Okay, it's not the beach but Scotland is not immune from this sort of violence. Machetes seem to be the weapon of choice nowadays for a lot of these thugs whatever their background.

That sounds for all the world more like a gang thing rather than just daft neds (and the article doesn't make reference to the ethnicity of the attackers or their victim).

The machete video from Southend could have been gang-related too; possibly related to the 'county lines' stuff that is an increasing and fairly new problem across the UK, including, sadly, parts of Scotland.

Over the past 20 years, Glasgow’s knife crime numbers have significantly reduced. At the same time, Glasgow’s ethnic diversity has increased. Back when Glasgow’s knife crime stats were really high, it was mostly white folk that were doing the stabbing.

Don’t let these facts undermine your racist attitudes.

That's a wee bit harsh.

It could be that knife crime and the factors leading to it are just policed better in Glasgow than in some other cities, rather than the proportion of white people declining relative to the rest of the population.

That's up there with the hanging of the monkey in a Hartlepool.

Talking of Hartlepool, if you've got a pet monkey keep it locked up. It looks like the idiots were back on the streets again.

I know from experience though that the South East of England in and around London is very densely populated indeed. I like London as a place, it's a stunning city, but I couldn't thole living there, there are just too many people!

Reminds me of teaching an S2 Social Subjects class earlier this year. Can't remember what it was on but I mentioned in passing that the population of London was greater than Scotland. One poor lass just couldn't get her head round that, I thought her head was going to explode.

What's insane is that's just the city. The greater metropolitan population of London is like 14m or more depending on what boundaries you use. That's nearly three times our population.

England in general is seriously overpopulated when you consider it's area size.

The place would be better dropping in population. Perhaps right wing ppl should push that narrative as a reason for less immigrants.

I think Glasgow has gone through some positive Regeneration and the worst slums have been demolished.

If you Google areas of Glasgow the pictures it pulls up is pretty shocking. Some of these areas looked like eastern European ghettos. Glaswegians will tell you that huge parts of the city was like that and it doesn't surprise me that these estates were high in knive crime etc.

There was a study done by a Liverpool university a few years ago and it was researching the most deprived areas of the UK from 1971 to 2011.

I can't remember the exact stats but something like 40 or 50 of the poorest 100 areas were in greater Glasgow and 50 or 60 were in Scotland in general.

When you consider greater Glasgow is like only 2m then that's pretty shocking.

I think there's been a few reasons for the reduction in knive crime in Scotland but I think the regeneration of areas and gang reduction units have helped alot.

I first learned of that fact via a Rab C Nesbitt episode 😂 (I would have been a similar age as the lassie in your class actually). I assumed it was a joke - surprised me too when I found out it was true!

You are right on both counts.

That post was a wee bit harsh - it was directed at a poster on here who predicts that immigration will cause the West's implosion.

And Glasgow’s falling knife crime statistics are largely attributed to the authorities treating it as a public health issue and not just a crime issue. There’s been a planned collaborative effort between the police, education, the NHS, and social work.

100% agree, although I believe Leith is now the most populated part of Scotland

Probably full of Londoners moving out.

Have never liked London. Too big , too busy, too impersonal.

partly why I love London - big, busy and impersonal.  I am there every couple of weeks, thankfully in a hotel and not having to commute or buy house.  A nice house in London in a good area and you are looking £10m and up.

Let’s revisit this in 10 years, no actually 5years and let’s see how the free for all immigration is coming along,,, I hope you are right however I am pretty sure I will be again!!!

completely agree with you.  I can only see this getting worse.  A concern is the nonsense going around calling people racist and far right for simply opposing immigration and a dilution of British culture.

I have no time for religion in general, but I particularly despise radical islam. I absolutely do not want the laws of this land to be diluted to accommodate that. Multiculturalism is a difficult thing to manage.

Happy to revisit this in five or ten years time, but there's really no need to. You can look at the facts now: over the last 20 years, immigration into Glasgow has gone up and violent crime has gone down.

Also, immigration is not a “free for all”. Have you tried to reenter this country without a passport? Or get a job without proof of a right-to-work?

Humans have emigrated for as long as there’s been humans (and countries). Grifters have tried to whip up fear of immigrants for as long as there have been immigrants. “Opposing” immigration is as futile as opposing any other natural human trait.

And what laws are currently set to be diluted to accommodate radical islam?

Wait. You regularly leave Scotland for work in London? Do that not make you an economic migrant?

Man boxes woman in the Olympics and unsurprisingly knocks fuck out of her.  What a joke.

Maybe, or maybe not. Apparently the Algerian athlete wasn't allowed to compete in events last year due to raised levels of testosterone. These events were organised by the IBA, who due to lack of transparency round finances etc, are not running the boxing at the Olympics. The boxing is being run by the IOC, I don't know the difference in eligibility criteria between the two organisations.

The Algerian has boxed in the Olympics before and I don't know if there was a fuss previously. I think what there does need to be is far greater clarity and transparency from organisations like both the IOC and IBA about the criteria they use.

I noticed that phart has commented on this in 'Other Sports', 'Paris 2024', so maybe better to carry on the conversation there rather than spread it over two separate threads

not if the United Kingdom is one country.  Opposing immigration is not futile if you can close the borders.
