Friendlies before euro 2020

Before lockdown last year, there was a lot of talk about a game v Northern Ireland in Belfast and a training camp in mainland Europe.

Imagine depending on how far talks with NI got, that one may resurface.

I would be shocked if we continue with plans for a training camp in Europe, and probably look for a home game of some kind or game in England.

Northern Ireland have just announced away friendlies for June against Ukraine and Turkey

Why are we always so late in announcing our friendly matches...

While there is a sizable amount of friendlies for June, its all the same teams playing each other (ie the Baltic nations seem to be going up against each other over a two week window) and as for the Euro 2020 teams, only England, Ukraine, Portugal have all their games tied down, and then a hand full of teams like Wales, Romania, Finland, Poland and Austria with only one game announced so far.

Teams like Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, France etc have yet to announce a single game... plus the Republic of Ireland have nothing announced.

While time is getting on, we are not exactly the worst at the moment for announcing games (I imagine a number of teams are waiting for UEFA to make their announcement in April on the Euro's, which is probably holding others up announcing games).

Sweden, Poland and Slovakia all have 2 games in Dublin so might fancy a game at Hampden?

We should be looking to arrange home games.

UEFA take control of Hampden day after Scottish Cup final, so off limits for games.

I suspect the reason a there is not a awful lot of games announced so far is because teams who have qualified for the Euros are wary to travel, so struggling to get teams who will travel.

Been some talk that Scotland are struggling for a Euro 2020 base camp.... Croatia have St Andrews booked, and apparently Czech's have Oriam (but talk they only had the original Euros date booked, and have not taken up option to switch to this year)... with reports that Steve is looking to use Newcastle United training ground for the Euros.

So any home friendlies will probably be in Edinburgh.

Why the hell are we playing away friendlies when two of our euros games are at home! Get the boys in the zone at Hampden

UEFA take control of Hampden day after Scottish Cup final, so all games after that are off limits (every other nation that is holding Euro games in same boat)

While rare, Ireland have played friendlies in Cork in recent years (they played Belarus just before Euro 2016 and sure they played a game there before Euro 2012 against a African nation).

They also played games in Limerick when the Aviva was getting rebuilt in the 00’s.

There was talk of Murray Park, but seems like Clarke wants away from the spotlight and has decided upon Newcastle.
