

he can push Tierney ahead of Robbo, have McTominay on the the right and still have Gilmour and McGregor in the middle

McTominay Gilmour McGregor Tierney

that would leave McGinn playing behind Dykes

Not a bad looking team, in my opinion.
