One case in point was when Craig Brown was in charge. Kenny Miller (at 19) had broken into the Hibs team and was getting rave reviews. At that time Scotland was not blessed with an array of great striking options and Brown persevered with tried, tested and failed players. Miller was capped once by Brown and it was Vogts that let him off the leash and by that time had around 50 goals at decent strike rate to his credit and was 24.

To be fair, at that point he was probably competing against Don Hutchison and Billy Dodds. Even at his peak Kenny Miller was never as good as either of them.

Well Miller had a better strike rate for Scotland than Dodds and probably had a weaker team to supply him with passes/crosses etc. The same can be said for Don Hutchison. Besides, as I recall it he wasn't even making it into squads (Kenny Miller) whilst others such as Steve Crawford (again worse strike rate) and other lesser options were in the squad.

Thats the point. Im not suggesting bringing in the odd youngster to replace 1st team players or even their direct replacement. There is space however to fill out the squad with a couple of younger players each time.

Wales don't seem to have a problem with it.

They have a young lad on the books at Manchester United called Dylan Levitt (20 years old). Hasn't played a first team game for them. He's a part of the u23s.

He was on loan at Charlton Athletic. He played 4 matches for them... The same amount of cap he has for Wales.

There are many examples like that with Wales.

Ben Woodburn (Liverpool) was a teenager who had only played a handful of games sporadically for Liverpool but was dropped into the Wales team and scored a crucial goal in one of his first games in a World Cup Qualifier that proved to be a winning goal.

Aaron Ramsey (Cardiff) was another teenager who had a dozen or so first team games and was bedded into the national team to great effect.

Neco Williams (Liverpool) with less than a dozen games sporadically dropped into the national team as a teenager.

And there are many more such examples.

Yep.

Argentina capped Mascherano before he even played one game in professional football.

90 minutes for the under 21s means nothing when you’re a top player.

Also if he was in the senior squad he would be well worth a start regardless of his game time for Chelsea.

Top players, if fully fit, tend not to sit kicking their heels on the bench for mid-table sides, two games in succession.

He definitely has the potential to be a top player, and hopefully he'll fulfill that sooner rather than later, but if he was there now he'd be getting a regular game for Chelsea.

To me, it makes no sense having him in the senior squad unless you were going to play him, which begs the question, who would you drop to accommodate him?  Armstrong or McGinn, who are playing regularly for teams in a similar league position as Chelsea? Scott McTominay, who's playing regularly for the current league leaders?

Kenny Miller was a far better player than Dodds. Holy shit.

Of course he was. Kenny Miller is our sixth highest goalscorer of all time, with just one goal less than Ally McCoist, and from a similar number of caps. He generally played in poorer Scotland sides too, often by upfront by himself, which makes his record even more impressive. He was a good player for Scotland, and we still haven't adequately replaced him.

Still not convinced Gilmour should stay at Chelsea. I keep seeing posts about how much lampard thinks about him but has a team that have no consistency and are not playing well together and he still doesn't give Gilmour a run of games. He needs gametime to get anywhere near our squad and I think he has to go on loan or leave.

I am starting to come around to your way of thinking I must admit.
